Anyway, we’re gonna talk a little bit about the High Leammen. You know, there’s a story in the Bible about a man that was, he was a slave, a servant, but I don’t know if he robbed his owner or anything like that, but Paul says, just in case, he says, if he owes you anything, he said, just put it on my tab. I’ll take care of it for him. It’s a beautiful story because Paul is in prison when he writes this little book with Feilemann.
Well, it’s talking about a man by the name of Onesimus, who was a slave, and how that he ought to, you know, go on back, you know, to his owner, his master. But he writes the letter and tells him what he thinks he ought to do, you know, Feilemann ought to do about this runaway slave. That’s a good story. But But anyway, I want you to go ahead and be turned in there to the book of Valimis right before the book of Hebrews.
It’s a little book, only about a little or a page and small but yet very powerful, very important. And then when you get to Valimis, just kind of hold your place here and look in the book of Ephesians chapter 6, because we’re going to be coming back there, but look in Ephesians in chapter 6. Because we often, when we read about what the Holy Spirit wants us to do, it tells us, husbands love your wives and so on, and wives be in subjections to your husband, and kids obey your parents.
But we don’t usually spend much time talking about the servant and the master because we just kind of rush over those because we don’t have a lot of slaves today. their servants. And Paul says he was a doolossae, he was a love slave of the Lord. And so there’s nothing wrong with being a love slave of the Lord. And maybe that’s what some of us are. But here in the book of Ephesians in chapter 6, notice what he says down here in verse 5.
After he’s talked to children obey your parents and the Lord and so on, then he says in verse 5, servants be obedient to them that are your masters, according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, and singleness of your heart as unto Christ. Not with eye service has men pleasers, but as the servants of Christ doing the will of God from the heart. So whether you are a wife and consider yourself a slave, I’ve had women tell me, he says, I’m not going to be a slave to any man.
Okay, their marriage wasn’t doing too good either. But anyway, you got to treat a woman right. That’s the only thing. And if you treat them right, they respond right. But you can’t get out of bow with me. Snap to woman and she’ll snap to you. And they call up like a rattlesnape. Then strike back and they got poisoned in her fangs. And the Bible talks about a contentious woman like a constant raindrop on there. This woman says, I’m not saying my wife’s a nag she goes to the blacksmith shop to get her shoes, but as we move right along here.
But now look what he says here also in verse 7, with good will doing service as to the Lord and not to man, knowing that whatsoever good thing any man do it, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free. In other words, if you’re a free man and you’re a master and you’ve got servants. Well the servant that’s what he can get just as blessed and just as many rewards is the man who’s over him.
Just because a man’s the boss doesn’t mean he gets more rewards. God’s gonna reward you according to your humbleness, your submissiveness, to the one that’s over you. Everybody’s got somebody they have to answer to. Nobody’s just really free to do whatever you want to do. Because if you don’t do what’s right, you don’t have much left. And sooner or later, you lose everything. So there’s responsibility, there’s accountability. But it’s very important. See, there in verse 9, any masters do the same things unto them.
forbearing, threatening, knowing that your master also is in heaven. Neither is there a respect of persons with him. In other words, God’s going to treat the master and the servant the same. So every one of us should serve the Lord with all our hearts. And it doesn’t matter if you sweep the floor, you clean the commodes or you work in ranch or you work in the choir. The job is not as important as the submissiveness and the spirit in which you do your job.
So that’s why we often make the statement about what’s God’s purpose in our life. And if we listen to that video the other night from about Ray, it’s just be a soul winner. You might be a lawyer, but why do you want to be a lawyer that I might win souls? Why do you want to be a doctor that I might win souls? Why do you want to be a bus driver that I might win souls? Well, whatever the job is, that I might win souls.
I can win some this way. I can win some here. I can win some here. Whatever your job is that I might win souls. It doesn’t matter whether or not you work for a company or you know, you’re Don Mcdonald’s or wherever you that I might win souls. You understand how simple it is? That’s a simple to understand. Because you can like do a lot of different things, but it’s that I might win souls, that I might win souls.
You may have to get a job and you make money that you might win souls. Why have you been missioning that I might win souls? Why am I’m pastor because I might win souls? Why don’t we get YouTube that I might win souls? Why we got rants that we might win souls? What we got to want them that we might win souls? Everything we do is that we might win souls. Pretty old broadcast that we might win souls. You take that, I want to win souls, take it out of that.
There’s no purpose to anything. There’s no reasons for it. Just eat drinking, me, Mary, and do whatever you want to do. But there’s got to be this main purpose that keeps us on track. Also take your by looking first Timothy chapter six. First Timothy chapter six. First Timothy chapter six. Just turn to your left, there are a few pages. But you’ll notice there in first Timothy chapter six. Servant to the master again. And he says here in first Timothy chapter six, looking verse one.
Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honor. In other words, you serve as you should, give in due respect to those that are over you. And you should always be conscious of your time and the quality of the work that you do, and always seek to do a good job. I don’t really try to ride herd on anybody that works in the ministry. I really don’t. I mean, what’s her name back there?
Marjorie. Marjorie, don’t forget it. Now she works around here, she cleans up, but I don’t walk around and I don’t always check. I don’t do that. Because I trust her to do her job. Because if she’s working for the Lord, then she’s gonna do a good job as far as I’m concerned. I don’t write her own payer. Half the time I don’t need words, he’s adding what he’s doing. I just know he’s gonna do a good job because he always does a good job in everything he does.
Same thing with Jesse. I never know where Jesse’s at, no. But I trust him to do their job Because if they’re working for the Lord, I know somebody else is gonna whoop the tar on them if they don’t do right. Ain’t that true? There’s more of a freedom. I want people to be happy serving God without the tension and always the threat. Ah, I don’t like to do that. I’m accused of being a mean old dictator. Maybe I am, maybe I don’t see me the way I really am, but I don’t think I’m like that.
I try to be sweet and nice and kind. I’m the sweetest person I know. that right warrant. See, it weren’t, said it’s that. But now, noted, he said, let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honor, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed. This is why you’ll find out when he gives you all of these things. It also sometimes will add interspation and collations in chapter three. It says, and what’s over by hands find us to do?
What’s the last part? Do it with all I might. So whether you’re the pastor, whether it’s the husband, whether it’s the wife, whether it’s the kids, whatever you do, do it as unto the Lord. No one believe in that God is going to reward or bless you for doing so. And that’s what the scriptures is talking about. And he says, these things, see in verse two, and they that have believing masters, let them not despise them or take advantage of them.
You know, well, they’re Christians and so they’ll cut me slack. You know, I can do this and get away with it and so forth. If you work on a job, I’d say do right by it. Earn what you’re supposed to get and do right and honor the person and God will bless you for doing it. He says, let them not despise them because they are brethren. But rather do them service because they are faithful and beloved partakers of the benefit.
These things teach and exhort. This is what God wants us to do. It’s an important thing. Look in Titus in chapter two, just a couple pages back from Philemon. And you’ll notice in chapter two, now we could go the whole chapter two. But because the whole thing down through here is very good, I’m not sure I like the part where the Bible talks about, you know, when Paul makes a statement about, I’m aged. And I think I’ve already lived longer than Paul did.
was aged. But the only way we get, the better we’re supposed to get, right? Age, Jesus is supposed to get better. But I don’t know if everything does. I was told that I was starting, Betty and Trina both told me, he says, you’re mellowing. And then I found out that’s right before rotten. But look there in Titus in chapter 2, he says, But speak down the things which become sound doctrine, that the aged men be sober. Grave, it doesn’t say gray hair, grave, almost there anyway.
Tempered self-control, sound and faith, in charity, love and inpatient, the aged women also. I call them men, I can call them right at one time, we call everybody starting to come out, we call them each other senior citizens. Senior citizens. And this one older gentleman in the church, I said that one day, and I said, you know, because of our senior citizen, I thought it was a proper term to use. Well, not everybody was using that at the time.
And he really got offended that I would call him a senior citizen. I thought it sounded pretty good, but he was a senior citizen. And he didn’t like it at all. He had mad at me. I mean, we still stayed friend, but I mean, he was mad for the moment. But there’s sometimes there’s women who are, you know, think of those aged women. How do you say that without offending them? Young women. Now, the only acceptable term is younger woman.
You see, men go through different stages, you know, as a baby and then a child, and then a adolescent, your teenagers, and then young men and then older men and then senior and then dead. But the women, they go through childhood, baby childhood and teenagers, and then young woman, young woman, and young woman, and young woman, and young woman. And they all die as a young woman. So I’m just, they get younger as they get older. I better just leave that thing alone.
That dog is my huntin’ on. But anyway, here in verse 3, you know, I don’t know if we’re gonna make it to Fileiman, but we’re gonna try. Who knows? But here it’s, because this is, it’s good, because it deals with this subject about those that are over you and sometimes you may be under somebody and you’ve got responsibilities. But remember if you’re faithful to what you can under even a boss, well then God’s going to take care of that.
God bless. God’s going to reward you. Don’t worry about it. You don’t always have to be in charge. If you had my job, you sometimes you’ll wish you hadn’t got to make some decisions. I’m always offended. and some, every decision does, some, nobody likes, I might want to money decisions. And Warren, would you behave? So it says here, women in verse three, keep off the wine. That was paraphrased here. But look at verse four, that they may teach the younger women, that’s scarier.
It’s okay if the women that are older knew the word of God and they can teach the younger women. So some people say, we know women shouldn’t teach. what do you want to do with that? That they may teach the younger women. Does that say anything about women teaching younger women? I don’t see anything wrong with women teaching women. I’d rather women teach the women than me teach the women. I don’t mind talking to the women every once in a while, but that’s not my forte.
Sometimes I don’t do too good with a man either. So, look what he says about loving your husbands, teach them to love their children. This one woman teaches the other women. That’s what they do. They’re supposed to know how to do that. In verse 5, to be discreet, chase keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, and not somebody else’s, that the Word of God be not blasphemed. Because people can say something. And you know what, you hear about all these pure people now that are coming out of the wood work and somebody’s running around with this person, that person, even in Florida, you know, Congress right up here for Intella Haci, they got problems of people spying on each other, setting up cameras and catching people.
I mean nobody will ever know. It makes me know it’s on Facebook. I mean they got everything everywhere. You can’t trust anybody. Not with these phones we got today. Then you got to watch your P’s and Q’s and the rest of the alphabet. And so he says in verse, young men likewise exhort to be sober minded. And all things showing thyself a pattern of good works, in doctrine showing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, sound speech that cannot be condemned, that heed that is of the contrary part may be ashamed.
Having no evil thing to say of you, other words, keep your testimony above reproach. Verse nine, exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things, not answered again, not talking back. Do you like it when you ever used to create your kids and they’d talk back? They’d like it. Don’t you back talk me. I could just look at my kids and they knew you don’t back talk Daddy. Especially if you’re within arms reach.
Have you ever had to chase him around a room? My Daddy, not so much of my real Daddy, he beat me with a piece of stoward. You know, he broke everybody in my body I think. But not really, but I felt like it. But my stepdad, now he would get a razor strap and he’d hold me by the hand. And he would come around with that razor strap. Man, I’m jumping up here, I’m jumping down here and we’re running around in a circle.
He’s running in a circle trying to kind of hit me. And man, I got it from the back of my feet all the way to the top of my head. I got whipped. I’d have been better off out of this good steel and took it in that little padding that got built back there. But no, no, no, no, no. I ran for my life while he’s holding on to my arm. Have you ever had the dad said, I’m going to take you to the wood pile.
It’s not to cut wood. But anyway, he says down here, exhort one another. In verse 10, not purlowing, learning, he said, but showing all good fidelity. Remember when they came out with these record players and they were high fidelity. What they were talking about is you can take the quality and hear the quality without losing inequality. It’s coming like our CDs, we are today, you know where they can burn it, and every copy is a master. It doesn’t work like it doesn’t lose anything.
In other words, the quality of the word of God being placed into you without losing inequality. In other words, you live according to the sound doctrine, it’s in the word, and it’s a good transfer. It’s a transfer of the sound of the Word of God into you, and as you live your Christian life, it comes across that away. I mean, that’s what he’s talking about, but that’s a hard living. Now look at the last part, that they may adorn the doctrine of God, our Savior, in all things.
In other words, you and I are supposed to live according to the doctrine that we learn in the Word of God. That’s why it’s so important to learn the Word of God. But back here in the book of Falington. Well, let’s look at one more before we do. Look in 1 Peter chapter two, 1 Peter chapter two, 1 Peter chapter two and verse 18. He’s telling us a little bit about doing well, doing the right things. Then he says in verse 18, servants, servants, be subject to your masters with all fear.
not only to the good and the gentle, but also to the forward. Now you can see the word, two word toward and forward, to and from. And whenever you see those two words, those who to truth and from truth, there’s people who are not doing according to truth, natureconservancy and they can defraud you, they wrong you. You still treat them right, still do right. If you do right only because people are doing you right, what reward should you get? As he says in the book of Matthew chapter five, what have you done if you simply love those who love you?
It’s when you love those whoOrigin love you. Now you’re doing something. Now you’re going above something. So when you understand that, you understand a little bit more about where Paul’s coming from because go to the full layman, the book of full layman. And look in verse one. In verse one, Paul a prisoner of Jesus Christ. He was a bond slave and he’s also called a prisoner, a doulas. He says, Paul a prisoner of Jesus Christ and Timothy our brother unto Philemon, our dearly beloved and fellow labor.
Now Paul believes and calls Timothy and Philemon, we are our brothers. These are ours. I mean, we are brothers in the Lord. And so he’s recognized now Paul had a great impact upon Philemon. And so he kind of mentions that a little bit as goes along here. And then he says this, not only the word our brother there, but in verse two and our beloved, and our Chippos, our fellow soldiers and to the church in thy house. So here’s a man who has a church in his house.
So he’s a leader. He’s a good man, a godly man. And he has two things in his favor. one is faith and one is love. And so he demonstrates that. Frie you look down there in verse 5, he said, Now I thank God because of you, and I make mention of you in my prayers, but then in verse 5, hearing of, see that word, thy love and faith, which thou hast toward the Lord Jesus and toward all saints. Now faith is the source from which love is derived.
See if you have faith in what God’s word says, then it teaches you to love one another. So your faith in the Lord is so important and faith in doctrine because see we don’t just love according to feelings. If you wait till you have the feelings you’re going to be greatly deceived. We are to love people because God has commanded us to love. But see in our minds we think, well if I don’t love you I just don’t love you.
Love is a command. You’re told to do that. Love one another. Husbands love your wife. That’s a command. It means that you love is a choice. Love not the world. Set your affections on things above. See, you can choose what to love and you can choose what not to love. And so your obedience to God if I love God. God and God says, love your wife. All right, then I have to provide and take care and protect and feed and all the things God wants me to do, then I do that.
Why? Because I love God. And so your faith in what God says is the basis for your love for one another. And so, Philemon had love because of his faith. If you want to grow in love, grow in your faith in what God says to do, and it’ll work. Now look what else he says here. You see, fate has this object in the Lord, but love is directed by two all of God’s people. So when he makes this statement here and toward all saints, he’s gonna let Filey Man know.
I’m gonna ask you to do something that’s beyond just loving the saints. There’s a guy that used to work for you, and he ran away, and he wind up in jail, and guess who was in jail? Paul was. Paul went to jail. Well lo and behold, here’s Onissimus, and he’s in jail, and Paul leads him to Christ. trust the Lord. Paul teaches him, and one of the other books it talks about in the last chapter about the God using this man named Onesimus.
And he had also brought back no doubt a couple of the books and like maybe Ephesians and Colossians and the book of Philemon. He came back with these letters and God used this young man. But he had maybe wrong but Paul didn’t say he did. He says, If he has wronged you, if, he says, just put it on my tab, I’ll take care of it. But there’s something that Paul is doing, it’s kind of like he’s setting them up.
I told you all this before, we used to, I have a bowling alley, and years ago, they didn’t have these automatic pin setters. The only thing was automatic is you, you got in there, and you had to stand inside and you get onto the side of that thing and they’d throw that ball down there and they had a thing up there. You could see them, but they couldn’t see you. And that ball come down there and just those pins everywhere, and they’re just flying.
And you try not to get killed. Then afterwards, you got down there and you set up those pins, moved the bad ones out of the way, and you reset some of the ones right in the right spot. Then you get back up out of the way, and then here comes it again. Why do you set those pins up?
So you can knock them down. He’s gonna set him up. So you knock him down. He’s got something you’re gonna hit him with. And he was a good man, a godly man. And Paul knows that you owe me, but he doesn’t want to use that, but he wants to let him know that he could, but he’s not going to. The way he words it is awesome. But look what he says here in verse six. Now Paul says to Falim and I have one more, and this is an effectual illustration for us to show God’s love.
Now this is the real test. See, Paul is letting Falim and God, you know, it’s one thing to love all of those that are so lovable. And you got a church in your house? And everything’s going great, and what we have heard about your love and your faith, I mean, you made an impact. He said, but I got something else for you. So he made this statement here. Look in verse 6, that the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing, which is in you in Christ Jesus.
words, God wants us to demonstrate our love and our faith in every way. And this is like, it’s like, I’ve got one more good idea for you. One more way, what about a slave? What about somebody that worked for you and he ran off? Now there’s somebody that you get a chance to demonstrate really the Christian faith. Now in our Christian life, it’s so easy to be nice kind to those who are nice and kind, isn’t it? But do you ever have somebody that’s not nice and kind, that’s just mean and cantankers?
And you want to be the same way back to them. Look what he says. In verse 7 he says, for we have great joy and consolation in thy love because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by the brother. In other words, your love is so encouraging. Your love is so encouraging. And it’s like I’m going to ask you a request and I want you to, well, I want you to cheer me up. Remember where’s Paul? He’s in prison.
And I want you to cheer me up. I want to know that you’re going to do this, but I already know that you’re going to do it. And you’re going to even do more than I’m asking you to do. This is what he says to him. Now if you get this letter and you read it, how could you let Paul down? How could you not do what Paul wanted to have done? So he says in verse 8, so Paul has set him up, instead of saying, you owe me Paul request.
He says, wherefore though I might be much bold in Christ to enjoin thee that which is convenient in other words it’s a lot easier on me just to say do this and order him and boss him around but that’s not what Paul won. He wants him to do it because he really wants to do it because Paul is using you know we’ve heard about your great faith and your love to all the same. Well here’s one more, a runaway slave and I’m going to send him back to you and I want you to receive him just as though you were receiving me.
He’s coming in my stead.” So he says here in verse 9 yet, for love’s sake I rather be seat-steer, being such as one as Paul, you’re on the line this. I don’t like it but you’re on the line of Paul the aged. And now Now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ and he was a real prisoner. He really was. He was a love slave of the Lord, but he was also in jail.
