But look what he says here. He fled away, and then in verse 16, but Brack pursued after the chariots after the host until a Harasheth of the Gentiles and all the hosts of Caesera fell upon the edge of the sword and there was not a man left. Now would you say that’s a pretty good fight? But you don’t find any details. Now there’s a detail here about how Caesera got killed and it talks about how that he went there to, you know, because he was the, went there in this place looking verse 17, hobbits of syrup fled away on his feet to the tent of jail, the wife of Hebrew, the kingite.
And there was peace between Jabin, the king of Hazar and the house of Hebrew, the kingite. Of all the places that he had to go, and they had already broke off from the kingites, and then he is looking for a place of safety. And so he goes to the place and there’s the wife. So he says here in verse 18, J out went out to meet Sisera, she is a woman. Said unto him, turn in my Lord, turn into me, fear not, and when he had turned in unto her, into the tent, she covered him with a mantel.
And he said unto her, give me, I pray, a little water to drink, for I am thirsty. And she opened a bottle of milk and gave him drink and covered him. Again, he said in the door, stands in the tent and it shall be when any man death come and inquire of them, say, is there any man here? Thou shalt say, no. So he told her what to say and took it down. I mean, he’s had a hard day.
He’d been running for his life. He’s tired and he’s thirsty. So he goes to sleep. It’s not good to close your eyes. when there’s a woman around. There’s a reason not this is in here. Does it remind you a little bit of a guy named Samson who went to a woman’s barbershop? When I used to read that I said, man, I’ll never go to a woman’s barbershop. You know a woman’s gonna cut my hair? Well, I have now been to a woman’s barbershop and they’ve cut my hair.
But anyway, you go back here and you’ll find Now something happened in verse 20. Again, he said in her, stands in the door. And in verse 21, then jail, Haber’s wife, took a nail of the tent and took a hammer in her hand, went softly unto him, smote the nail into his temples and fastened it into the ground. For he was fast asleep and weary and he died. Well, you would die too if you had your head nailed to the ground.
I mean, I don’t know how long this knife, this nail was, that they put down the stakes for the tent, but this woman did him in. And so, remember where Deborah says, for Sisera is not for your honor and not for your glory, for he shall be taken by a woman. So here’s a woman that did this man in. And here is Deborah, a woman that God used in order to free the people of Israel from the Canaanites. And now notice what happened.
It says that in verse 22, “…and behold as Barak pursues the sinner, jail came out to meet him and said to him, Come, I will show thee the man whom thou seeketh. And when he came into her tent, behold, the sinner laid dead and the nail was in his temple.” So God subdued on that day. Now, we meant, what did God have to do with this? I mean, these people did this, right? But you know that behind the Saint God says and told Deborah, I’m going to give you victory.
She believed what God said. She had to talk, you know, back into believing her, but victory did come. See, God doesn’t always tell us how it’s going to be accomplished. We just got to walk through it. And He’ll walk with us through it. And And you’ll see how that God is going to work in your life. Now see, a lot of people want to see God do something. Remember this, it’s kind of like the big elephant that’s walking across the swinging bridge, bong, bong, bong, bong, bong, bong, and this mosquito comes along and gets a ride on the back of that elephant.
And I get to the other side that Mosqueda says, boy, we really shook that bridge, didn’t we? There’s always somebody who wants to get credit for what somebody else did. But you see in the next chapter, there’s what we call the Song of Deborah. Now when you go back to Deuteronomy, you also find that there was a song of Moses, a song victory when you come out of the book of Exodus in chapter 14 they had this great victory going through the water and then they had a victory song giving God credit for what God did.
Well, the same thing happened again here. But look down in verse 23. So God subdued on that day, Jabin the king of Canaan before the children of Israel. God did this, but God used a woman. God used to women. God even used Barak and look how many tribes are where they’re 12 tribes but not all of the tribes came together. Not all of them helped in this time. You see God called for help. God called for help and they did not come.
Just look over there very quickly in verse 23 of chapter 5 where it says, curse Yimmarath said the angel of the Lord, curse Yim bitterly the inhabitants thereof because they came not to the help of the Lord, to the help of the Lord against the mighty. God had a plan, but his plan included all the tribes of Israel uniting together and God wanted that to be done. But does everybody always do what they’re supposed to do. You’ll find out some time in your Christian life how much easier it would have been in various parts of the ministry if everybody helped a little.
A picture of five men up here with a great big old log on their shoulder and these five men are carrying this log and they going to take it over there. But that log is so heavy and they can’t get other people to help. And because they can’t get somebody to help, a couple of those guys really get discouraged. And so two of them says, I quit. Now there’s only three carrying that log. Is it heavier or lighter?
Is it true that sometimes people just quit? And when they quit, the low doesn’t get lighter It gets heavier. It means that the load has been placed upon the shoulders of fewer individuals that’s got to do the work. And almost every ministry, probably 10% of all the people do the work. Wouldn’t it be native? All the people was involved in doing all the work. But sometimes it doesn’t work that way. So if everybody else isn’t going to do it, I guess I won’t either.
Or are you the kind of a person if it’s just me and the Lord? I’m still going to do it and do what God wants you to do. But look there in verse 1, then sing Deborah and Burek, they begin to sing a song. Now after they just had a victory, what should they do? Well, they sung. They were filled with joy. They were happy. were praising the Lord. The inverse to praise the Lord for the avenging of Israel.
And look at this part, when the people willingly offered themselves. People volunteered. To obey God. So God don’t make you do things, but God will bless you if you do. And God, when he gets through, could make you wish you had of. So this happened. Now look there in verse four. Lord, when thou windeth out of seer, when thou marches out of the field of Edom, the earth trembled in the heavens, drop the clouds also of drop water, the mountains melted from before the Lord.
Sinai from before the Lord God of Israel. See, sometimes things happen like they used to happen. Well, God does once, he might do again. So even back there when Moses came out and lo and behold, at Mount Sinai, when God spoke and the earth shook and the darkness, the clouds, We see there’s something that happened here too. So how were they going to win this battle? So when they went up by the mountain sea, they’re gonna be up here.
Deborah’s gonna tell them when to come down. They’re coming across here. And there is a brook. There is a Kedron river. There is a dry river. But something begins to happen. It begins to rain. When it begins to rain, all of a sudden you’ve got a flash flood. Now here’s all these chariots of iron down here in this plane. And whenever there’s a lot of water, the ground gets softer and next thing you know, big iron wheels gets stuck.
And the Bible says that water came and took them away. She doesn’t really say that. No, I just made it up. I thought it sounded good. No. Look what he says here in verse 7. The inhabitants of the village ceased. They ceased in Israel until that I, Deborah, arose. I arose a mother in Israel. In other words, the leaders of Israel ceased. There was no leaders. That’s why God had to use a woman. And then why was this being done?
What was the big problem? In verse 8, they chose new gods. They chose new gods. Israel was wrong. Israel was wicked. And so then you see there in verse 9, my heart is toward the governors of Israel, they offered themselves willingly among the people, blessed ye the Lord, but not everybody. And so you’ll find some verses down through here that talks about the various tribes. And some of the tribes didn’t participate. They just didn’t participate. And in verse 11, they that are delivered from the noise of archers in the places of drawing water.
Where shall they rehearse the righteous acts of the Lord? Even the righteous acts toward the inhabitants of his villages in Israel. Then shall the people of the Lord go down to the gate? See, whenever you are under the iron heel, the highways are not traveled by you. You take the byways. You don’t take the main roads because you are a servant. You’ve been made a slave. They couldn’t even go and get water without people shooting at them. Now Israel is free.
You can go draw water and don’t have to worry about it. You can get in the streets and sing and shout because there was victory. Now God used this woman, but Betty, she is luring the boom upon those tribes that did not participate. And so you have this mentioned down through here. But he says in verse 12, awake, awake, Deborah, awake, awake, utter a song, arise, Barak. So at the very first, when God called, God says, I’m going to use you to deliver the people from the Canaanites.
And she believed it. She believed it. And her and God make some majority. And God wanted to use Barak, but he said, I will if you do. So you see, you are sometimes influenced. And so this is so important down through here. I want you to see this. He died in verse 15. And the princes of Isakar were with Deborah, even Isakar, and also Barak. He was sent on foot into the what? And to the valley. Now down here in the valley, it’s going to rain.
And when it rained, it rained a lot. See up here in verse four where it says, the earth trembled, heavens dropped, the clouds also dropped water, the mountains melted from before the Lord, water coming down into the valley. And here’s all these chariots of iron that gets sunken all the mud. And then she also says, if you’re not here, you’re not here. few things about Reuben down at the bottom in verse 15, for the divisions of Reuben, there were great thoughts of heart.
Should we or should we not? There’s another portion of the Scripture that talks about multitudes and multitudes in the Valley of Decision. Some people just can’t make up their mind. They’re always this side and then that side and they never commit themselves. Thinking about it, praying about it, but never getting anything done. And so says here in verse 16, why a bodice thou among the sheep fold? Do you hear the bleeding of the flock? In other words, the reason you didn’t come, and the reason you didn’t come to help is because they hear the sheep was more enjoyable for you.
Hey, this is a war. This is Israel. You’re part of Israel. supposed to help. If it’s one tribe’s war, it’s all of your war.” And then he says, for the division of Reuben, there were great searchings of heart. Gilead abode beyond Jordan. And why did Dan remain in ships? Asher continued on the seashore and abode in his breeches, which were little creeks and bays where they would keep their sheep. I should say they abode at the beach. You know, some people can’t come to church because they got to go down to the beach.
There’s always a reason why they don’t do what they’re supposed to do. They don’t get in the fight. They’re afraid of getting hurt, afraid of being offended. It might cost them something. And so there’s a lot of people who are just willing to let somebody else carry the fight and we will be there to applaud them. Yay! Have you ever seen a Monday morning quarterback? What’s a Monday morning? morning quarterback. Nobody plays football on Monday morning. Oh yeah they do.
They’re the one that sits there on Monday mornings and meets with everybody and tells you what you should have done. But were they in the arena? No they just sit there in the comfort of their home and watching on TV and they have these cameras that’s up over everybody so they get to see the whole field and wonder why the quarterback can’t see what they see. That dumb nut, you You see what he did? The guy over there was wide open and he throw over here to this guy.
You see, they may not know that there’s this 300 pound guy pounding down on him. And so they don’t get the whole picture. But there’s always somebody that’s ready to criticize everything you do. But if you’re going to stop because of criticism, don’t even start. Don’t play the game. Commit yourself to the Lord and trust the Lord. regardless of whether people are for you or against it, you keep doing right. Even if nobody else does, you do. I do not serve the Lord because Hank Lynch done served the Lord.
And I don’t serve the Lord because, well, you know, Lee Patton served the Lord. Oh, they may encourage me. But me serving the Lord was my decision, whether they rise or whether they fall. I’m served on the Lord because of what God means to me, and that’s the way you have to look at it. But look there in the next verse. He says here in verse 19, the kings came and fought, then fought the kings of Canaan by the waters of Megiddo.
There was no water before. In verse 20, they fought from heaven and stars in their courses fought against him. Remember, they did not profit by all their fighting. To be at war with God is to be at war with all creation because God is able to use all creations of fight against you. And you’d be surprised what God is and can bring into your life to call you defeat. And just because you think, well, I can handle this, I can handle this and you get lifted up with pride and God has a way of showing you can’t handle everything.
God says, if you exalt yourself, he is going to humble you. But if you humble yourself, God will exalt you. So you’ve got to decide which one you want. You want to exalt yourself and you want God to do it for you. You’re better off just submit yourself to the will of God and let God work in your life any way he wants. Now… There’s a verse here in verse 23 that needs to be looked at because some believe this was a city about 12 miles away from Sumerian.
And some believe that this is actually talking about the people that are in this area that didn’t go to the battle. And so an angel of the Lord is upset. Now remember, they’re singing a song. How would you like for them to make up a song, these singing minstrels, to sing it all over the land of Israel? By the way, you didn’t help. La-la-la-la-la, you didn’t help. La-la-la-la, you ran, you coward. Or would you rather them sing how that you joined the fight and you did what you should and have the praise that you should have because you help defend the nation.
So he says in verse 23, cursive, misrah. He says, said the angel of the Lord. Now why would an angel of the Lord be? Because he knows who didn’t go. He knows who didn’t help. You see, there’s a lot of times this thing that the preacher wants to see done. Wouldn’t it be great if everybody just, sure. But is that always the case? Now people got reasons why but that’s between them and the Lord. I’m not trying to challenge overall what people ought to do for the Lord.
But give what he says here. He says, curse e bitterly that inhabitants thereof. Why? Get this, because they came not to the help of the Lord, to the help of the Lord against the mighty.” You see, they were mighty and God wanted His people to work together and some of them would not do that and so He says in verse 24, blessed above women shall jail the wife of Hebrew, the kingite be blessed shall she be above women in the tent.
Here you are a man that was commanding the army of Jabin and he was killed. Hey did you hear it? He was killed by a woman and here’s all the men. You bunch of wimps, you cowards, you had your excuses why you couldn’t do but God used a woman and they had a victory. You know when he says here, blessed above women? You know, some people tell me that, Mary was blessed above women, but it’s not true. And look, it says she was blessed among women.
Here’s a woman that was blessed above women. I’m right, I just tell you what it says here. But as you go down through here, you learn, there’s a reason. See, these details comes in the song. Now we know how they did it and why they lured him to a certain spot with a dry creek bed and then the rain and then the water washing mud and so forth down the mountain because it says it melted the mountain and the water and the mud slides.
I love the seenness. You know, I think sometimes when we get to heaven, God’s going to give us a video and we get a chance to see all these things that happen back there. I mean, we can do it. Surely God could do it. Wouldn’t you like to see some of these things? I like a rerun on creation too, or that would be exciting to see. But as you read these things, always understand these stories in the Old Testament are written to help us to be wiser because we’re no different than these people with a sinful nature.
We are people with a sinful nature and we sometimes repeat over and over and over again the same stupid things you think we would learn and this is why some Christians never grow and mature in the Lord because you see, they have an experience. They have the problem, but they don’t learn from it. They just keep doing the same thing and they don’t grow. And so the Bible says in verse, the last verse of the verse 31, where he says, so let all the enemies perish, O Lord, but let them that love him be as the son when he go with forth in his mind.
And the land had rest 40 years. God bless the woman. God bless both women. God used them both. And all of Israel Got to enjoy 40 years of rest from the Canaanites. And God brought that great victory against a multitude with 900 iron chariots. Look up here. If you’re here tonight or watching by internet, this hand represents you and me and the wallet represents sin. We all have sin upon us. The Bible says that God loves us. Now he hates our sin, but he loves us.
And for us to pay for sin is eternal separation from God in a place called hell. But God loves us once as to go to heaven. And to go to heaven we have to be as righteous as God. And none of us are perfect. None of us are righteous. We’ve all sinned. We’ve all come short of God’s perfection. So the Bible says we cannot save ourselves. ourselves. We are condemned. We are guilty before God. This hand represents Jesus Christ.
He is the Lord God in the flesh. He came into the world because He loves us, hates our sin because it separates us from Him. So Jesus Christ who had no sin did not have to die, but because He loved us, He took all the sin of all the world, paid for them on the cross came back from the dead and said that you and I we would believe that he did it for us. He would put this payment on our account and we get to go to heaven.
All why Jesus Christ did for us. Best news and all that we’re on. Let’s pray, shall we? With his bow nice clothes and no one looking around. Or if you’re watching by internet, listen to me carefully. There is no amount of good work that that you can do to save yourself. I can’t save you. This church can’t save you. No church can. The only one that can save you is Jesus Christ. He’s the Savior of the world. And the way He does that is, see, He went to the cross 2000 years ago to die for you, to pay for your sins.
That means that you don’t have to pay for them if you’ll believe He did it for you. Don’t that make sense? He died to pay for your sins so that you wouldn’t have to pay for them. Now we should, but because of God’s love, grace, it means you don’t earn it, you don’t work for it, you don’t deserve it, but it loves you that much. And God wants you to believe that He did it for you. So if you’ll trust Him as your Savior, God said He would save you and give you eternal life as a free gift.
So if you have never done so, would you do it right now? And I’m going to ask you in the auditorium, if you have never trust the Lord, just to slip you in a very quickly, but rub it down. Does anyone at all? If you’re watching by the internet, right down the screen, there’s a little button that says, yes, I will trust Christ as my Savior. And if you’ll do that, God said He would save you and give you eternal life.
Would you trust Him? Our Father, we thank You so much for all You’ve done for us. Thank You for Your Word, You’ve given us. Help each one of us to know how to apply it in our life. Help us to do right. Bless each one here. In Christ, then we pray. Amen. You’ve been listening to another great message from Dr. Arnold, and we hope that Bibleline is a blessing to you.
