So take your Bible now and turn to the book 1 John and chapter 5. There’s a lot of different doctrines, the Zababa calls it winds of doctrine, false teaching that goes around. And some people believe that once you trust Christ as Savior, that sin doesn’t matter. You can just do whatever you want to do and there’s no consequences to it because all the sins paid for, therefore you’re free. You can just commit whatever you want. And I sit down, I don’t know, for a couple hours, at different times talking to this individual, trying to get him to understand that that is not true.

And he couldn’t believe it. He just still won’t believe it. And he’s up in age and he just can’t understand. He says, sin is not an issue anymore. I says not as far as a penalty percent going to hell because Christ paid for that. I said, but that doesn’t mean that you can go out here and just live the way you want and get away with it. Not one effect your eternal destination, but it sure will affect your quality of life here and when you get to heaven because God is going to either reward you or not reward you based upon what you’ve done.

So it does affect eternity, doesn’t affect your eternal salvation. Once you trust the Christ to save you, you’re his child. Forever, you’re saved by grace. You can’t lose that. Well, look here in verse 13, the first John chapter 5, verse 13, these things have are written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life and that you may believe on the name of the Son of God. Now, believe is very simple.

It means you just take God in his words. God says something, you believe it, that’s faith, that’s taking him as words. Whether you want to talk about accepting or believing or whatever, as long as the words mean the same. And because that’s all you have to do. But many preachers today, they say, for God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that who sovar, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, parry, but have everlasting life.

He says, well, what did he say? Well, he says, in, you know, the book of John 647, and I’ve barely, barely asked him, you’ll heed that, bla bla bla bla bla, had their everlasting life. But you’ve got to make that, whatever that word is, it’s got to be clear. It’s not clear because you understand it. It’s clear when the lost men understand what you have said. And so when he says here in verse 13, these things have I written unto you that bla bla bla bla bla, on the name of the Son of God, you know that that word here is believe.

And that’s all you have to do is believe, but they want to make it so jumbled because they can’t believe that God made it so simple. But that’s exactly what he did. So once you have trusted Christ of Savior and you know that you have eternal life, should a Christian be concerned about the sins in the life? I’ve had people say that once you trust Christ of Savior. And if you do go astray, that God will bring you back before you die.

So yeah, you can backslide, but before you die, God will bring you back to him. I heard that for years, but it’s not true. God will bring you back all the way. Not just back to you here. He’s going to take you all the way on home maybe. Because you cannot live as you place and get away with it. There are consequences. And there is a God in heaven. And as we read the scripture this morning and it talks about for this cause many are sick, many are weak and many are what?

Dead, dead. And if they are dead because of their disobedience, that means they didn’t get back right with God before God had to take him home. So there’s people that do die. Now look what he says here in verse 16. Verse 16, it’s got some strange language. We’re not going to spend a lot of time on this. I just want to give you a couple ideas. There is a possibility that you can see people that will sin a sin on the death.

The Bible talked about a sin on the death in the words a sin that you can commit and bring physical death we’re not talking about spiritual death, but physical death and Because God’s word tells us that we can have our lives shortened because of our disobedience to the Lord and That this is mentioned there in the book of 2nd Corinthians in chapter 5 and verse 1 the verse 3 about the person who had committed fornication even with his mother.

So I’m going to leave maybe he called a mother-in-law. But whatever it was a sin he says it’s commonly reported among you and so therefore this is a great sin and he says that you prayed that this person would be taken from you and talking about physical death. Well look what he says here in verse 16 if a man see his brother a Christian. Sin is sin which is not in the death, he can ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not in the death.

There is a sin on the death. I do not say that he shall pray for it. All unrighteousness is sin, and there is a sin not in the death. But there is a sin that is on the death. So there is a sin that Christians can commit where God says that is enough, and God will not tolerate him. Now in the Old Testament under the law. It was very clearly stated that there were certain sins that if you committed them, you were to be taken and stoned to death.

That’s sure death. And they were to put out all the people that were sodomites out of the land. They were to literally be killed. Now, we don’t do that today, but that was under the law they did. That was a sin that produced physical death. And there were other ones like even sometimes in cases of adultery, they were to be stoned to death. So there were some pretty bad deals back then, and I think we’re ought to be mighty glad that we’re not living then.

If America was under that kind of a law now, we would probably have to kill probably seven eights of America because of the wickedness. The Bible tells us that even though there are people who sinned unto death, we are supposed to try to encourage individual Christians to do right. And therefore, if you don’t have the gall, if you want to say, the courage that it takes, in tests and afforditude to talk to people, Christians that have air in their ways, you might be saving a soul from death, as it says in James in the fifth chapter.

It will save a soul from death because you help get him corrected. But today we live in a society where everybody just does that which is right in their own eyes. And the thing is, is they’re and then we commit the same kind of a sin of intolerant or tolerance by tolerating the wickedness in our land. We are afraid to say anything about what people do, even when it comes to Christians. And there’s Christians that shack up with one another and they don’t get married.

Is that right or wrong? I know Christians that even went to Florida Bible College and was out there in Colorado and they was helping to put together the convention that we had and then I found out that they were homosexuals and I liked to die. And we had one that came and I hired them to be a teacher in our Christian school and found out that one of them was a a sodomite already graduated from Bible college, even in the ministry working your pain on your salary on the payroll.

And when I find out about it, they’re out immediately. Now you can forgive them, but they got to start all over again from scratch to earn a testimony before you just say it doesn’t matter anymore. It does matter. And so there are sins that people commit that the Bible says was worthy of death. And whether we do anything as a government about it or not is not so much as the issue, it should be because that is the role of government to take care of the crimes in society.

Remember, crimes are sins. Thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not commit adultery, thou shalt not steal and so forth and do these things that they’re not supposed to do, but all crimes are all sins. So whenever we tolerate crimes in our society, we’re tolerating sins in our society. So take your Bible now and turn to the book of 1 Samuel in chapter 10, 1 Samuel and chapter 10, just so that you know God does deal even today, though you may not see it because God is behind the scenes, but God does work in the lives of his children.

If God is going to bless me now, then I believe God is going to chasten his children now. So there’s blessings and there’s chastening. Rewards are when we get to heaven and there’s going to be Christians are going to be suffering the consequences in heaven when they’re not rewarded for the things that they could have done for the Lord. So first Samuel in chapter 10, this is now the anointing of the first king of Israel. What was his name?

His name was Saul, hidden shoulders above everybody. This is not what God wanted, but they wanted a king so they could be like all the other nations. So God told Samuel, I picked out a man, you going on on him. So in verse one it says, then Samuel took a vial of oil and poured it upon his head, talking about Saul. See the last part of the previous chapter verse 27, and as they were going down to the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, bit the servants pass on before us and he passed on, but stand out here of while that I may show thee the Word of God.

I want your servants to go ahead, but I want you to stay right here. I want to show you something from the Word of God. I believe that Saul knew the Lord and that he was a believer in the Lord. And God had chosen him above all the men in all of Israel to be the first king. At one point, God told him, says, when bowless little and thine own eyes. He said, I raised you up, but now you didn’t got big in your own eyes.

It’s amazing how that when you’re young, you can become more sensitive to some of the things of the Lord, but when you get older, you become complacent. We become filled with apathy and we start drifting even with Solomon. In his younger days, when he He first became king, he was given a choice about what he wanted, and he said, I want wisdom to rule thy people. And so because he was young, he asked for the right thing. His heart was tender and God blessed him with great riches and great wisdom and the wisest man that ever lived.

But after a while, he drifted from the Lord. And instead of having one wife, he had a thousand of them, 700 wives and 300 concubines. The Bible says that God dealt with them and rent or tore the kingdom apart because of it. The two tribes from the 10 tribes. But now notice what he says here in the last part of verse 1. Is it not because the Lord hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance? When thou art departed from me today, when thou shalt find two men by Rachel Separica and the border of Benjamin?

So he says, I want you to go there, and this is what I want you to do. He says they’re in verse four, and they will salute thee and give thee two loaves of bread, which thou shalt receive of their hands. There’s somebody who’s going to meet you on the road. Now in verse five, after that thou shalt come to the heel of God. Where is the garrison of the Philistines? And it shall come to pass when thou art come dither to the city, that thou shalt meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place where they saw to re-enitabric, and a pipe, and a harp before them.

And they shall prophesy. verse six, and the spirit of the Lord will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and thou shalt be turned into another man.” We would call that being led to the Lord or having a new birth, but he says here, and let it be, when these signs are come upon thee that thou do as occasion served thee, for God is with thee, and thou shalt go down before me to Gilgal and be whole I will come down unto thee to offer burnt offerings, to sacrifice sacrifices of peace operands.

Seven days shall thou teary, till I come to thee, and show thee what thou shalt do. And it was so that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart. And all those signs came to pass that day. And then there in verse 11, and it came to pass when all that knew him before time saw that, behold he prophesied among the prophets when the people said one to another, what is this? That this is the son of Kish, is Saul also among the prophets.

So God did a wonderful thing in a young man’s life. totally turned him around. He had no idea that God had all these wonderful things in store for him. So God raised him up and wanted him king and gave him the Holy Spirit and allowed him to prophesy. He had a sandaletist side that would speak to God and intercede for him and so he had it all set up for him. He didn’t have to do anything to get it.

And even at the very beginning he honored the Lord and he served the Lord. But it wasn’t long before things began to change. And when those things changed, just remember this, out of this little portion of the scripture we just read, 1 in verse 1, the Lord chose Saul. In verse 6, the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and also in verse 6, he would prophesy. He would be turned into another man in verse 6, God would be with him in verse 7, and God gave him another heart in verse 9.

So we believe that there’s no doubt Saul was a believer in the Lord. He was not a heretic, he was not a heathen, he was a believer. Now first Samuel chapter 15, first Samuel chapter 15 just turned to your right. And notice a few things. God had told Samuel some things to do. Samuel began to get the big head and did a lot of things that he should not have done. And one of the things that God told me to do is I said I want you to kill the Amalekites.

Amalekite is the type of the flesh. They were people that had persecuted the children of Israel when they came up out of the land of Egypt. And God says that these are people that are a thorn in the side of the nation of Israel. And He says that I want you to kill them and kill them all. So God remembered what a gag had done, and this is a gag here. And he was to be killed. And God told them, says, I want you to kill them all, but he didn’t do it.

He didn’t do what he was supposed to do. Now look there in verse 19. This is in 1st Samuel chapter 15. Says, Wherefore then, this thou not obey the voice of the Lord. Samuel is talking to Saul. But this fly upon the spoil and this evil in the sight of the Lord. God says you did evil. What did he do? He obeyed in a lot of areas, but he didn’t obey in all areas. And remember, there’s people that say, well, either Christ is Lord of all or not Lord at all.

There is a point where you are supposed to yield yourself in every area of your life to the Lord. salvation it’s not Lord of all. It’s that you trust Christ as your Savior. Now after you are saved I believe that Christ should be the Lord of every area of your life. Means you should be willing to obey the Lord in all things. But it says here he says in verse 20. And Saul said unto Samuel, yea I have obeyed the voice of the Lord and have gone the way which the Lord sent me and have brought agai the king of Malachite, he said of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Malachites.

But he didn’t. He saved one man alive. He had confiscated the sheep and so forth that he was going to offer sacrifice. He said the people made me do it. And he had talked to Eve. He had made excuses on why things were not right. He determined what he would do and wouldn’t do. You see, the steps away from serving God is not all at one time. It’s a process. It’s where you go through a systematic step and away from the direction that God wants you to go in.

And so now it was partial obedience. At the beginning it was total obedience. Now it’s partial obedience. And he made the statement down here in verse 21, but the people took of the spoil, chief in the oxen, the chief of everything. And Samuel made this statement there in verse 22, hath the Lord is great delight in burn offerings and sacrifices as an obey in the voice of the Lord? Behold to obey is better than sacrifice and to harken than the fad of rams.

For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft. Witchcraft was a sin that God says was to be with execution. They were to stone and put out of their land those who were those who were familiar spirits. Those who had seances and the diviners and so forth, those that were guilty of enchantments and so on. God said, he did not want that. He said, I’ve given you my word. My word is what you’re supposed to go by. Not trying to line up some planets and not by trying to conjure up the dead and trying to find up some secret stuff.

God says, no. He says, because I have rejected the word of the Lord, he hath also rejected them from being king. You’re not going to be king no more. And in verse 24, he saw, says, I have sinned, I’ve transgressed the commandment of the Lord, and thy word, because I feared the people and obeyed their voices. Now therefore I pray, pardon my sin, turn again with me, and that I may worship the Lord. He said, I will not return with thee, for thou hast rejected the word of the Lord.

In other words, did he confess his sin? Yes, he did. He said, I’m sorry, I should have done I was wrong. That did not restore the crown to him. See, the biggest thing that we have today, there’s people think that all you have to do is just confess your sin and you’re right with God. No, you’re not. Don’t think that just because here you are as a child of God and you commit a sin, you have broke fellowship with God.

Our walk with God is not based upon our total 100% obedience because if it did, nobody could have fellowship with God. We have fellowship with God because the blood of Jesus Christ continually keeps us clean. Now your fellowship with God might be that you’re not as close to the Lord as you should be, but you can still have some fellowship with God. Me and my wife can have fellowship with each other, but there may be times when it’s not as close as it ought to be.

And just because I do something wrong it didn’t break our fellowship like now we don’t have none at all. No you just don’t have some fellowship, but it’s not as strong as it ought to be. It’s not as joyful as it ought to be. It’s not as full as it ought to be. First John talks about that your joy may be full. So I don’t believe that as you walk with the Lord and you do certain things and you’ve got a little sin in your life, that all of your fellowship when God is broken, I believe it’s strained, I believe it’s weakened, I believe the joy is diminished, but God said he wants us to have a full joy.

And so therefore we confess our sins and God is faithful and just to forgive us for what we’ve done and the forgiving us of what we’ve done means that we can continue to walk with the Lord. And if you don’t restore your walk, you don’t restore fellowship because fellowship is you and God in agreement. And if you don’t restore the walk, you don’t restore a fellowship or the walk with God. So this is what What is happening now with Saul?

He had rebelled against the Lord. He asked the Lord to forgive him to pardon, but too late. And I don’t know if he asked God as much as he asked Samuel, because Samuel was a very, very powerful man. Things were getting bad for him. He was on a downhill slide. Now look in chapter 18. Chapter 18. And notice there in verse 29, 18. in verse 29. This is just to start to in verse 28, Saul saw and knew that the Lord was with David and that Michael’s Saul’s daughter loved him.

So Saul hated David. Why? Well because David was going to be the next king. But there’s a lot of things that David didn’t totally understand and know at the time. But he knew that there’s something different about David, God that was with him. David was young again. And also, Saul had a daughter. And his daughter loved David. And of course, later on, David is hated by Saul. And what does Saul want to do with David? He wants to kill him.

And so he begins to throw things at him, try to kill him. even had his men not hunting for him and so forth. So we got pretty bad. But look what he says in verse 29. Saul was a believer. Saul was yet the more afraid of David and Saul became David’s enemy continually. Now there’s those who say that in the book of 1 John when he says that whosoever is born of God to not commit sin. That word commit they say is the word, Greek word praso, which means to habitually practice.

So you can get even in your scofareference Bible and look in the margin and you’ll say practice sin. In the NIV you will talk about you won’t practice sin. Well, the problem is that every Christian practices sin, or they’re just plumb experts at it. Because then you get into how many sins did it take to practice sin? Well, see, the Greek word there is not praso. Praso means to habitually commit sin, to continue sinning. But the word is poeo in the Greek, and poeo means one single act of sin.

So he says, whosoever is born of God to not commit sin cannot commit one single act of sin because his seed remaining and he cannot sin. Not that he cannot practice sin. That’s contradicts the part that you said you will practice sin. And so that’s why I despise I do not like the NIV. The NIV is not a good translation Monstrous of the people who look upon it as superior to the girl King James. But the King James, I believe, is correct.

It simply says what it says. Then you can explain things to people. But when you put it into a translation and say, this is what it says, and it doesn’t say that. I believe people answer to God for saying, the Bible says and the Bible doesn’t say that. So does a Christian practice sin? Well, it says that first John, when they use that that word incorrectly, they’re saying, if you’re really saved, you won’t go out here and practice and you won’t continue on and sin.

So then everybody becomes fruit inspectors. Then look at people’s lives and if you got sin in your life, you must not really be saved because if you was really saved, you wouldn’t do that. And if that’s the case, then everybody is lost because if you fall around everybody long enough, you’ll find out that everybody got sin in their life and generally we’re guilty of committing the same sins over and over and note again. When you get mad about certain things being said, you in a certain way, you’ll probably do that again the next time, the next time, the next time, the next time, and the next time.

But that’s not what it says. And God does not tolerate these things. But look what he says. David was Saul’s enemy. Saul became David’s enemy, continued. That word continually means that Saul a believer was continually habitually committing sin and still a believer. And he was doing it against David. But when we talk about in the book of 1 John, whosoever is born of God does not commit sin. That’s the new birth. The new birth born of God does not sin.

But in your flesh, you will habitually commit sin. It would be great if you would stop all of it, and I would stop all of it, but we’re born with a sinful nature and we sin. But this is what was happening. Saul was getting worse and worse. He didn’t get better and better. He was right with the Lord, and then he started getting away from the Lord and the older, he got the worse he got. And it’s the worst thing of all, just because you and I have known the Lord for a long time.

Does it mean that you can coast from here on in? You warned before and you had to discipline and you fought battles. You fought a lot of battles over the temptations of the flesh and the pride of life and the lust of the eyes and so forth and you’re going to have to fight them until the day you die. This old flesh will not stop and don’t let down just because you’re getting older and think it doesn’t matter anymore.

It It still matters. We’re not dead yet. We’re not home yet. You’ve been listening to Bibleline, a teaching ministry of Calvary Community Church in Tampa, Florida, with Dr. Ralph Arnold.
