Now, I want you to take your Bible and look in Psalms chapter one. Psalms chapter one, we were in the Bible study, for the men’s Bible study on Saturday, somebody asked if anybody could quote the first psalm. And Steve Pastor Knack stood up and did it. I bet he can’t do it now though. He probably can’t do it now. He probably can’t do it now. There’s a microphone right here. Hello, turn this thing on. Steve, come on down here.
I want you to quote the first Psalm. Both of you? Both Steve’s, one of both Steve’s come on down here and hold the microphone between the two of you and quote the first Psalm. I wanna see this. You got a microphone down there? Yeah, they got one right there. All right. Here they come. You’re talking about Chris. Heh heh heh heh heh. Hi buddy. All right, here they go. They’re gonna quote the first Psalm. Blessed is the man that walketh not in the council of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of the sinners, nor siteth in the seat of the scornful, but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in his law does he meditate day and night, and he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water that bring forth his fruit and his season.
His leaf shall not wither. What’s where he’d do it? the shall prosper. The ungodly are not so, but I like the chaff was the wind drive it the way. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment nor sit in the congregation with the righteous. For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous, but the way of the ungodly shall perish. Give them a big hand. That’s simple. See there, you didn’t know that, but you know, they can quote the whole Bible like that?
Wait a minute. You realize that it does help to put the Word of God into your mind. But as that verse says, and it’s so important, look down in verse 2, look in verse 2, chapter 1 and verse 2, his delight is in the law of the Lord. That word delight, what does it mean to be well pleased? To be well pleased with the word of God. You have to have a high holy reverential respect for the word of God because when you realize this isn’t man’s word, this is God’s word and it’s supposed to be precious to us.
So we read it, we learn it, we memorize it and we apply it and that’s where wisdom comes from. Now take your Bible and turn to the 40th Psalm. The 40th Psalm, it’s loaded with some jewels in there because it, once again, it’s talking about Christ and you can see it in there. But in the 40th Psalm, it talks about, I waited patiently for the Lord and I inclined my ear and so forth. And it was like a man that was in a bottom of a pit.
And he says, and God brought me up out of the pit, set my feet upon the solid rock, put a song in my heart and blah blah blah. All that’s in verse 2. In case you didn’t see that. And then he goes on down here and he makes some wonderful statements. But look what he says there in verse 7, because some of this is quoted even in the New Testament in the book of Hebrews in chapter 10. It’s written there.
Where he makes a statement in verse 7, then said, I lo, I come in the volume of the book it is written of me. I and you are not lying this, I delight to do thy will. In other words, I get pleasure out of pleasing God. He taught, I get pleasure out of pleasing my Heavenly Father. You see, if you seek to have people be pleasing to you, it won’t always happen. And you’re not always going to, you know, people aren’t not going to make you the center of their life.
But we are to make Christ the center of our life. And our life should revolve around the Lord, not around people around the Lord. Wrap yourself around the Lord. People come and go. We live and we die today. Betty asked me to go buy and see Betty. I don’t, what’s her last name? I can’t even think of her last name. But Betty, and she used to come and she’d sit back there in a wheelchair and she’s up in age now and she’s at home in the hospice care.
And so anyway, we went by the seer after the downtown Bible study. And she was just so thrilled that, you know, somebody come by the door see her. But she knows the Lord, she loves the Lord. And is it possible for a person to be land in bed, still to delight themselves in the Lord, and to still be pleasing to God? You see, it doesn’t matter where you are, it doesn’t matter what you’re going through. You can still in every situation, regardless whether it’s good or bad or indifferent, nothing else matters.
You can always brag on God. Be a blessing to God, please God. And you’d be surprised, That’s why the Lord talks about rejoice always. Praise the Lord in all things. Be thankful in all things. Because it’s so hard not. I mean, it’s just so many things that goes on in your life and it pulls us down. And sometimes we don’t always think the right way. I was talking downtown Bible said it today and I was talking about the book of 2 Peter and chapter three where he said, I stir up your mind, stir up your remembrance.
And sometimes it’s not that we have to learn something new, is that we have to be reminded of the things we’ve already known. So you can’t always come to church and learn something new, but sometimes you kind of, you know, I’ve already known that, but I forgot that. I forgot. And to refresh your mind, refresh. But look what he says here in Psalms. When he says in verse eight, “‘I delight to do thy will. O my God, ye thy law is within my heart.
I have preached righteousness in the great congregation. Lo, I have not refrained my lips, O Lord, of thou knoweth. And this is why it is so important. And you’ll look over there in verse 9 of chapter 41, and you’ll see another verse because not everything always goes away. But it says, Yea, my own familiar friend in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, have lifted up his heel against me. Now in Psalm 6 to 9, 25, we know this is talking about Judas, carry it.
But see, in spite of all the things that goes wrong, you still have opportunities to thank the Lord and praise the Lord. Somebody mentioned this and I’m not sure who it was but I’ve heard it even recently. If we only had have tomorrow what we were thankful to the Lord today, what would we have tomorrow? And as you go through life, did you realize that you can make a list of all the negative things that goes wrong in your life and everybody else’s too.
But have you sat down and made a list of all the things that are good and think about these things? You know the Lord says the God of peace will be with you if you think on these things, things that are of a good report, things that are good and kind and virtuous. If you think on those things that are right, then you’ll have peace. You think about things that mess up your mind and you won’t have peace, you won’t have joy.
And so it makes a difference. Can you commit your thoughts unto the Lord? Look in 119th Psalm. Just going over to your right to 119th Psalm. 119th Psalm. And you’ll notice there in verse 24, verse 24, everyone needs counselors. I was talking to somebody today and I was talking about, you know, you need to have a multitude of counselors where you really think things through and you discuss and talk and there’s safety, there’s wisdom in listening to other people’s viewpoints on things so that you can try to make a wise decision.
But you’ll read the Scriptures and it says that David, he encouraged himself in the Lord. He encouraged himself. Let me say he had to figure out what’s going on, what do I need to do, and he talked to the Lord. And that helped him because, see, people are not always around you to help you. They’re not always there to give you that word of wisdom and you sometimes wish they were. And there’s times when you give people some of your wisdom and they don’t want it.
Don’t you admire the wisdom of individuals who comes to you for counseling because they just deem you so intelligent and so smart. You say, nobody ever asked me anything. Mm-hmm. Okay. answer that. There might be a reason. But now notice what he says here in 119. So I’m looking verse 24. Thy testimonies also are, and you are on the my delight, and my what? My counselors. You see the Bible talks about by of me gold tried in the fire.
Let God counsel you. Let God talk to you. One of the greatest counselors in all the world this the Lord. And sometimes we need counseling. I’ve had people call me up in their community and say, yeah, can I can I come and talk to you? I need some counseling. And I said the only kind of counseling I know to give is biblical counseling. That’s the only kind of counseling I know. All I can tell you is what a counselor told me.
And this is the great counseling, the great physician. He’s the one that made us. He understands us. He knows all about life. He knows all about problems. He knows how we think, how we feel, what we’re going through, all of our fears. And so all I can tell you is this is what this great counsel that I know, this is what he said. He says, take these two verses and call me in the morning. And so you go to the book and learn the word of God and you’re delight.
What pleases you should be that I’m so glad God put his thoughts in a book so that I can read and study the mind of God. God’s Word is God’s mind on paper and it’s awesome and it will help us. It’s the best thing in all the world. Look in Proverbs chapter 12. Proverbs chapter 12, just go to your right there, a couple of pages. Proverbs in chapter 12 and there’s another verse here that’s pretty good but look there in verse 20.
Now you ought to on the line verse 20 and also verse 22. Verse 20 says, deceit is in the heart of them and remember I was talking about last Sunday night about the imagination, the mind. How that our biggest problem is what we imagine that’s not real and it can produce fear in your life. And see the Bible says perfect love casts us out fear. True love of God can eliminate fear. He also makes his statement that the Lord doesn’t give us the spirit of fear but of power, love, and of a sound mind.
So when we do have fear and we live in fear and we’re afraid, it could be because we’re not trusting the Lord. And these are emotional feelings that we have so that we can discern for ourselves where we are spiritually. And so here in verse 20, the seed is in the heart of them that imagine evil, but to the counselors of peace is joy. Now remember this, the word of God is what us counselors are to use to comfort others that are hurting.
And there’s always people that are hurting. There’s people that are lost, and there’s children of God, And there’s lost people that need a little counseling. So if you’re gonna counsel somebody, seek to use the scriptures. Whenever I have somebody that I talk to, and I don’t know them, first thing I do is I wanna find out, do you know where you’re going when you die? You say, well, that’s not the biggest problem. It’s the biggest solution to all their problem.
Cause one of the day they’re gonna die and they won’t have none of those problems, right? But when they die, if they go to hell, they got a big problem. So I want to help them with their major problem. So the biggest thing I can do is talk to them about the Lord. So I try to win them to Christ. And I believe that’s the most important thing. Now look there in verse 22. Verse 22, lying lips are abomination to the Lord.
But get this now, the last part. But they that deal truly are His delight. Now we’re talking about pleasing of God, our heavenly Father. God is pleased. He is delighted when you and I speak the truth. Tell the truth. Try to be as honest as you possibly can be because there’s a God who’s watching and if we don’t, you see there in verse 21, there shall no evil happen to the just, but the wicked shall be filled with mischief.
There is consequences to our thoughts, to our attitudes, to our obedience, or our disobedience. So keep those things in mind. Look in Proverbs chapter 15. Now you know that sometimes we’re always referring to Proverbs chapter 15. chapter 15 in verse 1 where it says that a soft answer turneth away wrath. So you always try to give a soft answer. Now that’s more pleasing to people, but there’s, he says, grievous words do what? Look in the last part of verse 1.
Grievous words stir up anger. So here in these scriptures there’s something I I want you to say, look in verse eight now. And verse eight, and you’ll see the value of your prayer life. You’re talking to the Lord. And verse eight, the sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord. But, and you ought to unwind this statement, the prayer of the upright is his delight. There’s a God in heaven who is delighted. He is well pleased when you come to Him in prayer, when you come to Him in prayer.
So there’s things that’s going to happen in your life that’s going to force you to come to the Lord. And so hopefully that you will learn these things that God wants you to learn so that you can grow and be stronger in your Christian life. Now take your Bible and turn to the book of Isaiah chapter 58, the book of Isaiah in chapter 58. I preached a sermon a long time ago utilizing a couple of these verses along with the one that’s over there in Psalms 37 and verse 4 about delight thyself in the Lord and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
What does it mean to delight yourself in the Lord? And as I I was reading one day, I found this verse over here. Now it’s been there all along. Not really many times, but I never saw it from this point of view. Look what he says in verse 12. And verse 12 says of chapter 58, and they, that shall be of thee, shall build the old waste places. Thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations. Thou shalt be called a repair of the breach, a restore a paths to dwell in.
We talk about sometimes the Florida Bible College and that’s getting things going again. We are restore of the paths. We are repairs of the breach. We’re trying to rebuild a foundation that we believe is a very good thing to establishing the old way of doing something. And then he says here in verse 13, because now you’re talking to the Jewish people, You’re talking about the Sabbath day, about the keeping of the law and being holy and doing right. And so he says this in verse 13, if thou turn away from thy foot from the Sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day, get that statement, thy pleasure.
In other words, when you’re doing what you wanna do to please you, then there’s a price to pay. But he says, and call the Sabbath a delight, call the 7 AD light, where you’re pleased with it, where you’ll keep that day, holy unto the Lord, like you’re supposed to, you’d be surprised what God would do. Did you know later on when Jeremiah come on the scene because they did not let the land rest, the way they were supposed to, there was a price to be paid and they only cost them 70 years in captivity.
God collects, God collects. And then he makes the statement here and calls the 7 AD light, the holy of the Lord, honorable and shall honor him and get this. If you want to know what does it mean to delight yourself in the Lord means not doing thy own ways, nor finding thy own pleasure, nor speaking thy own words. Then he says in verse 14, when he says in the book of Psalms 37, verse for delight thyself in the Lord?
I wonder what that means. Well, he tells us what I mean. This is what’s so great about the Word of God. The Word of God teaches the Word of God. It will teach you what it means. Verse 14, then shall thou delight thyself in the Lord. In other words, when there’s things you don’t do, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thy own pleasure, nor speaking thy own word, because you want to speak the Word of God, you want to speak truth.
You want to honor the Lord and praise the Lord and glorify the Lord. When he becomes your focus and he means more to you than anything else in the world. The sinead then you won’t have a problem. Whether people come and go do right do wrong, you got enough just trying to keep yourself straight. Don’t you? We have an old sinful nature and buddy it can get the best of us, any of us. Now look at the last part of verse 14, then shout out the light thyself and the Lord, and get I will cause the, because you did this, I will do this, because you did this, I will do this.
And you wonder why sometimes God doesn’t seem to bless it. Well, it might be because you didn’t do this and you didn’t do that. Always examine yourself. An unexamined life is not worth living. Now, look in Romans chapter 7. Romans chapter 7, and you and I know we battle all the time with our old sinful nature. And sometimes we wonder, can we ever get any new victory? Well look at what he says it. In the book of Romans in chapter 7, he makes this statement.
And And it’s a good statement. How do I get the job done? In verse 22, you ought on the line, for I.D. light in the law of God. Now you’ll see that statement in the Old Testament. We’ve already shown it. But lo and behold, here it is again in the New Testament. I.D. light in the law of God after the inward man. The inward man is the new birth. delight in walking in your new birth. Delight in walking in the spirit, and you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
You will be happier, you will have greater peace of mind, greater joy, and your heavenly Father will be pleased to know in. And whenever life is all over with, and the day comes when we have to stand before the Lord. And he says, well done, my good and faithful servant. Enter thou unto the joys of the Lord. You’re going to be so happy. There’s a day coming when it will be worth it all. It will be worth it all.
God is so good to us. But nobody can make you delight yourself in the Lord. People can try to get you to obey rules and regulations. But that personal walk with God, only you can do that. Nobody can do it for you. Your husband can’t do it for you. wife can’t”},{” do it for you, kids can’t do it for you grandparents nobody can take yourplace between you and God. It’s a personal thing and I hope that not only have you trusted Christ as your Savior but it is your desire to delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart and if you believe it then you know He’s going to fulfill it and you can wait and be patient to see how God’s going to do it.
You don’t have to try to figure it all out. You’re trusting God to do that. You don’t have to manipulate something. You don’t have to be ugly and unkind and mean and you don’t have to do none of that stuff. God talking about being upright. Lips that speak the truth.naissance the Lord, putting them first. I believe you’ll win that way. Look up here. This hand represents you and me. The wallet represents sin. We all have sin upon us. God says that He loves us and I hate our sin but He loves us.
And for us to pay for sin is eternal separation from the Lord. Since we’ve all sinned we’re all condemned but God says that He loves us and He wants us to go to heaven. But to go to heaven we’ve got to be clean as a whistle, no sin but there’s the problem. God will not allow sin, not even one sin into heaven. God would not allow even one sin in the garden of Eden. God doesn’t tolerate any sins at all.
So God says, you cannot earn eternal life. By your good deeds, you’ll never wash away one sin. You’ll never pay for one sin by all of your good deeds. Take all of your good things that you’ve ever done in your whole life. All of them all put together has never taken away one sin. It can’t. It calls the wages of sin. The paper sin is death and hell. This sin represents Jesus Christ. He is the Lord God. In the flesh, he came into this world because he loved the Father.
And he wanted the world to know how much he loved the Father. So he came into the world and what did he do? He took all of our sins. And he didn’t have any. So he didn’t have to die. But he took all of our sins. Why? Because God so loved the world. He gave up his son. He gave his son to pay for our sins. And he came back again from the dead. And God said, if we would believe he did it for us, he would put this.
this payment to our account, and we get to go to heaven on what he did for us. That’s how much God loves us. He loves us that much that he would pay for all of our sins. And if we accept it, then we have a payment for our sins and we don’t have any sins to pay for it to go to hell. We get to go to heaven with the Lord for all eternity. Now God did this, and God looked over the banners of heaven and says, This is my beloved son whom I’m well pleased and everything that he did, he did to please his heavenly Father.
Now here are you and I are and look what he did for us. And he says, will you please me? Would you give me praise and honor and glory? Well what I did, our whole life should be one big thank you to the Lord for what he’s done for us. Let’s pray, show it. With his bow nice clothes and no one looking around. If you’re here tonight and you’ve already trusted Christ as Savior, think about your own personal life.
Forget everybody else’s. Just think about yourself. It’s pleasing God, your purpose. It’s pleasing God, your goal. I pray that it is. And if you have already trusted Christ and you’ve got your desires straightened out about what you want to do with your life and why you want to serve Him, there may be some of you here or watching by internet and you’ve never trusted Christ as your Savior. Did you know it would really please the Lord if you would accept His Son as your Savior?
You are a sinner just like I am. Christ died for you just like He did for me. And He made a payment for my sins and for yours and all we have to do is believe it. If you’ve never done so, I pray that you’ll do that and do it right now. Right on the screen, as a little statement, it says, yes, I will trust Christ as my Savior. I pray that you will do so. Let us know. Just click it on and let us know that you that were listening, somebody trusts a Christ’s Savior.
It doesn’t save you. It’s new trusting Christ as your Savior. That’s what saves you. And God said that He would give you as a free gift, the eternal life, and never cast you out. and not pray that you’ll do just that. Our Father, we thank You so much for the privilege You’ve given to us to not only know You as Savior but to serve You. We just pray for wisdom and all these things that have been mentioned. And with Your head still bowed and your eyes closed and no one looking around, is there anyone at all say, yes, that made sense to me and I want to trust Christ as my Savior tonight and preach I like You to pray for me.
Would you just slip in a very quickly and put it right back down, say, well, it’s all. And what it all. I pray everyone has trust in the Lord. And follow me, just commit each person here to you, those that are watching by internet, help us to be a blessing to everyone we can to explain these things and pray Lord that they would seek you and honor you in Christ’s name you pray.
