So a Christian cannot live as he pleases and get away with it, there’s a great price to pay. Look what he says there in verse 30. For we know him that hath said, vengeance belongeth unto me. I will recompense saith the Lord, and again, and underst blindest, the Lord shall judge and yodah underline these two words, especially his people. So we’re not talking about the lost people. We’re talking about God’s people. Now, he makes the statement here. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God, and then he says, but called to remembrance because these people evidently had trust the Christ of Savior and had even known the will of God and had made some wise decisions.
They decide to serve the Lord. You see what he says there in verse 32, but call to remember the former days in which after you were illuminated, you endured a great fight of afflictions. In other words, you saw the light, you took a stand, you paid a price, you started well, you started to run. And in verse 33, partly why you were made a gazing stock. So we know we’re talking to believers here. You were made a gazing stock both by reproaches and afflictions, and partly while ye became companions of them that were so used.
For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and get this took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that you have in heaven.” Now you think he’s talking to The lost people having something in heaven? Or you think he’s talking about believers having something in heaven? See, it’s not the lost people that we’re talking about here. This is talking about believers that know the truth. Rebel against God. And yet at one time you did what you knew God wanted you to do.
But something happens. See, the devil always wanted you tired and weary and warned of where you just, I’ve had enough. quit, I can’t go on and whatever. And so he says in verse 34, for ye had compassion of me and my bonds. Took joyful and swollen of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and enduring substance. Whatever you were willing to give here upon the earth, he says, because of what I was going through, you helped me.
Because you knew that whatever you gave, you were going to get something better back in heaven. Rewards are earned. Salvation is free. So we’re talking about what the believers can have in heaven. A better and enduring substance because of the afflictions they were willing to go through down here. And what they endured, you see, you don’t always enjoy everything that goes on. But God gives us the strength and the grace that we need to endure what we have to endure.
Knowing and believing that something better. Now look in verse 35. And verse 35, He makes a statement, cast not away. Cast not away. This is the same as He’s talking about back there in chapter too. Don’t let something slip from you. Don’t let it slip away. How shall we escape the chasteening hand of God if we let what we know slip through our fingers? The opportunities that God’s given to us, we only get to live one time in life, one trip through, no reruns, no replays, just one trip through.
through, cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompense of reward. So we’re talking to believers and we’re talking about rewards. So it’s something that you’re going to lose if you let something slip out of your hand. So he’s saying, hold fast. And I believe here when he makes a statement in verse 35, cast not a way, therefore, your what? Confidence. What builds your confidence? What makes you bold in the Lord? When you know what the word of God says and you believe it and you have faith that God will take care and provide and protect and all that, and it’s worth it because you’re going to have something in heaven that’s going to be worth it all.
We’re just sung the song. It will be worth it all. So that’s why he says, Don’t cast away therefore your coffin, which has great recompense of reward. But what about those that do? You see there in verse 36, for you have need of patience that get this after you have done the will of God. So we are talking about believers that know they’re going to heaven. We’re talking about believers that know the will of God. to rebel against that which you have received, to know the truth, to have light given to you, and then for you to just rebel against it.
What’s going to be the result? God says He is going to chase in us. But before the chasing, God always makes a plea and gives us a chance. He talks about, I want you to live by faith. Live with your confidence in me. So a verse that’s used three times in the New Testament, once in the Old Testament, the book of Habakkah, chapter 2 and verse 4, about the just shall live by faith. The just shall live by faith.
And Hebrews talks about the just shall live by faith and explains what he means by faith. So you’d notice there in verse 38, now the just shall live by faith. But if any man draw my soul shall have no pleasure in him. But we are not of them that draw back unto perdition, but of them that believe to the saving of the soul. Even if a man does not live by faith, he still saved. But God doesn’t have pleasure in that individual.
Isn’t one of the things that we should do and want to do is to please the Lord? But God said I have no pleasure in them. And the reason that word is so important is because you see there in verse 5 of chapter 11, look in chapter 11 in verse 5. He said, by faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death. Was not found because God had translated him, for before his translation he had this testimony. So we’re talking about the testimony of God’s children.
What kind of a testimony do you have? But He had this kind of a testimony, look at the last part of that. He did what? He pleased God. You see, one of the greatest goals of every one of God’s children is that I want to live in such a way that it pleases God. And God says, don’t let this slip away, this desire, this confidence of living by faith, of just looking to the Lord and trusting the Lord. don’t let these opportunities just pass you by.
And so as you go through here, you’ll find out that Chapter 11 is a whole chapter on what it means to live by faith. He’s not talking about how they were saved, He was talking about how they lived. Talk about their testimony, about Abraham, all the way through. All these people, what they did, God said and they obeyed. God said they obeyed. So having, therefore, such a great cloud of witnesses like these Old Testament Saints in chapter 11, he should let us, see they’re in chapter 12.
In chapter 12… Look at the last part of verse one where he says, let us run with patience, the race that is set before us. This let us and let us and let us and let us, oh, I sure mentioned a lot of times, is talking to God’s children about obeying the Lord. Things will help you to stay strong. Now look again in chapter 10, chapter 10, and notice they’re in this verse 22. as a child of God, realizing that the payment for all the sins have been paid for.
And yes, you now are free to serve the Lord. You can serve the Lord now. You see, before you couldn’t do it, now you’re free. You can. But you may rebel against it. So he says in verse 22, let us and your other underline this, draw near. Let us draw near. You see, it’s the will of God for you to get as close to the Lord as you can get. Are you closer to the Lord now than you used to be?
Or are you drifting away from the Lord? Is the Lord more precious to you than he used to be? Do you want to please the Lord more than you ever did in your life? Nobody can answer those questions except you, but look what he says, let us draw near it with a true heart and full assurance confidence of faith. See, talking about, as he says here, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience. What would be an evil conscience?
A conscience that you’re talking about cast away therefore you’re confident, a confidence of deserting God, a confidence of not pleasing God, a confidence of being rebellious to God. So many of God’s people are just like that. But you You don’t want to be like that. So he said, let us draw near. In verse 23, he says, let us hold fast. Verse 24, let us consider. See, when you have lettuce, lettuce, lettuce, that’s a lot of lettuce in a lot of gardens.
And everybody ought to have a garden with nothing but lettuce in it. I thought that was pretty good anyway. But look in verse 23, let us hold fast the profession of our faith. Well, they’re waving. Why? Because he is faithful that what? Promised. You see, it all boils down to do you believe that what God said he meant? That God’s promises are true and to be faithful because of the promise of God. See, I haven’t yet gotten my new body.
I haven’t stood yet at the Judgement of the Christ and got any rewards. But I know this he promised He promised Now can I keep serving the Lord? Because I know he promised and those promises and believing that that confidence is can drive you through Look what he says in chapter 11 just so you can see this look in verse 39 and These all having obtained a good report through faith received not the promise Not in their lifetime they did but they did what they did in their lifetime Believing that in the age to come It will be worth it all So you and I are supposed to believe that Hold your place in chapter 10 and look over there in the book of Hebrews in chapter 4 Look in Hebrews chapter 4 And look what he says in verse 14 seeing then that we, here’s that we again, we believers have a great high priest that is passed into heaven.
Jesus the Son of God and here’s that same phrase that we just read over there in chapter 10. Let us hold fast our profession. In other words, this confession of truth, this is the body of truth that God’s given, I believe it. Whole fast to sound doctrine, as the Bible says in Titus. Whole fast. Know what you believe and know why you believe it. And don’t let the devil cause you not to have confidence in the provision of God or in the protection of God.
Now, just for an example, You take in the Old Testament, remember that Sarah told Abraham, well why don’t you take this Egyptian girl and have a baby by her? And maybe this is how God is going to keep his word. But what was his word? Well, you’re going to have a son. Maybe he means you’re going to have it through this woman. So she has a baby. Then they became despised in each other’s eyes. And the day came when Sarah came to Abraham and said, she just spices me.
I want that woman out of here. You know, these women always get jealous like this. I want that woman out of here. And she can take her kid with her. So Abrahamian, yeah, okay, so they left. Took some water. It wasn’t long before all the water was gone. All the water was gone. So she had her son laying there and she went a little further and she cried, the baby cried. And she just didn’t know what she was going to do.
And then all of a sudden, the Bible says, the Lord says, I have heard the cry of the child. Did they heard the cry of the woman? I heard the cry of the child. There’s a message in here somewhere. I’m going to preach it one of these days, but down the road. He told her, says, look, I’m going to make a great nation out of that kid. Boy, has he ever. That close, and we wouldn’t have had all this trouble with all these Arabs.
But it didn’t work out that way, and here they are. There was a well there, but she didn’t see the well. But it was a provision that God had already provided, but she didn’t know it was there. Did you know that whenever Abraham was going to slay his son, behind him was a ram caught in the thicket? He couldn’t get free. Abraham was looking the other direction. God had already provided an unseen sacrifice and an unseen provision. Sometimes God has to help us see something that’s right in front of us.
Did you know that sometimes in the will of God, he’s already got the answer and you just can’t see it? It’s right there, but you can’t see it. And then all of a sudden, it’s like, there it is, there it is. And you wonder sometimes, how did that happen? He does this all the time, whenever I want to find something, I go to the closet, it’s not there. Betty walks in there, and there it is. It’s all the time.
God helps her to see things I can’t see. That’s why you’ve got to have two people. So notice what he says here. In verse 14, are we talking to believers? Yes. Are we talking about believers serving the Lord? Yes. And he talks about here in verse 16, let us, let us, more let us. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace that we might get saved and got not go to hell. No, that’s not what he’s talking about.
This is to the believer, live in your life, getting the grace, the help that you need in time of need. So God has a throne for us and he says, this confidence, don’t let anything cause you to question or to doubt the promises of God. Because you see, believing the promises of God is what gives you this confidence and the confidence is why you do the work and the work is why you get the rewards. And if you don’t get the rewards, it’s because you didn’t do the work.
You didn’t do the work because you didn’t have the confidence. You don’t do the confidence because you didn’t have the boldness of the faith in what God’s word says. So you don’t want to let this slip. You know, there’s some people, they never studied the Bible. Why do they call they neglected? They neglect church. They neglect prayer meeting. Some people neglect communion service on Sunday mornings when we have communion service. Every Christian ought to be here for it. You see, there’s a lot of people neglect.
Can you neglect all these things and not take its toll? As we close here, I want you to look very quickly in the book of Hebrews in chapter 12. Hebrews chapter 12. So now that we’re in Hebrews in chapter 12, he says to you and I, let us run with patience, the race that is set before us. So he’s talking about the believers running a race. the course that said before us. Not only to run the race, but to finish the race.
God wants us to finish. See the inverse two, looking under Jesus the author and finisher. You see, you started, finish. I started serving the Lord right after I trusted Christ as my Savior 51 years ago. For 51 years, I don’t know how much time God’s going to give me, but I want to finish my course with joy. I want to finish the ministry that God’s given to me. Every person should have within them the desire. I want them live in such a way that it pleases the Lord.
And God’s going to bless you. when you get tired and weary and think it’s not worth it. You begin to question and doubt the word of God, he says in verse three, consider him, who? Christ, consider him that endured, endured. See, that’s what we have to do. We have to endure all those things that we don’t enjoy. It’s easy to endure the things we enjoy, but what about the things that we don’t? You’ve got to go through them And people will say things and cut you and hurt you.
And sometimes you will fail and fail so miserably and make you so sick inside. You don’t wonder why am I so rotten. I’m such a rotten individual. I don’t deserve anything from God. Well, now God got you where he wants you. Realizing that whatever God gets out of your life, it’s because of what he did for you and through you. So he says here in verse five, And you have forgotten the exhortations which speaketh unto you as unto what?
Chron, you have forgotten who you are. You’re God’s child. Don’t you realize as a child of God you’re supposed to serve the Lord? He’s your father. And he makes this statement. He says, my son despise not thou thee what? Chasing of the Lord and faint when thou art rebuked of him.” In other words, the word, fame, he chases me. He didn’t give me what I would. I quit. I stopped. No. If the preacher has to get on your toes and you walk out those doors and their bloodiest can be, are you going to use that as an opportunity not to come back?
I’m not going back there. Why? He offended me. He hurt my feelings. Also, you mean you want to go to a church where the preacher won’t hurt your feelings. Grow up. Grow up. Well, I don’t like my mother and father. Why? Because they spanked me when I did something wrong. What do you think the preacher’s supposed to do? Like Paul says in one place, he says, praise you. He said, I praise you not. I’m not going to praise you for that because you’re wrong.
I will not offend you if you’re right. If you’re doing right, I’m what I say anything on the body. You just when you’re not right and it irritates you because after that, I’m a sweet, wonderful guy. I’ve known me for 70 years. Well, anyway, see there in verse six, for whom the Lord chastens and scourges every son whom he receive him. So this is what he’s talking about whenever you’re saying willfully against the Lord. What do you have to look forward to?
a certain fiery judgment from God, because God’s going to have to chase and discipline you. You can’t live in rebellion against God and get away with it. Can you rebel against the Lord? Yes, you can. Is there a price to pay? Oh, yes, there is. That’s why he behooves every child of God. Don’t neglect the things that will make you strong. Look up here. This hand representing you and me, God says that He loves us, but we’re born into this world with an old sinful nature, means we send naturally.
You don’t have to be taught how to sin. Well, I did. No, everybody sins. This wall represents sin. We have all sinned. And because we’ve sinned, the wages of sin is death, so we have a debt to pay. But God loves us, but He doesn’t want us to pay for the sin because that’s eternal separation from Him. So the Bible says to go to heaven we have to be perfect as righteous as God. None of us are perfect. None of us are righteous.
We’re all sinners. And God says you cannot save yourself by what you do. We need a Savior. This hand represents Jesus Christ. He’s the Lord. God in the place. He came into the world because He loves us. Hates our sin because it separates us from Him. So what Christ did for one person He did for the whole world took all the sin of all the world. May one payment came back from the dead never has to do it again.
They’re all paid. And God says, when I believe that He did it for me, He puts this payment to my account. I’m forgiven of all my sins. It’s just like I died and I paid for all of my sins. My debt is paid. So I don’t have to go to hell and pay for sin because He paid for my sins. And once you accept that payment, it’s a done deal paid in full. That’s why I can’t go to hell.
I can’t go to hell today. I can’t go tomorrow. I can’t go in 10 years. go in 10 years, I can never go to hell. He died for my sins. Oh, that’s good news. Now, if you’ll believe he did it for you, guess what he’ll do? He’ll save you just like he did me. Everybody gets to heaven the same way. You accept Christ as your Savior or you don’t go. Isn’t that fair? All you have to is believe it.
Well, you believe that he did this for you. Now you’re here this morning and I don’t know if you trust Christ as Savior and I want you to. I want you to go to heaven. I don’t want you to be deceived. I don’t want you to think, well, I’m going to do the best I can and you don’t get it. The best you can do is not good enough. You need a payment for your saying Christ did that. Will you trust him as your Savior?
Let’s pray shall we? Every head bond, there be our clothes, no one looking around. If you hear this morning and you’ve never trusted Christ as your Savior, would you trust Him? All I want you to do is right where you’re setting. I want you to talk to the Lord. You see, you don’t make a mistake this way. Only the Lord knows your thoughts. He can read your mind, but just tell him something simple like this. Lord, I’m a sinner.
I don’t understand it all, but I believe Jesus Christ died on that cross cross and paid for my sins. Today, right now, this moment, I will accept Jesus Christ as my Savior. the brain. And friend God said, if you would do just that much, it’s all you have to do. That He would save you from having you. Give you eternal life and you get to go to heaven on what Jesus Christ Registrusted. I’m going to ask you in just a moment, your hand doesn’t save you.
just lets me know that what I said made sense to you. And I like to know. So we’ll hit by a nice close, is there anyone at all? This morning say, yes, I will trust Christ as my savior and preach I like you to pray for me. Would you slip it up real quickly, put it up right back down? If you’ve already trust the Lord, you don’t have to do it again. But if you’ve never done it before, say right now I will trust the Lord.
Would you slip it up real quickly, put it up right down and with all? Yes, God bless you, man. I appreciate that. son of good judgment. Anyone else? You can put it down. Remember by trusting Christ as your Savior, He gives you eternal life and He’ll never catch you out and never lose you. You that know Christ is your Savior. Has He been talking to you this morning? Are you walking with Him? I want you to serve Him. Our Father, we thank You so much for all You’ve done for us, especially for the individual that indicated by an uplifted hand that they would trust your Savior.
By doing so, they become your child, your child forever. You’ll never cast them out, never lose them. We ask your blessings on each person here to help them to understand the value of walking with you, growing up, letting Christ build them into a strong house. We thank you for the Christ’s name. Amen. You’ve been listening to Bibleline, a teaching ministry of Calvary Community Church in Tampa, Florida, with Dr. Ralph Arnold. We pray that you were blessed by today’s message.
