We hear a lot today from various denominations about the Holy Spirit, but understand this. In the book of Corinthians when he talks about I fear less, you know, the old devil alone. Use his subtlety and corrupt your minds from this simplicity that is in Christ. And whenever that is done, there’s generally a false Jesus, a false gospel and a false spirit. I want to try to give you what I believe is a correct understanding of of the filling of the Holy Spirit.
We often hear, you know, you need to be baptized by the Holy Spirit, and you gotta be indroced by the Holy Spirit. You need to be sealed by the Holy Spirit. And sometimes we wonder what does all of that mean? Because the Spirit’s not something that you feel and it fills the Spirit. So how do we know it happens? Well, I thought we’d take a little gandry at the scriptures and look what it says. Look at your note there first of all, when we trusted Jesus Christ as our Savior, that very moment you were indwelt by the Holy Spirit.
Now turn in your Bible, I want you to say, 1 Corinthians chapter 3, 1 Corinthians in chapter 3. And look in verse 16, these people here in the book of Corinth were not spiritually minded believers. Bible describes them as carnally minded Christians. In other words, they were not walking with the Lord. They were not obedient Christians. But God calls them saints. He says they were believers. He says they’ve all been baptized by the Holy Spirit. And he says here in verse 16, no ye not that ye are the temple of God, that the Spirit of God dwelt in you.
So once you trusted Christ as your Savior, it had nothing to do with how you’re living. It has nothing to do with all the sins in your life. It doesn’t have anything to do with all of your addictions, your drugs, and all that. You name it. It has nothing to do with that. Is that did you trust Christ as your Savior? If you did, if you did, if you’ve ever trusted the Lord as your Savior. As your only hope of going to heaven because you believe that when He died He died for you.
You were in dwelt at that moment with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is God Himself living inside of you. And the Bible says that your body, this body of flesh that we have, this is where He lived. God does not live in this church. When Christ died for the church, I assure you it was not for this podium, it was not for the carpet, was not for the rafters, it was not for this piece of land, it was for you, you and I are the believers that make up the body of Christ.
And therefore, our bodies is the temple of the Holy Spirit. Look in the book of Ephesians in chapter 1 real quick, the book of Ephesians chapter 1. You’ll notice in verse 13 it makes this statement, in whom ye also trusted, referring back to the previous verse where it says Jesus Christ, in whom Christ you also trusted. What did you trust Him for? Well after you heard the gospel, the good news of how you can be saved, you heard that, you believed it.
Having believed that You were sealed that very moment with the Holy Spirit. So he says here in verse 13, In whom you also trusted after that you heard the word of truth, the gospel, which is the good news of your salvation, in whom also after that you believed you were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise. In John chapter 14, Jesus Christ promised that the Holy Spirit would come. He says, He will be another comforter just like Him, and He will teach you, and He will be with you and in you forever.
And now notice what He says over in the book of Ephesians chapter 4 and verse 30. Ephesians chapter 4 and verse 30. He makes a statement, and you and I, as a child of God, living in an old sinful body, the Holy Spirit, living in an unholy body, but the Holy Spirit can be grieved by the things you and I do with this old sinful body. So he says, grieve not the Holy Spirit of God whereby you’re sealed unto the day of redemption, the day when God redeems the body.
The body has never been changed. Has it been redeemed yet? Paid for but not changed. God says you’re going to change these vile bodies into the fashion of His glorious body. We’re going to be just like the Lord with a glorified body, a perfect body with no sinful nature. And so He makes a statement here in verse 31, let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and evil speaking be put away from you with our malice be a kind one to another tender hearted forgiven one another even as God for Christ sake hath forgiven you not going to forgive you he hath already done it now because of what he hath done God said I want you to let the Holy Spirit that lives within you change you from glory to glory by liberty setting you free from the power of that old sinful nature that lives within your natural body.
So you and I, when we trusted Christ as our Savior, we were indwelled by the Holy Spirit. We were sealed by the Holy Spirit, means that it cannot be undone. It can’t be undone. And then He makes a statement, we are baptized by the Holy Spirit. Take your Bible and turn to 1 Corinthians in chapter 12. First Corinthians and chapter 12. You do not find any commands in the scripture to be indwelt by the Holy Spirit, to be sealed by the Holy Spirit, to be baptized by the Holy Spirit, but you do find in scripture a command to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
But you need to know what they mean in order to understand what he’s talking about. So here in first Corinthians in chapter 12, look there in verse 12, look in verse 12, for as the body is one and hath many members and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. For by one spirit, the Holy Spirit, are we get this all baptized into one body. Now these believers in the place of were guilty of all kinds of sins in the life of the church.
They were really messing up pretty bad. They were getting drunk at the communion. And another guy was sleeping with his mother, or maybe stepmother. But they’re all kind of wickedness that they had. Paul says, I could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, spiritual but as on the carnal. For are you not yet carnal? You walk like lost men. You live like the world. Christians living like the world. Now some people would say that’s a sign you weren’t really saved.
No it’s not. It’s a sign you’re living like the world. Not a sign you’re not saved. It’s a sign that you’re living in the flesh. It’s a sign that you are disobedient. It’s a sign that you are rebellious, it doesn’t mean that you’re not saved. Because saved people do wrong things. Because you still have that old sinful body. God didn’t change the body. He didn’t take away your sinful nature. If He did, you would never do anything wrong after you got saved.
And if that’s true, where’s all these perfect people? Evidently nobody saved. Because if they were saved and you wouldn’t do any of those bad things anymore, everybody would be doing anything right. And you wouldn’t be offended. You know, you wouldn’t get your feelings so hurt all the time and you wouldn’t get mad and feel with envy and jealousy and bitterness and backbiting. You named the sin and you know if you said here this day you know you’re capable of every sin in the book.
But then you may not be honest, how do I know? But Lewis says in verse 13 again, For by one spirit are we all baptized into one’s body? Whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free and have been all made to drink into one’s spirit. Everyone who trusts Christ’s Savior are automatically baptized by the Holy Spirit into the body of Christ. When Jesus Christ came on the scene, John the Baptist was already a forerunner and he said, I baptize you with water, but he that comeeth after me will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.
Jesus is the baptizer. He baptizes all of us into the body of Christ by the Holy Spirit. What he means is simply this. During his ministry, he never baptized anybody by the Holy Spirit. never happened. It didn’t happen until the day of Pentecost, the baptism of the Holy Spirit, and the baptism of the Holy Spirit did not happen because everybody was gathered together in the upper room and then were all in one accord and they prayed down the Holy Spirit.
No, it didn’t. The Holy Spirit came on the day of Pentecost because it’s prophesied in scripture. The Holy Spirit came because Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would come when he leaves the Holy Spirit’s coming And he even told it in the book of Acts in chapter 1, not many days hints, not many days from now. Ten days later the Holy Spirit came on the day of Pentecost right on schedule, not because they prayed him, no they did not.
Had nothing to do with that. Scripture says what happened and why it happened. So the baptism of the Holy Spirit is simply this. Whenever you believe that when Christ died on the cross, He died in your place. That was him on the cross in your place. So in God’s eyes, that was you hanging on the cross. You died on that cross and you paid for your sins. And you were buried and you came back from the dead. He did that for you.
And so in your place, this is what happened. So God put what he did to my account as though I did it. That’s why Paul says, I am crucified with Christ. Nevertheless, I live. Not I, but Christ liveth in me. In the life which I now live, I live by the faith of the Son of God, who liveth and abighteth in me. So you and I died on that cross. And that’s why when you accept that death payment, as your payment for your sins, you died.
His death is put to your account, as though you did it, but you didn’t really do it. And when Christ comes back from the dead, you are to be raised to walk in newness of life. But you may not walk in newness of life, but it won’t change the fact of how God sees you. God sees you in Christ, having His righteousness that was given to you as a free gift. So all of the people who trust Christ as Savior, our baptized are placed within light in the body of Christ and we are the bride of Christ.
And one day as this body will become one we’re going to have a wedding and the next time I get to be the bride not now. If you are a man and you’ve become the bride now, something’s wrong with you. It’s not right. That’s wicked. Let God tell us what’s right and let God tell us what is wrong. So that’s why you don’t find scripture telling you to be baptized by the Holy Spirit. There is no command, but it happened the very day you trusted Christ as your Savior.
Now if you have a misconception of what it means to be baptized by the Holy Spirit, yeah you and I have all kind of fringe things that goes with that. But if you go by what the Bible says, you have to make those other things up. They call this not there. Now take your notes there and I just want to see this. There are no commands in Scripture to be indwelt, sealed, or baptized by the Holy Spirit because they happen automatically when you were saved.
Now if you’ve never been saved, this has never happened. You have never received the Holy Spirit. You’ve never been indwelt by the Holy Spirit and you’ve never been baptized by the Holy Spirit unless you are saved. If you’re not saved, that’s never happened to you. You could have an experience. And many people have a lot of experiences. That doesn’t mean it’s a biblical experience. That doesn’t mean it’s a God. That doesn’t mean it was the Holy Spirit. If you had that experience and it’s not from the Holy Spirit, then you should know it was from an unholy spirit, not from what God’s Word has to say.
The next statement I have here, facts about the filling of the Holy Spirit. Being filled with the Holy Spirit or full of the Holy Spirit is found only 15 times in the New Testament. Foldest of the Holy Spirit isn’t found at all. It is found 14 out of 15 times in the writing of one human writer, not author, which is Luke in the book of Luke and the book of Acts. 14 out of the 15 times you’ll find those in the book of Luke and the book of Acts, 14 out of the 15.
Now I know you’re not going to believe this, but I wrote everyone I’m down here. Every one of them is here. So it will help you to remember this because there’s a lot of preachers that will try to tell you you need to get baptized by the Holy Spirit. You need to have the baptism of fire. Did you know the baptism of fire in the book of Matthew in chapter 3 is hell? You can have it if you want it.
I don’t want it. Because I know what the Bible says about it. That’s what it’s talking about. So I don’t want the baptism of fire. And I’ve had people ask me, says, Yankee, have you been baptized by the Holy Ghost? I say, yes I have. And they think that I mean something else. Have you spoken tongue yet? And I say, no. I’ve never had a Holy Ghost fit for the lightning strikes. And the flames jumped from my fingers. Cheers from down the spine.
I’ll never jump high and wait low and and all in between. I’ll never shook and quivered or anything like that. And I’ll never blah-blah-blah-blah-blah-blah-blah-blah-blah and then never. Well don’t you desire that? No. It’s not of God, it’s not of God. That’s not the Bible. If you don’t know the Bible you get calm in emotions and feelings and experience but you You don’t find that in the Bible. So you need to understand. Now I sympathize with people who got a lot of different kinds of belief.
It’s just that it’s wrong. I can love people. They know perfect people. So I can love anybody. But I believe that they’re wrong. Totally. All I do is try to get them to make sure they trust the Christ of Savior. Because see, that’s the most important thing of all of us. Who are you going to spend eternity? Not did you have an experience. I don’t crave and seek something that the Bible doesn’t tell me I need to. So do I seek to be baptized by the Holy Spirit?
No. That I already have been. I was baptized by the Holy Spirit into the one body. That happened the day I trusted Christ as my Savior. So I don’t have to ever worry about that ever again. Now take your Bible and look there in the book of Luke. The book of Luke chapter 1. Now get your seat belts on. You know we got a few verses here that we need to look at. Luke gives us the historical events. It doesn’t tell us to do anything out of these 14 times.
It doesn’t tell us this is what we have to do. Because you’ll find out that the feeling of the Holy Spirit was different and just about all the cases. They’re different. They weren’t always the same. But here in the book of Luke in chapter 1. You’ll notice a couple things. First of all, look there in your notes at the first five things I got here. There are no conditions to be met, no feelings recorded. No feelings are recorded. No commands for us to do likewise.
No teaching about absolute sanctification. No commands to speak in tongues. None. There are no commands. Now, verse 15, makes this statement in chapter 1. For he shall be great, talking about John the Baptist is going to be born. For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. And he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost even from his mother’s womb. How in the world can you be filled with the Holy Ghost from your mother’s womb?
Well, I believe that he had a godly mother and father that were filled by the Holy Spirit. And because they will raise this child in the nurturing the admonition of the Lord, they are being controlled by parents who are controlled by the Holy Spirit that will teach the child. And I believe that’s what it’s referring to. So from a child he was taught and raised and nurtured along and he knew what God wanted him to do. And later on Jesus says that hasn’t been a greater man born of a woman than John the Baptist.
You know, he didn’t get to live very long. How many of you in this room are over 30 years of age? Mm-hmm. You know, he didn’t live much longer than that. And almost everybody’s heard of John the Baptist, but he never wrote anything. He was just like a wild man, I guess. Running around eating, you know, locusts and wild honey. I don’t know. It sounded pretty good to me, but you know, chocolate grasshoppers might be all right, but mmm.
But notice, the Bible says that he is going to be used by God to prepare the people for the coming of the Messiah. Also, look there at the next scripture, chapter 1 and verse 41. Mary now has found out, okay, she’s going to have a child. So she goes to see cousin Elizabeth, then, lo and behold, they got together. And so it says here in verse 39, and Mary arose in those days and went into the healed country with haste into a city of Judah and entered into the house of Zachariah and saluted Elizabeth.
And it came to pass that when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost, the babe leaped in her womb. Now how high do you think that babe leaped without taking the Elizabeth weather? But understand, It was Elizabeth that was filled with the Holy Spirit. Now I remember, and I’ve heard stories of women who, all of a sudden, if they hear something wonderful, the baby will jump in the mother’s womb.
And you can be filled with joy and happiness and something like that, or something happening next thing. You know that baby just jumping all over the place. It doesn’t mean that, well, if you’re filled with the Holy Spirit, you’re leaving your mother’s womb. Wait a minute. I’m not in my mother’s womb. So how can you nail this one thing that was a historical event and say this applies to everybody? Well, if you’re filled with the Holy Spirit, this is the way it has to be.
Doesn’t have to be that way. Because here it only makes this statement. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and she said something. She did in verse 42 and she spake out with a loud voice. voice. So that means that if you’re filled with the Holy Spirit, you’ll always speak with a loud voice. Is that how you would translate that? Apply that. So I speak a lot of times with a loud voice. That means I’m always filled with the Holy Spirit.
I’ve had some people talk out and they say, I don’t mind Yanki’s preaching, but I just can’t stand it when he gets loud. I’ve had other people like it said, oh, I love it when you get loud. But man, I can spit the church really easy, you know, just like loud. But there’s things to understand that you were filled with the Holy Spirit and all she did was said, blessed are thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
She didn’t speak in tongues. She didn’t jump, bring the yel and have a Holy Ghost fit and run up and down the aisle. She didn’t You won’t find that in the scriptures. None of it. You can read and study every verse that’s on it. Now, if you want to trust in an experience, we’ll take this thing here. Put it in the trash. But don’t say the Bible said, the Bible did not say it. Look at the next statement. In verse 67, looking for 67.
And his father, Zechariah, was filled with the Holy Ghost and he prophesied. See, not the same thing happened with every one of them that was filled with the Holy Spirit. But you see, whenever you trust Christ the Savior, all become the temple of the Holy Spirit. All are sealed by the Holy Spirit. All are baptized by the Holy Spirit. But when you’re filled with the Holy Spirit, it It could be a lot of different things, not always the same thing.
But it means that the Holy Spirit is leading and guiding in whatever it may be and what He prophesied and what she said and how the parents raised the kid. But you apply it in the right way according to the context and you won’t have any problem with it. So we’re here in verse 67 and his father, Zachariah, was filled with the Holy Ghost and prophesied, and look what he said that was given to him by the Holy Spirit, and then he said what the Holy Spirit demanded.
Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he hath visited and redeemed his people, and have raised up and horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David, as he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets which have been since the world began. So here you have a portion of Scripture being given by Zechariah. John De Baptist is his father. So all these things, yes, and they were filled with the Holy Spirit. Take your Bible and also look there in chapter 4.
Chapter 4 and verse 1. And look there in verse 1. And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost. Fullness of the Holy Spirit is not in the Scriptures. full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. Being 40 days tempted of the devil. Now remember that it was the Holy Spirit that led Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. God pints no man, but God can allow the devil to tent all of us, because God has a reason to purpose.
To try, if you have trusted Christ as your Savior, you and I are supposed to trust the Lord, to lead us by the Holy Spirit that we cannot see. And the Holy Spirit leads us according to the truth of the Word of God. The Holy Spirit can never lead you to do anything that’s unholy. He always leads you to do that which is holy. So you and I are to understand that whatever you’re doing with your life, and if it’s not right, it’s not the Holy Spirit that’s leading and guiding you.
He always leads according to the truth of the word of God. So as you go through here and you find that, here you are, your child of God. Do you think the Lord might lead you into a dead end, to detours dry holes, to be tempted of the devil? And we find out in scripture that that is true. God will allow his children to be led into a boxed in canyon where there’s no way out. We remember the story of Moses with the children of Israel, leading them right up there to the Red Sea and they were boxed in and the armies of Pharaoh coming after them.
They couldn’t get it crossed. They couldn’t run. They couldn’t hide. Boxed in. God did that. But God also had a way. And it was you read in there about the temptations in chapters 10 of the book of Corinthians when he makes this statement. There have no temptation taken you but such is as common a man but God is faithful and will not allow you to be tempted above that which you are able and will also give you a way of escape that you may be able to bear it.
There’s a way out of every trial, a way out of every temptation. There’s a way out. Because God doesn’t box us in where we have no solution. That’s what He promises. It’s just that we don’t seek for one, or we don’t want one. Maybe we want to yield to the temptation. But understand the Holy Spirit lives within us to lead us, to guide us, to teach us what the Word of God has to say.
