This is Sunday School, and so we’re still supposed to talk about according to our Sunday School lesson about the resurrection of Jesus Christ. So we’ll look at some of the portions of Scripture without trying to put everything in a sequence. Just tell it like it is as it’s recorded there. And if you want to spend all your time panna figure it all out, have fun. But now take your Bible first of all because it’s recorded in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
They all talk about the resurrection of Jesus Christ. And that is the foundation upon Christianity stands. That’s why we believe that what we believe is the truth. If there had been no resurrection, we have nothing to believe, nothing to trust in. But we always want to know is our life after death, well, unless somebody comes back from the dead, you may question that. Jesus Christ is the only person who’s ever come back from the dead according his own power.
He said, I have power to lay it down. Got power to take it up again. A man by the name of Houdini says, if there’s a way back, you can count on him finding it. Well, Houdini has been dead for a long time and he hasn’t come back yet. But one person did. That was Jesus Christ. So Jesus Christ is different from all the other so-called religious leaders, you know, Muhammad and Confu- they’re all dead. They’re all dead. Muhammad, they’re dead.
Jesus is alive. So Matthew chapter 28, Matthew chapter 28, look there in verse 1, where it says, in the end of the Sabbath, as some say in the end of the Sabbath, but as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the Separach. Now there’s different times that they came to the Separach. These two had also followed Joseph of Erimathea when he took the body down and took it to the Separach.
They watched to see what he did and where he was at. They later they left and they came back to see what they could do as far as with the spices and so on. So they’re gonna anoint the body. But he says in verse 2, and behold, there was a great earthquake, for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, came and rolled back the stone from the door and sat upon it. Now they had sealed this door, the Romans had because they were told.
And you know those Christians, they may come back here and try to steal the body, so seal the tomb so that he can’t get out, set guards over it. Well, it didn’t work too well because Jesus came back from the dead. The angels had moved the stone out evidently. The stone did not have to be rolled away in order for Jesus to get out. Why? Because he could go right through the wall. See a little bit later, he appeared into the upper room where they were and the Bible says the doors were locked.
So that means the disciples were scared to death and they were in a locked room and Jesus appears and they’re missed and then disappears. So that lets you know that Jesus could have just walked right out of the tomb. He didn’t have to have a stone rolled away so that others could look in there and see that the body was gone. And so they did look and they did tell the body was gone. Now notice what he says here about this earthquake.
So notice that there is also a thing about an earthquake. Look at verse 51 of chapter 27. But here in verse 51, notice when Christ died on the cross, behold the veil of the temple was rent in two, from the top to the bottom, and the earth did quake and the rocks rent. And the graves were opened, many bodies of the saints which slept arose and came out of the graves after his resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared on the many.
Now exactly at what point this earthquake took place. It says there’s one that took place here, and then there’s one that took place over there when he was going to come back from the dead. Now, it’s possible that maybe it’s the same earthquake, and it’s just telling you that this happened but not telling you exactly when it took place because they didn’t come out of the grave until after its resurrection. Can you imagine what it would have been like to have buried, you know, Aunt Susie six months ago and all of a sudden she’s come back from the dead also and she’s walking around.
See, Jesus wasn’t the only one. It says that many bodies of the saints would slip arose. There was others who was also resurrected because Jesus says, I am the resurrection and the life. And that’s what he told Mary and Martha concerning Lazarus. And she says, oh, I know in the resurrection that’s going to hate that I am. I mean, I can do it now if I want to. he did, he raised up Lazarus from the dead. And so there was others who came back from the dead at this time too.
And the Bible makes the statement in the book of Ephesians in chapter 4, where it says, before he ascended, what is it that he first descended into the Lord parts of the earth and led captivity? Captain and took those people. They were resurrected and took them to heaven. So we believe the Old Testament saints are up there, not down there. And so it’s interesting when you try to, when you try to put all these things together and the scripture does not convict.
It’s just that we don’t have good understanding of everything. We can’t always fathom everything that he God said, but what he says is still the truth. So you notice what he says here that he in verse three his countenance was like lightning and his raiment whitest know. Talk about the angel that went over there and sat on the stone. And verse 4, and for fear of him, the keepers did shape and become his dead men, them must have fainted fast away.
Those that were guarding the tomb. And remember, they said later, just say that you fell asleep and that they came and stole the body. But you know, usually if a Roman guard falls asleep on the job, but they had to come up with some kind of a story because here they are, the body has no longer there and the guards are like passed out. They’re like they’re dead. And so he says in verse 5, and the angel answered and said unto the women, fear not ye, for I know that you seek Christ, Jesus, which was crucified.
And here’s one of the best verses in the Bible. You ought to underline verse 6 in your Bible. What does it say? He is not here, for he is risen as he said, come see the place where the Lord laid. So they went to see where he was laying in lo and behold, they saw a napkin folded, they saw the the linen and so forth as though it probably looked like he just came right out of that without disturbing it.
Wouldn’t that be scary? Now you say, what about this year’s shroud of Turin? You know, everybody heard about that? You know, Catholics talk about it. I don’t know if that’s true or not. I haven’t seen it. I don’t know anything about it. I just, I can’t disbelieve it because it possible it could be. I don’t care. But I don’t need that as my proof. I believe Jesus came back from the dead and that’s all the proof that I need.
And one of the greatest reasons that I know that all of this is good and real and true to me. And that is that when I consider my own life, when I trusted Christ as my Savior, I can’t explain it all, but something happened to me. He gave me eternal life. I became His child. And the whole course of my life for 55 years has been changed. He is more real to me than the clothes I got on my back.
I do believe. Jesus Christ is alive. And I believe He’s real, as real as real can be. So I hope that He is also real to you. But now they were supposed to go and tell the other disciples, so look in verse 7, go quickly tell His disciples that He has risen from the dead. And behold, He goeth before you into Galilee. There shall you see Him. Lo, I have told you. . . . . . . . .
. And they departed quickly from the Separchia with fear and great joy. Fear and great joy. And it says, and did run to bring his disciples word. And as they went to tell his disciples, behold Jesus met them say in all hell. And they came and held him by the feet and worshiped him. And then said, Jesus unto them, be not afraid. Go tell my brethren that they are not. go into Galilee and there shall they see me. So this is Matthew’s account.
Now take your Bible and turn to the book of Mark, the book of Mark and chapter 15. Now the several ladies that are mentioned in here, they followed Joseph that asked for the body of Jesus from pilot and they wanted to know has he been dead for a while and they yes so they allowed him to take the body. So wherever the crucifixion was there was a garden nearby and a seperica where nobody had ever been laid before. So evidently Joseph of Arimathea was a fairly rich individual and I have been there to Mount Moriah where they have a skull that looks just like a skull.
They talk about Golgotha, the face of a skull and it looks just like a skull. At the foot of that mountain is a bus terminal, believe it or not. There’s also a beautiful garden there and there is a tomb and they call it Gordon’s Calvary because they believe this is where Jesus was really buried, not at the other place where some people like to do it and think that the Roman Catholic thing. I believe it’s right where the Bible describes it.
Anyway, here in the book of Mark, you’ll notice in verse 39, the centurion makes a wonderful statement which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out and gave up the ghost and he said, truly this man was the Son of God. I mentioned this the other the day to somebody. That John Wayne said this in a movie. Truly this was the son of God and I’m evidently not many people remember seeing him do that. But my daughter contacted me and she says it was John Wayne and it was in the movie and she gave me the name of it and I don’t remember it now.
So anyway we know what happened because John Wayne said so well not because of John Wayne. But look at verse 40. And there were also women looking on a far off, among whom was Mary Magdalene and married the mother of James and the less and of Joseph and Salom, who also when he was in Galilee followed him and ministered unto him. Many other women which came up with him on the Galilee. So there was a bunch of them, but they’re just certain ones that are named.
So when Jesus had his ministry and Galilee is up there to see of Galilee, it’s pretty good ways up from Jerusalem. So they had a good long walk unless they took the train, but then they could have caught a bus. Maybe they walked or over a donkey. I don’t know if they wrote many camels there, but it makes a statement here in verse 42. And now when the evening was come, because it was the preparation that is the day before the Sabbath, Joseph’s of Aramathaeum, an honorable counselor which also waited for the kingdom of God, came and went in boldly unto Pilate and craved the body of Jesus.
Now this verse talks about it, he begged for the body. Pilate marveled if he were already dead and calling to him the centurion he asked him whether he had been in you while dead. And when he knew it of the centurion he gave the body to Joseph. And he brought, but fine Lenin and took him down, wrapped him into Lenin and laid him in a sepprica, which was hewed out of a rock and rolled his stone upon the door of the sepprica.
And this is why there’s a possibility that later on, whether at the same time, and doesn’t mention it, Nicodemus also came and bought about a hundred pounds of oilmen to also do the same thing and says that they both did it. So if this was temporary, then a little bit later they both were together but it’s not as important as Jesus died, paid for our sins, was buried, came back from the dead and that’s what’s important and that was a finished work.
So you look what he says here in verse 40 and he brought fine linen. Then in verse 40 and Mary Magdalene married the mother of Joseph, it’s beheld where he was laid because later on they were coming back to. Put some ointment on him also in sweet spice and so forth into anointing. So look there in verse 1 of chapter 16 When the Sabbath was passed now this Sabbath here is the Saturday Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother says they bought sweet spice That they might come and anoint him now if they bought it It wouldn’t have been in the middle of the night because they were already well like say they came very early in the morning the Bible talks about it was still dark and they couldn’t have bought it on a Saturday because that was the day of rest unless they did it on a
Friday but then if he had died on that Friday at six o’clock they didn’t have time to do it before the six o’clock deadline which they can’t do anything to him go anywhere and they can’t buy anything so they had to do it on a day that that did not count so that’s why if you were here last night you have a little bit better understanding on that. But now notice, it says in verse 2, and the very early in the morning, the first day of the week, which would be a Sunday, they came unto the Separata at the rising of the sun.
So this is when they came there. Doesn’t necessarily mean this is when Jesus was resurrected because I believe as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, That means the first day of the week started on a Saturday night at six o’clock. Here is the rising of the sun, so you know this is in the morning. The other one is in the evening, and I believe that’s when Jesus came back again from the dead. So you notice they asked the statement in verse 3, and they said among themselves, who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sapprakra?
Because how are they going to get in? Now whether or not did they know that it had been sealed, I don’t know. And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away, or it was very great. And entering into the Separachal, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, sitting in a clothing of long white garden, and they were afraid. And he said unto them, Be not afraid, don’t be afraid. Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified.
it is again. He is risen. He is not here. Behold the place where they laid him. Now pretty much what we just read over there in the book of Matthew. But go your way. Tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee. There shall ye see him as he said unto you. And they went out quickly and fled from the Separach up for they trembled and were amazed. said they anything to any man, for they were afraid.
Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, the first day of the week would be a Sunday. But early would have been not the day when they came, it was already dark, the stones already been rolling, but early when that day began, which would have been late Saturday night. Now notice what he says, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene out of whom he had cast seven devils. And she He went and told them that they had been with Him and it says as they mourned and wept.
Now you’re talking about people that are very, you know, they’re beside themselves. They’ve seen Jesus crucified and now He’s risen from the dead and some are having a hard time believing all that. You see if man had wrote this, come up with a, you know, you’re going to write a book, they would have never put all this stuff in there. Everybody was happy and everything was wonderful and everybody believed. But they put in here all the negative two that was going on.
How they thought, how they felt about all of this, that they didn’t even believe it. And how that Jesus rebuked him for their unbelief, for not believing what he told them. You see, if you and I were going to write a story like that, we were never had, you know, all the things that took place. This is the most awesome story in all the world. You notice that people for money are coming out with these movies on the Bible, and they don’t stay true to the book.
I watched the other night, because it was on a little bit late night, got over there and was over in Orman Beach area, and had a part on there about killing Jesus. Anybody see any of that there? Killing Jesus. It was written by O’Reilly. I watched that, you know what? They missed the point. The whole point of why Christ came and died and came back from it, nothing’s there. They missed the point. They just make a good movie because they can make money off of it.
But the story is not true to what the scripture says. They don’t get in there and tell them how, you know, the reason he’s doing this is to pay for the sins of the world so they can have the free gift of everlasting life. I thought, man, let me write the thing. I put the gospel in there. Believe it or not, I would even have, you know, Peter doing the wall a little treasure. Make the gospel clear. But the souls is not their, it’s to promote their religion and then try to then, and Peter went to Rome.
There is no evidence Peter ever went to Rome. You can watch the movie called The Passion that was done by Mel Gibson. He made $700 million, million dollars I think that thing took in. That’s quite a better change, ain’t it? And yet to the whole movie, even though we come back from the dead, why? They didn’t say why, but what did he die for? What did they kill him? Just but why? They missed the point. It’s not in there.
If you were lost, you’d go and you still walk away lost because they don’t give the gospel. The gospel is the good news. Why he did all of that? Burns me up, makes me mad. And I’m a preacher. What’s that? Yeah, and they both promote the Catholic Church. By the time you get to ask what it’s all about. But anyway, I did like the one picture that I saw that had a picture of the devil. They said it looked it looked just like Obama.
Anybody see that? It looked just like And it’s like he posed for the picture. I don’t know if it was on purpose or what. But anyway, life do get interested in times. But now notice here’s Jesus from the dead. He’s risen and says that and she went out and told them that had been with him and they mourned and they went. We said they should be excited, but notice. and they when they had heard that he was alive and had been seen of her, what’s the next two words?
What does it say? They believe not. They didn’t believe it. They just don’t believe it. It’s just like in the book of Acts when it says that Peter was in prison so the church was together and they were praying for Peter. And Peter’s at the door knocking. Go see who’s at the door. It’s Peter. it is not. Keep praying y’all. They’re praying for Peter to get out of prison when Peter’s at the door. Can’t believe God answered their prayer and here they are and they don’t believe the story.
These are the leaders. These are the ones that Christ spent three and a half years and they had one final exam and they blew it. And these are the guys that are going to turn the world upside down? Think something’s wrong with this plan. It seemed like everything came crashing down around them. They thought he’s going to set up the kingdom and they’re going to rule and reign and everything’s going to be wonderful and everything fell apart. Or did it.
Notice what he says here. In verse 12, after that he appeared in another form under two of them as they walked and went into the country. He appeared in another form. You talk about people trying to make a movie. This was written 2,000 years ago to take up on another form and you can walk through walls. He can appear and disappear. This is mentioned in the book of Luke chapter 24 and it says that these two guys were walking along very disappointed, very down and discouraged, talking about what had happened and how miserable they were.
And their countenance was sad. And all of a sudden Jesus comes walking along with them and they’re walking. And as they walked, they said, have you heard what’s happening in Jerusalem? He says, Jesus says, what things? Like, what? Oh, we thought that He was the Messiah. We thought He was the one we were looking for. And now He’s been crucified for us. We thought He was the one. And Jesus says, oh, fools and slow of heart to believe. All that the prophets have declared unto you.
And so he began to explain to them the Scriptures. And then they, he acted like he was going to go someplace else and they was going to go to their home. He said, come and eat with us. So they compelled him. And then while they were sitting there, he prayed. And when he prayed, they realized who he was. And then the Bible says he disappeared, vanished out of their sight. Now that would be awesome. Wouldn’t that be awesome? To see somebody just appear, disappear?
He could take them up on another form and they didn’t recognize him. This book is just loaded with all kind of good stuff. This is why people who want to make money, they try to copy the stories into Bible. Some of the greatest 10 commandments, have you ever heard of them? The robe? Some of the other greatest stories you ever told? The passion? You know, all these things? Just because it’s the Bible.
The Bible has the best. Look what he says there now in verse 13. And they went and told it unto the residue, neither believed they, them. They went and told him, and they wouldn’t believe it. Man, I’ll tell you, some people are just playing hard-headed. Looking for verse 14, afterwards he appeared unto the 11 as SERVICE meet and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen because they didn’t believe the ones that he told to go tell them and they wouldn’t believe that.
And so he’s raking them over to Coles. This is the Lord. I thinkpite this is awesome. Now take a Bible looking to book a Luke, the book of Luke chapter 24. Luke chapter 24, here’s these two fellows walking along mind in their own business and then this is something that takes place. But just very quickly, look in chapter 24, verse 1. See there in verse 1, now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepprica, bringing the spices which they had prepared in certain others with them.
And they found the stone rolled away from the sepprica, and they entered in, found not the body of the Lord Jesus. And he came to pass as they were much perplexed there about, Behold two men stood by them and shining garments, and as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen. Remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee, saying the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men.
He crucified and the third day rise again, and they remembered His words. And returned from the Separachae and told all these things unto the eleven and to all the rest. It was Mary Magdalene and Joanna, and Mary, the mother of James, and other women that were with them which told these things unto the apostles. And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not. That’s why Jesus was upset with them.
