Today I want to talk to you about the blood of the everlasting covenant why we do communion service and is this because of a covenant that has been made? I think that you’ll see that in just a moment. But to start off with I want you to take your Bible and turn with me to the book of Hebrews, the book of Hebrews chapter 6, Hebrews chapter 6. I will be making certain statements a little bit later, but I want you to know where some of them are coming from.
In chapter 6 and verse 13, but here in verse 13, he says, for when God made promise to Abraham, because he swear by no greater he swear by himself. Now you and I know that whenever you make a deal with somebody you can can either shake their hand or you can sign a note or with the Lord he couldn’t swear by anything higher than him because there was nothing higher than him. So he swore by himself. Now you and I swear on my dead mother’s grave, I don’t know how that’s supposed to mean you think but you know you you would never lie on your dead mother’s grave.
I swear on my mother’s Bible it’s always the mothers. He says when I could swear by none greater, he swore by himself. Saying, surely blessing, I will bless thee and multiply and I will multiply thee. This is what he said to Abraham years ago, back into the book of Genesis. And then down in verse 17, he says, we’re in God willing more abundantly to show unto the heirs up promise the immutability of his counsel confirmed it by So he made a covenant that was a blood covenant that he did later.
And I want to show that to you, which is found in the book of Genesis in chapter 15. We’ll be going there later. But remember this. He says in verse 18, that by two immutable things in which it was impossible for God to lie, we may have a strong consolation who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us. So this is the anchor within the veil. We are anchored to something that cannot be moved.
Based upon a covenant that cannot be changed. You see, there are two kinds of covenants, and it’s right during your notes there. The biblical covenant is an agreement that God made with man. Sometimes there is a conditional covenant, and sometimes an unconditional covenant. If God makes an unconditional covenant, it means that God’s the one responsible to keep it. If it’s a conditional covenant, it means that two parties are involved, and both of you have to keep your part of the agreement.
So both of these kinds are found in the Word of God. Now, I want you to take your Bible and turn to the book of Luke chapter 22, the Gospel of Luke chapter 22. In Luke chapter 22, you’ll notice there in verse 19, and he took bread and gave thanks, break it, gave unto them saying, this is my body which is given for you, this do in remembrance of me. If there is no leaven in the body, No sin in the body.
No fermentation in the body. There can be no fermentation in the blood. And therefore I do not believe that there is fermentation in the grape juice that we’re supposed to drink. Now I know it might feel better. You may like it better, but we do it without fermentation. I don’t believe Jesus drank it. But that’s another story. Look what he says down in verse 20. Likewise, also the cup after supper, saying this cup is the new Testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
Where it has the new Testament, it means it’s a new covenant. It’s a new covenant. This is what we call the blood of the everlasting covenant that God made based upon his son, Jesus Christ, shedding his blood. There’s something about that that’s eternal. It’s an everlasting covenant. And that means it has to be based upon not two parties but one party. It means it has to be an unconditional covenant that God made. So now take your Bible and turn back to the book of Genesis in chapter 12.
Genesis chapter 12. Now we’re going to take a look at the Abrahamic covenant. Now some also believe in a no way a covenant which is no problem with that or the Adamic covenant which was made with Adam and Eve that was conditional. Don’t do this. They did it and they’re out. And so there’s things that God has said in his word and sometimes these covenants are based upon a promise that God made. But God wanted to confirm that covenant, so He did more than make a promise.
He sealed it in blood. And blood is an important thing to remember in the scriptures because from the beginning to the end it’s about blood. And we preached a sermon on that sometime back, but not at this time. Now look there in verse 1, Genesis chapter 12. Now the Lord had said into Abram, get the out of thy country and from thy kindred and from thy father’s house unto and land that I will show thee. And I will make of thee a great nation and I will bless thee and make thy name great and thou shall be a blessing and I will bless them that blessed thee, cursed them that cursed thee and indeed shall all families of the earth be blessed.”
Now this is a covenant that God made with Abraham. Abraham didn’t have to promise anything. It wasn’t based upon Abraham. God made the promise of what he was going to do. So it’s based upon his word and that’s what we read over there in the book of Hebrews in chapter 6 when God made that promise to Abraham and God cannot lie. So he made a promised to Abraham and then he confirmed it later. But look there in your notes where you’ll see three words that are in bold.
One is land, one is seed, one is blessing. Number one, the promise. Now the Lord had said unto Abraham, get the out of thy country and from thy kindred, from thy father’s house unto a land that I will show thee. So God had promised Abraham, there’s a certain piece of territory, some land, somewhere, Abraham had no clue where it was. But God knew, and God led him, and he had to follow the leading of the Lord, and he got to the landing, and he told him, he says, every place your foot will tread upon, and he said, I’ve given it to you.
From the river Euphrates all the way up to the another little river on up the road Darren and he told him, he says, all that land belongs to you. And yet he got, he didn’t get a chance to really enjoy it too much as a, you know, a father with a kingdom and all that, but he did live to be 175 years old. God made the promise to him when he was only 75. And then when he was 100 years old, he had a son.
And then the next statement, And I will make of thee a great nation and will bless thee and make thy name great, and thou shalt be a blessing.” That’s the seed that’s going to come from him through Abraham and Isaac and Jacob. Therefore, you’re going to have this nation. It’s a promise. And it was based upon God keeping his word and what he was going to do. Abraham was already an old man, but God had made a promise. And God was going to keep that promise.
And he says that through thy seed, which we know that on down the line was a reference to Jesus Christ and because of Jesus Christ, all the families of the earth would be blessed. And the Bible says that Jesus Christ came into the world that God the Father might fulfill the promise that He made to Abraham, saying, in these shall all the families of the earth be blessed so that people can hear and understand and have the truth of the gospel.
And this blessing is this. Salvation, where God had made theventus, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In these shall all families of the earth be blessed, and that the heathen would be justified by faith. People would be saved justified by faith. Along the line, along this way, in this, doing this period of time, God gave another covenant of law, and He gave another covenant to David, and He gave another covenant, which was the new covenant about grace. All four of those covenants are very, very important.
And even to this day, we celebrate the Lord’s Supper. Because it’s the blood of the everlasting covenant that God had made. So take your Bible and turn to the book of Genesis in chapter 15. This is where he confirmed that covenant or that promise with a covenant that he made with Abraham. And you’ll notice there in verse 5, and he brought him, forth abroad, and says, look now toward heaven. Tell the stars account them, if thou be able to number them.
And he says unto him, so shall thy seed be. Now we know there’s a verse later on in the book of Luke that talks about, in the increase of thy kingdom shall be no end. And here he’s talking about, so shall thy seed be. In it’s singular, it’s a reference to Jesus Christ. Looking, verse six, and he believed in the Lord and he counted to him for righteousness. Now Abraham wanted a little evidence. Lord, what are you gonna do that I can know you’re really gonna do all of this?
I mean you’re saying this, but give me a sign. So he says there in verse seven, and he said to him, I am the Lord that brought the out of the earl of the cow, these to give this land to inherit him. And he said, Lord, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it? How am I supposed to know? So he told him in verse nine, take me on heifer of three years old, in a she goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtle dove and a young pigeon, and he took them all these and divided them in the mist laid each piece, one against another, but the birds divided He not.
The foul came down and Abraham drove him away. And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram, and a horror of great darkness fell upon him. And he said unto Abram, No of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them, and shall afflict them four hundred years. And also that nation whom they shall serve.” Well, I judge. And afterwards they shall come out with great substance, but thou shalt go to be with thy fathers in peace and thou shalt be buried in a good old age.
And there’s going to be four generations. And then down in verse 17, very important, it came to pass that when the sun went down and it was dark, behold, a smoke infernus and a burning lamb that you ought to underline. This little statement passed between those pieces. See, they divided them and then they would walk through them. And if both people were making an agreement, they both would walk through. But Abraham didn’t walk through, only God, God passed between them.
And from what we can understand by what was going on even in the tabernacles and sacrifices, then they smoke into fire, consumed these animals, the carcasses that were there. So Abraham knew God had spoke it and God had given his word. God gave his word. Can Abraham believe God? Abraham, the Bible says, believe God and it was kind of the hymn for righteousness. So this covenant was made. God must fulfill his will. That’s why even to this day, there are many people that don’t believe that God meant what he said and that the nation of Israel is going to be destroyed and some people even try to say that America is Israel.
America is not Israel. There is a place a land that God gave and He says that that will be there forever it will be theirs. And Israel will be a people and Israel will be a nation just like God said just like God promised. Or you can take your Bible and throw it in the trash. This book means what it says. Now Now this means the legal covenant signed now in blood. A covenant was made, but it was conditional only upon God keeping his word.
Abraham didn’t promise anything. It’s not based upon him promising anything. He doesn’t have to keep me. This is what God is going to do. So God has given us a purpose of what’s going to happen in this world down the road from the time that he gave this. . . . . . . . . Now, take your Bible and turn to the book of Jeremiah. I want you to look in Jeremiah chapter 34. So Jeremiah chapter 34 and you look there in verse 18, just two verses I want you to see.
Because you see there was the mosaic law, the covenant, God made with Moses. And this was 400 years later, God made a covenant with Moses. And so he says here in verse 18, And I will give the men that have transgressed my covenant, which have not performed the words of the covenant, which they have made before me. When they cut the calf in twain and passed between the parts thereof, the princes of Judah and the princes of Jerusalem, the unison, the priests and all the people of the land, which passed between the parts of the calf.
In other words, they made an agreement. They made a covenant with God. So the Mosaic law, the covenant that God made with Moses, was conditional. And it based upon not only God keeping his word, but the people keeping their word. So they both, animals are slain. They pass between them. That means that, let this happen to me, If I break my word, you know, wouldn’t it be needed for a husband and a wife made a covenant like that? But you know, when we make a covenant today, we get married.
It’s until I don’t like them no more, or I don’t want her no more. It’s not a covenant unto, what’s that word? Death. Covenant unto death. But we don’t have people on of that anymore. But in this day, God said, we made a covenant. We made an agreement. So I want you to take your Bible and look in the book of Exodus in chapter 19. Exodus and chapter 19. Exodus chapter 19 and look in verse 3. Exodus 19 verse 3, this is on page 93 in a church Bible.
And verse three says this, and Moses went up unto God and the Lord called unto him out of the mountain saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel, ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bear you on eagle’s wings and brought you unto myself. two Mount Sinai brought him to the mountain Moses claims the mountain God gave him the law in verse five now therefore if ye will obey my voice indeed see that word if you ought to circle it and keep my covenant so this was a conditional covenant it means it’s not just one-sided it means both parties agree into this.
If you will obey my voice indeed and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people, for all the earth is mine, and ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priest and a holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.” So Moses came and called for the elders of this people, laid before their faces all these words which the Lord commanded him. And all the people answered together and said, all that the Lord had spoken, we will do.
And Moses returned the words to stop the people under the Lord. So did they agree to the covenant? Now when we read over there in the book of Jeremiah, they broke their covenant. They did not keep their word. This is why they were cast out of the land because they broke their covenant and they were into captivity in the Babylon. They lost their city, they lost their temple, they lost the walls around the city of Jerusalem and they scattered and so many were killed.
All that because they broke their word, they did not keep their word. It was conditional upon, And that’s why the law was given. Now remember this, when God gave the law, there was the moral law, which we call the 10 commandments. There’s the civil law and how they lived. And then there was also the priestly laws that they were given, the ceremonial laws by which they governed themselves religiously. So there was a political and religious and the moral code that God given, and they broke all the laws.
They broke the word of God. They did not keep the covenant. So God was justified in the chastisement that came upon him because he said, if you break this covenant. I am free to whoop the tar out of you. He says, if you want the blessings or the curses, it’s based upon whether you obey or you disobey. It was their choice. And of course, as we know, they made some bad choices. So in chapter 20, He gives them the law that we call the Ten Commandments, and they broke the law.
They did not honor them, as God says. Now look their in your notes unto the Mosaic Covenant. Conditional stipulations for blessing on Israel. This is not on how to go to heaven. But the Word of God, in giving us this covenant of law, lets us see that if man cannot even keep these laws, there was no law given by which if you kept it, you would have eternal life. That’s found in the book of Galatians in chapter 3. For if there had been a law given that could have given life, very righteousness should have been by the law, but nobody’s ever kept the law.
So for 1500 years, God showed that man, no man, can live good enough to keep all of God’s law. What it does is shows you that the reason God made that promise to Abraham in another covenant, Abraham had covenant, was that he would justify by a man by faith alone. And he promised that’s what he would do. The law proved that man cannot save himself because God made it conditional. You do this, I’ll do this. So the law was something you had to perform.
So today it is a shame and a disgrace for people that try to think for a moment, such arrogance that they can earn their way to heaven by keeping the law. When God gave a whole nation an opportunity are 1500 years and they couldn’t do it. Do you think you’re going to keep that law perfectly? And if you fail, what do you offer as a sacrifice? Forget Christ. You don’t want Him or then where’s your sacrifice for your failures?
What is that innocent animal that’s been sacrificed to cover for your sins? Aren’t you glad we’re not under the law? That covenant was broken. needing to be something better. So there has to be something better. Now you’ll notice in your notes right there, he says in verse number one, now therefore if ye will obey my voice indeed and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure. You’ll be a treasure. Number two, ye shall be enemy a kingdom of priest and a holy nation.
But see they blew all of this. They didn’t do what God says do. And so God has had to chasing them, kicking them out of the land for 2,000 years. And now they’re back in the land, but in unbelief. They’re not right with the Lord, but one day it will take place. Now, the next verse I have there, number three, now therefore why tempt ye God to put a yoke up on the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers, nor we were able to bear.
You see, there were people who were trying to take the new believers in Christ and put them under the law, and this was in the first century there of Christ. Christ has been gone to heaven, and right off the bat, people were trying to put the new believers under the law. And so he says, why are we trying to put a yoke of iron upon their neck, which we were not even able to keep? The Jews didn’t keep them.
Why are we trying to make Gentiles try to keep the law when nobody could keep it. We failed, so nobody has ever lived good enough to earn eternal life. Number four, but we believe that through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, we shall be saved even as they. Nobody has ever been saved any other way than through grace and grace alone. But now notice there’s something else. Down at the bottom, the Davidic covenant, an unconditional promise of an eternal political rule of a descendant of David to reign upon the throne of Israel.
So turning your Bible to second Samuel, second Samuel and chapter seven, second Samuel. Now this is what God did and he made a promise to David. Wasn’t anything that David had to do to make this thing happen? This is this is what God said He was going to do. You say, why is that important? It didn’t matter. David committed adultery. David committed murder. And it could not and did not change the unconditional covenant that God had made. When it’s two-party, then everything can change.
But if it’s based upon what God says it can not be broken except only by God. Now notice what He makes the statement here in the book of 2 Samuel chapter 7. Look there in verse 10. And notice these words, I will, I will, I will, I will. Moreover, I will appoint a place for my people. Israel and will plant them that they may dwell in a place of their own and move no more. Neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them anymore as before time.
In other words, God says, I got a plan. And in the future, he says Israel is going to have the other time of its own place and nobody is going to bother them anymore. Well, evidently that hasn’t been the case for the last three thousand years because it’s been two thousand years since Christ. and David’s about a thousand years before Christ. 3,000 years has passed, but God made a promise, but he made it according to his own will. Look what he says.
He says in verse 11, and as since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel and have caused thee to rest from all thy enemies, also the Lord telleth thee that he will make thee a house. And when thy days are fulfilled and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers.” In other words, that’s nice way of telling David, you’re going to die. He says, and you ought to underline this, I will set up thy seed after thee which shall proceed out of thy bowels and I will establish his kingdom.
He shall build a house for my name and I will establish the throne of his kingdom and you ought to underline that little statement forever. God says, this is what I am going to do. He shall build a house for my name. So we’re not talking about just up until Solomon, which was a very next person in line. This is going beyond Solomon because Christ says in the book of Acts, when He comes back, He said, I will set up and I will build my kingdom.
Christ is going to do that. And He’s going to settle in the throne and he’s going to rule and reign for a week, a year, how long? Forever. And that’s why he’s called the son of David. He’s from David’s loins. Now get what he says here. In verse 13, he shall build a house for my name and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his father and he shall be my son. Get this little word.
He committed iniquity. I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the stripes of the children of men, that there’s a lot of people that were ruling in between and all the way up and so forth. But I believe there’s more here than meets the eye in verse 5, but my mercy shall not depart from him.” In other words, God is basing everything upon his promise, his covenant, his will. And if the person, the King if he does wrong.
It will not know my covenant. What I’m promising what’s going to take place is not based upon his performance. So even if the Son of God would do something wrong God says I’m not changing my gold my will will be performed.
