I want you to take your Bible and turn to the book of 1 Thessalonians, chapter 2, 1 Thessalonians, chapter 2. the subject and remembrance of the last Passover, where Christ was there and it says concerning Jesus Christ, the last night in which He was betrayed. Every month when we do our communion service we often talk about, everything but one phrase, we’ve never talked about this one phrase. And so far I have done a communion service every month for almost eight years.
And I’ve never covered this one phrase. So guess what I’m going to do today? No, I’m not. Yes, I am. I’m going to cover this one little phrase about the night in which he was betrayed, the night in which he was betrayed. In 1 Thessalonians chapter 2 and verse 4 it says this, verse 4 says, but as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel. Even so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God which triath our hearts.
But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel. You see, if you know the gospel, the gospel is the good news on how to go to heaven. If you know how to go to heaven, then you are entrusted and tell that to somebody else so they can know how to go to heaven. It’s the most powerful knowledge in all the world on how to go to heaven. That’s what makes it good news. So God has entrusted us with this wonderful message.
And so therefore, have we betrayed God’s trust? God trusted me with a message. I first heard this message when I was 18. Now I don’t know how old you you were when you first heard the gospel of Jesus Christ and you were entrusted with this message. And God says to go in all the world and preach the gospel so some way we should go into all the world. It might be where you were, it might be your neighbor, it might be in church, it might be through missionary support, through evangelist, through mission.
Whatever every Christian needs to have a way in which he is fulfilling his trust, God is trusting you. Did he bestow that trust upon you in vain? If you don’t live from that, then you live in vain. Your life is in vain. Now I want to show you something today about the man that betrayed the Lord. There’s some wonderful statements that I want to share with you. They’re not really wonderful, but they’re statements that were made that everyone needs to think about.
So I want you to take your notes and just look there in your notes there at the first scripture, Exodus chapter 12 verse 12. We talk about the Passover. We call it today the communion service, the Lord’s service. But it goes all the way back to the time there in Egypt. When God was going to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt. And so on that last night, they didn’t have time to fix everything. He says, make some bread, but it’s leaven bread, no yeast in it.
So it didn’t have time to rise because you’re going to be leaving in a hurry. You’re going to get out of here in a hurry. But he says there is going to be death and death is going to pass through the whole land. And whoever has a first son, the first son was going to be killed. But he says this lamb or a lamb would be provided and you put the blood upon the door post and up on the lentil and…
Therefore, when the destroyer comes through and he says, when I see the blood, I will pass over you. You’ll be safe and your firstborn won’t die. So that’s why we still call it the Passover. When Jesus was here, it was the Passover. So when I see the blood, I will pass over. Now, all of us are sinners and we all need to die because we’ve all sinned against a holy God. So what the Lord says is, when I see the blood that was slain by the Lamb of God applied to you, then I will pass over you.
You have been given eternal life and you will not spend an eternity separated from God and help. So when I trusted Christ as my Savior, the blood of Christ. He shed his blood. It was accounted unto me. And so therefore when he sees the blood applied to me, Yankee Arnold, then I have eternal life and say I will not have this eternal separation from God. The old physical body, yeah, it’ll die one of these days, but me, I will live with the Lord for all eternity.
Now in verse 12, he says, for I will pass to the land of Egypt this night and will might all the firstborn of the land of Egypt, both men and beasts, and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment. I am the Lord. And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where you are. When I see the blood I will pass over you. And the place shall not be upon you to destroy you when I smite the land of Egypt.
And this day shall be unto you for a memorial. And ye shall keep it a feast to the Lord throughout your generations, you shall keep it a feast by an ordinance forever.” So by the time Jesus Christ came here, they were still celebrating the memorial service, this feast of unleavened bread, this Passover. So it was still going on because when Jesus was here, he attended a Passover. Now I want you to take your Bible and turn to the book of Matthew chapter 26.
Matthew chapter 26. But I want you to get what the Bible says about this because sometimes we just so quickly just have communion and say a few things and it’s over. But I wanted to give you a little bit more in-depth study on this. In the book of Matthew in chapter 26, we’re just looking at verse 1. Verse 1 says, and it came to pass when Jesus had finished all these saves. He said unto His disciples, ye know that after two days is the feast of the Passover, and the Son of Man is betrayed to be crucified.
Now he could have just said, and the Son of Man will be crucified, but it says, is betrayed, is going to be crucified. Jesus Christ was betrayed by a person that he trusted. He said, well, man, he was God, he knew, yeah, he knew, but he trusted him. God knows each and every one of us, but he still trust us. He trusts us. He has given the most powerful message in all the world into our care. This is the treasure that’s in urban vessels.
And these physical bodies that we have, we’re not super people, we don’t walk on water, and we don’t perform miracles, but we have the most powerful message in the world that can keep a man out of hell and get him to heaven, where a man can be justified by faith. I’m so glad that I can tell people, look, you don’t have to go to church to go to heaven. They go, you don’t. You don’t have to give any money to go to heaven.
But if you’re going to do it, might as well do it here. Enough. Because eternal life is the gift of God. It’s not a word. Not because you deserve it. He says, or by grace are you saved through faith that not of yourself, it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast. God doesn’t save anybody because of how they live. Always understand that. How you live does not determine your destination. Your destination is only because did you believe on Jesus Christ?
Did you trust him as your savior? If you do, then he gives you eternal life and you get to go to heaven when you die. I was always under the impression, And if I was good, I’d go to heaven, bad, I’m going to hell. I’d feel well if I’m going to go to hell, might as well have me a ball for a guy in there. So I had mixed emotions. Some days I’d want to be good, and some days I’d be bad.
But I know you’ve never seen me be bad, but just try to imagine it, you know, it’d be hard, but it’d be an imagine. Everyone, believe it or not, has sinned against God. Now look what he says there in verse 14. Verse 14, one of the 12 called Judas’ carrier, went unto the chief priest and said unto them, what will you give me? And I will deliver him unto you.” Now here is Judas, one of the 12. He had been with Jesus for three and a half years.
He’d walked with them. He saw him. He saw the miracles. How much closer could you get to God himself? Jesus is God. Now, when I left Florida Bible College, there’s another guy that was there. His name was Robert Rome. And we were going to be evangelists and go save the world. Well, we haven’t done too good since then, but he says, Yankee, I can’t wait to get out there and preach the sermon as though he only had one sermon.
He was going to preach. I said, what’s that one sermon? He says, I’m going to preach the sermon, the man that kissed the door of heaven and went to hell. I said, what? He says, the man that kissed the door of heaven and went to hell. I says, you talk about Judas? He said, yeah, remember Jesus is on the door and he kissed the door of heaven and he went to hell. All right, that’s a good sermon. Would you believe that years after that, I preached a sermon in Colorado.
the man that kissed the door of heaven and went to hell. Boy, it was a good sermon, soul’s turned. But I’m not trying to make this a glamorous thing, because what Judas did was a wicked thing, a sinful thing. Look what he says. And those little words you ought to unline about, what will you give me? Now listen to me. When you don’t serve the Lord after you’ve trusted Him as your Savior, you’re wondering, what’s the world gonna give me if I don’t?
Now, if I serve the Lord, He is promised, when I leave this world, when I get to heaven, He’s gonna reward me. So I’m giving all of that up, if I live for the things of the world. If I betray this trust, then what will you give me? It’s like looking at the devil, and say, what \(\ will you give me if, ifCharg will you give me, if I betray this trust, oaded If I don’t serve God, and if I serve you, what will you give me?
What are you gonna give me? Because see, that’s actually what a person does. He says, what will a man give and exchange for his life? You’re exchanging something for something. The Lord has given up something for something better and we call that a sacrifice for the Lord. He says, I will deliver him unto you. and they cut into him for 30 pieces of silver. Now, when you read back in the book of Zachariah, It says that he would be betrayed for 30 pieces of silver.
30 pieces of silver, 30 shackles of shame. Was the price paid for Jesus on the cross? He was slain. 30 pieces of silver. That’s what he was going to be given. I’ll sell him for this price. When you talk about your life and for me to live is Christ. But if I give that a… that up and I sell him out. What do you give me? Is it a few years of pleasure? Fame, popularity, honor, glory. What are you giving up and this great trust that you’re betraying?
We can see easily how Judas did this, but we wonder why would a person do this? After he had been with him for all theserarily these years and seen, heard, and he would give it all up for 30 pieces of silverGOP. Now looking verse 16, and from that time he sought opportunity to betray him. Verse 17, now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread, the disciples came to Jesus saying unto him, where will thou that we prepare for thee to eat the Passover?
Because he is time. They got to go eat the Passover. He says in verse 18, going to the city to such a man and sending him, the master says, my time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at thy house with my disciples. And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them and they made ready the Passover. Now when the Eden was come, he sat down with the 12. So they all were there, even Judas. And they’re going to have a supper.
So they had the supper, and it says here in verse 21, as they did eat. He said, “‘Verily I send you that one of you shall betray me. One of you shall betray me.'” Did he know who it was? He knew it was going to happen. I want you to hold your place right here and just look over here with me. Look there in the book of John in chapter 6. John, chapters They said, don’t lose your place there at Matthew.
We’ll come in back, but you’ve got to see this in the book of John chapter 6. There were many people who followed the Lord. Many disciples. That means a follower, a learner, not somebody who trusted him as their Savior, but they believed that he was like a miracle worker and he could do this and provide all those fish sandwiches and so forth. So they came to get something to eat. And so Jesus told them some things that were a little hard for them to understand.
He says, what I want you to do, he says, any man who will eat my flesh will live forever. And any man who will drink my blood will live forever. You see, this is the first vampire? No, no, no, no, no. But Jesus Christ, he had incorruptible flesh, incorruptible blood. And it was like the tree in the garden, if they were to eat it, they could live forever. Jesus Christ himself, while he was here, he made this statement. And I want you to look at this, look there in verse, say verse 50, this is the bread which cometh down from heaven that a man may eat there of and not die.
So everybody wants to figure out how can I live forever. I don’t want to die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven, Jesus speaking. If any man eat of this bread, he shall live forever. And the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. The Jews therefore strove among themselves and how can this man give us his flesh to eat? Now evidently they really didn’t understand what he said.
This was evidently a hard saying. and verse 50. Then Jesus said unto them, except, he says, except you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Who shall we eat if my flesh and drink if my blood hath eternal life? Wow. Now look up in verse 47. Very, very, very, I said to you, he that believeth on me hath everlasting life. To eat the flesh, to drink the blood was simply to believe on Jesus Christ.
Believe in that He came into the world and He took upon Himself a body and led a perfect life without sin, didn’t have to die, but voluntarily shed His blood because Leviticus 1711 says, for the life of the flesh is in the blood and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your soul, for the life of the flesh is in the blood. If He’s going to give His life for me, He has to shed His blood and He did that by coming into the world, taking upon a body and dying on the cross.
And he proved all of that was true by coming back again from the dead. So they didn’t understand what he’s talking about. He’s driving them nuts. So he goes down here in verse 58, this is that bridge which came down from heaven, not as your fathers that eat manna and are dead. See in the Old Testament, they ate manna, came and they ate it. And then that had to get some and then get some more and get some more.
He said, I’ve got some bread. When you eat this bread, you’ll never die. He’s talking about, listen to what he said, he came from Bethlehem, the house of bread. Jesus Christ is the bread that came into the world to satisfy every person. So when you’re hungry for eternal life, there’s only one way to get it, one way to be satisfied, and that’s through believing that he died and paid for your sins, and you trust him as your Savior, he’ll give you eternal life.
You see, I had that one bite of bread, 56 years ago. I’ve never had to take another bite. I’ve never had to eat anymore. Why? Because it satisfies. I have known all these years that I have eternal life, and I know that I’m going to heaven when I die. Why? Because I’m so good? No, because the bread was so good. He says, “‘He the eateth of this bread shall live for how long? Forever, that’s his promise.’ And so when you eat this bread or you drink this blood, He said, for ever you have eternal life, because Christ, he didn’t have to die.
He’s giving you his life. And so we made these statements, he says in verse 16, many therefore of his disciples, when they heard this said, this is a hard saying. Who can understand this? When Jesus knew it himself, that his disciples murmured at it, he said to them, does this offend you? Are you offended by what I said? Evidently, yeah? Because I didn’t understand what he said. Didn’t understand what it meant. So he explains it. He says, there in 63, it is the spirit that quickeneth or makes alive.
The flesh, propheteth nothing. The words that I speak unto you, their spirit, their life, the words that I’m telling you. I came into this world to satisfy the hunger of every man. And then he says in verse 64, but there are some of you that believe not. If God was to reveal in this room right here, right now, Does God know every person in this room who does not believe on him? Does he know every person that does? He knows.
I don’t know. Well, I know y’all are going to heaven because you see, you came to church and you read the Bible and you pray and you give money, I hope. No. But you know, you don’t earn eternal life. It’s by grace. Grace means unmerited. You don’t deserve it. So this is why this is so important. Now look in verse 64, some of you don’t believe. Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed, not and who should betray Him.
So did Jesus know who believes on Him? What about His own disciples? He knew who believed, He knew who betrayed Him. And He said, therefore, I say to you in verse 65 that no man can come into me except that was given in him of my Father. From that time, many of His disciples went back, walk no more with Him. In other words, those were regretful words. They didn’t understand what he was talking about. It’s just like this. People can come to church, and many do.
And they’ll be going to church all over the world and not understand a thing about how to go to heaven. Yet it can be told and explained. And yet, many people, well, I’m going to be good just in case. Then you don’t get it. You don’t get it. You won’t go to heaven. You can’t be saved. Well, I’m going to be good just in case means that you don’t believe that he really paid for all of your sins. And that’s all you have.
have to do because you’re going to add to it and God says no. It’s either by grace and it’s free or you don’t get it. You either believe him or you don’t believe him. There is no plan A, B or CD. It’s just one way. Now get this. He says in verse 67, he says, will you also go away? Simon Peter said, Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life. We believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.
Jesus answered them, have not I chosen you 12? And one of you is a devil? Didn’t he know that? He already knew that. He spoke of Jesus’ carry at the Son of Simon for it is he that should betray him. How would you like to have that name that you betrayed God in the flesh? He came into the world and you’re the one that squealed and when it was dark and nobody else knew how to tell who he was in the dark because Jesus looked just like the rest of them.
He said, well, the one that I kiss, that’s the one. And so that’s why he betrayed him with a kiss. Now go back there to Matthew in chapter 26, chapter 26, and notice what he has here because this is so important down through here. He says, Aaron verse 24, the son of man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man, by home the son of man is betrayed. It had been good for that man if he had not been born.
Now think about that statement. Jesus knew, but he chose him to be a disciple, the following. Could Judas have believed on the Lord? He could have. And he says it had been best if this man had never been born. who’s decision was him to be born? Wasn’t that God’s decision? Wasn’t God who led him live? Wasn’t the Lord himself that made him a disciple? Didn’t God know he was gonna deny him? Betray him? But he had a choice that he could have made.
Do you realize every person who rejects Christ’s savior? Every person who dies and goes to hell. it would have been best if they had never been born. It would have been if they had never been born, then to live and to reject Jesus Christ. You see, well then why didn’t God let him be born? Because he gave him the opportunity to go to heaven and how wonderful and blessed didn’t he do that for me? I’m glad God allowed me to be born.
And I’m thankful that somebody brought the gospel to me. And I’m thankful that I trusted Christ as my savior. And that I’ll have eternal bliss for eternity. Unthankful, but it was a choice that I had to make. And I made that decision when I was 18 years old, I didn’t understand a lot of stuff. All I know is if what that man told me was true, I’m gonna bust hell wide open. And I would have gone to hell. But because of the mercy of the Lord, somebody explained it to me.
And I’ve told people this before. In 75 years, I’ve only had one man ever witnessed to me, one. And in the last 56 and a half years, nobody has witnessed me. And all the churches I’ve been to, all the countries that I’ve been to, I’ve been everywhere. Nobody has ever tried to win me to Christ, except my father-in-law. And he knew the only hope for his daughter was to get Yankee saved. And he led me to Christ. But he says here, it has been good for that man if he had not been born.
Now let me just mention this to you. After you trust Christ as your Savior, you made the greatest decision in all the world to go to heaven. God didn’t take you yet. He still left you here. How many years has he given you since you trusted the Lord? 10, 15, 20, 30? Did you know that if you do not serve the Lord, it would have been better for God to have taken you on home? Think about it. It would have been better for God just to take you on home, but God gave you the choice, gave you a chance, an opportunity to love the Lord, this side of the grave, to talk about how much He’s done for you, to brag on the Lord, and to try to accomplish some great things for the Lord.
You’d be surprised all the opportunities God’s given to us, how wonderful it is to serve Him. I would rather have it than not have it. You know, God could have done all this stuff and never have created me. I would have never known anything was ever done. I wouldn’t have never been here. But I’m glad that God allowed me to be born, and allowed me to be born where I could hear the gospel and trust Christ as my Savior, but see God gave me choices.
And I have been in a lot of places, and I’ve been in different countries, and I’ve seen people, and some will trust the Lord, and some will not. Some will believe, some will not believe. Nobody makes you believe. You can’t make a person become a Christian. You’re not a Christian because you were born in a Christian home. Well, my mom and dad are Christians. I get in. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. It’s an individual thing. Every person must trust the Lord.
Now get this. Down in verse 25,btn Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is that I? He said to him, thou have said. And},{” as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed it, and break it, and gave it to his disciples as taking this is my body. And he took the cup, gave thanks and gave it to them, saying, drink ye all of it, for this is my blood of the New Testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sin.
Now when he says, take this body and this bread, and this is my body, well, wait a minute, he knew that wasn’t his real body. Why? Because he’s still setting there in his real body. And that, yeah, he’s really got his real blood in his body. So this wasn’t his real blood. And many Catholics were taught to tell you this in trans-istensiation where it becomes the body and the blood of Christ and that’s how you get Christ inside of you.
That is not true. It’s a symbol. It represents something. The bread represents the body and the grape juice represents the blood. It is not the blood and is not the body. Now get what he says. In verse 29, but I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s Kingdom. He said, I’m coming back. I’m going to shed my life, my blood, but I’m coming back.
And especially to the nation of Israel, it’s going to be concerning the Kingdom. But you and I have a different story. But now notice the last part of verse 28. For this is my blood of the New Testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. When you trusted Christ as your Savior, that payment he made was put to your account And other places where it uses the word remission is the same as forgiveness of sins. God forgives you of everything you have ever done.
And doesn’t matter how bad you have been, or how bad you will be, all sin covered, paid for. Because he’s not coming back tomorrow to pay for what we did today. He’s already done it 2,000 years ago. So when you accept the payment Christ made on the cross for you, then you have a payment for your sins. And if I got a payment from my sins, the reason I can’t go to hell because I don’t have any sins to pay for.
All my sins are paid. That’s the only way you can know that you’re born to heaven is I don’t have any sins to pay for. Christ died for my sins. Five words, and yet are so very, very powerful.
