So there is a rest that we have in the work that Christ did. Christ did the work, and we simply accept except what he did for us. I’m not working for my salvation because I have entered into that rest. You see, he did the work and I do the resting. I accept what he did for me and I have eternal life and look what I get just for pause of my little faith. My little faith that I put in, look at the benefits of what I got for that.
Also, God has a rest in Canaan. You know when he brought those people out of Egypt and across the Red Sea and into the wilderness. See some people believe that that’s the type of salvation through the Red Sea and into the wilderness that rebellious stage we all go through and everybody’s going their own way and God’s having the spankers a little bit and teaches how to walk, not to talk, not to discipline ourselves. But there’s a land of promise I got for you.
Well some people will never get into the land of Canaan. That’s not heaven, that’s a place of victory. That’s where they fought their battles and that’s where God promised them victory over their enemies if they would do what? Trust them? They sit in some spies and the spies come back and says, we’re just like grasshoppers in their sight. I mean, they’re giants. And so everybody was scared. So they told the people, and they say, no, you got 10 of the spies that went in, convinced all the people, and next they know the only ones after all these years, Jals, Shwind, and Caleb got to go into the promised land.
He didn’t have to be that away. They had already got to the place called Kedjbarnia. They had an 11-day journey and instead they had to spend 40 years in the wilderness until they all died off and the next generation he took them into the promised land. See that’s why it is with some Christians. They’ll never get into the land of promise where they reach the state of maturity where they can learn as a spiritual Christian to learn how to rest in the Lord.
And so there’s people who, their Christian life all boils down to is my wisdom, my abilities, my talents, and it’s whatever I can handle. And they don’t have a clue about how to trust the Lord for whatever God wants to do in their life. And they’re always trying to manipulate. That’s why they fall apart. They’re trying to, they’re not held together. There’s nothing there. You know, they’re weak in the Lord. They can’t handle spiritual responsibilities. So So there’s all these different rest that are mentioned down through here.
But He does tell us in chapter 4 there about let us labor that we might enter into His rest. In other words, there’s work that you do in order to get to the place where you can rest in the Lord. Because it’s just like kids come into college. There’s so much they don’t know. But they got to study and memorize all that. And that’s work. But they’re working hard like that because someday they want to be able to rest and be to take God at His Word in whatever God says and they can rest in God’s leadership and God’s provision and God’s peaceillance and everything in life and enjoy life.
But if they don’t, there’ll be a nurse as a cat on a hot tin roof. They’ll not understand life, but there is a rest. And so the thing about this rest based upon the Word of God. So you see there in chapter four, We’re looking verse 12. Verse 12, for the word of God is quick. We’re alive and sharp and powerful. Then any two-edged sword piercing, even to the dividedness, son of the soul and spirit and of the joints and tomorrow and it’s the discernment of the thoughts and the intents of the heart.
That’s the power of the word of God. So you learn the word of God because you say you can’t grow without the word of God. And that’s why he’s told him. He says, you’re dull of hearing. In other words, you don’t understand, like you don’t wanna know. And because of that, you don’t grow. So this is why you find these verses here in Hebrews in chapter five, when he makes a statement in verse 12, for when for the time you ought to be what?
Teachers! Could they? No. Has there been enough time that God knows that you could have been? Because they did not prepare themselves. And a lot of people will never do it because, well, I just can’t do it. I just don’t know. Why haven’t you prepared yourself? Every Christian should know how to teach the Word of God. You say, well, I don’t know how to teach the Word that you ought to. Why some people can do it and you can’t do it.
You know, I just can’t do it. Yes, you can. You chose not to. You chose not to prepare. Anyway, you want to cut it. We can learn how to do whatever we want to do. Is it, sometimes we don’t want to do it. And so I can’t do that. Yes, you can, you chose not to. But whatever you choose not to do because of not trusting and believing God, it’s going to cost you in the long run because how shall we, believers, escape if we neglect so great a salvation?
And then God give us the time in which we live of how much we could have done for the Lord. So anyway, I think I got off of my notes. I’m not sure where I’m at, but look in chapter six. Chapter six, look in verse three. And this will we do if God permits, if God permits. And then he explains what he says. You don’t have to lay again the foundation of salvation, which is mentioned down there in verse one.
Let us go on to maturity, building up yourself, being strong and listen to what God says, obey in the Lord. And this is what we do if God permits, but he will not permit you to grow if you do not take him at his word. You cannot grow without trusting God’s word. So as you read and study the word of God, you can grow. If you don’t do it, you’re not going to listen. You’re not going to learn. You’re not going to have the light.
And that’s why in chapter six when he says, and if they shall fall away to renew them again and to repentance. So in my notes, I wrote this down. And this is what we do if God permits, well, in that verse 6, if they shall fall away, God can’t do this. Can’t do what? He can’t save you again. You see, you can’t lose your salvation because if you couldn’t lose it, God can’t save you again because it means that the payment Christ made was not sufficient and therefore you committed a sin that caused you your salvation and Christ isn’t coming back to make any more sacrifice.
There is no more sacrifice for sins. Hebrews chapter 10. So you can’t get saved and lose your salvation. I’ve said this before, I’ll say it again. If a man could lose a salvation, there ought to be at least one story in the Bible that says so, or one verse in the Bible that says it. Do you think, I mean, that’s a critical thing. If you could lose your salvation, there ought to be a verse in the Bible says you can lose it.
And if a man could lose it and get saved again, there ought to be a verse in the Bible or an illustration where somebody lost and got it back. Find it. Why can’t you find it? It ain’t in there. Why do you think God in chapter 12 of Hebrews can chasten his children? What’s he chasing them for being good or being disobedient? Probably disobedient. Scourged at every one of his sons. Now, chasing can include teaching and instruction in a lot of different areas, but scourged in, that don’t sound good to me.
But anyway, the next thing down here at the bottom of your page, Hebrews chapter 7 and verse 11, chapter 7 verse 11, Hebrews chapter 7 and verse 11, if therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, for under it the people received the law, what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchizedek and not be called after the order of Aaron. But remember, all the priests had to come from the tribe of Levi and Aaron priesthood because he was the brother of Moses and he got that honor.
But the problem was they would die. And then another one had to take his place and then he’d die. And then another one had to take a plane and then he’d die. But Jesus came down and was a high priest and he made a sacrifice not with the blood of bulls and and goes but himself. And so he goes back to heaven. So Jesus is not a high priest on the earth. He’s a high priest there. Because you see, there’s no sacrifice for him to make down here.
There’s no kind of sacrifice Jesus needs to make anymore. That’s why they don’t need to go back to the temple and make anymore sacrifices. And so he’s trying to educate him a little bit. So look down here also in verse 19. Verse 19 is a very important verse because it really shows you something. If you have to be perfect to go to heaven and you do, for the law made nothing perfect. You ever hear people you got to keep the law?
Keep the law. Well what does it say right there? The law made nothing perfect. But the bringing in of a better hope did. So there is something better than the law. I wonder what it was. You ever heard of GRACE and Jesus Christ? Jesus Christ. Grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. He brought grace. The law brings condemnation. Cursed is everyone that continues not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. So after Aaron, they all died.
After Melchizedek, there was no death. In other words, Melchizedek had, we don’t have it, recorded, beginning or ending. And so many believe this is a Jesus Christ himself. That’s fine with me. I have no problem with it. But I don’t see where Jesus has to come down here and make another payment and then another payment, then he might as well just stay here because it would never end. But he made one payment once and for all. Look at page two, page two, Hebrews chapter eight and verse four, Hebrews chapter eight and verse four.
Now notice what he says here, for if he were on earth he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law. So if he’s here he’s going to be a priest and he has to make sacrifices, otherwise what kind of work is he going to do? But now he is our high priest in in heaven and we come to the throne of grace and we can receive grace to help in time of need.
And so we have someone who understands who already been victorious, came back from the dead and he’s in heaven, interceding for us. So we have a high priest. And believe it or not, when you trust the Christ as your Savior, you became a priest of God. You are a priest. Dr. Stanford said that he had this guy run over by a car right in front of him and he was knocked up against the curb and the guy was dying and he got down there beside the guy and he was saying, call me a priest, call me a priest, get me a priest.
And Ray was saying, he says, I’m a priest. He says, you’re a priest. Yes. And so Ray talked to him and he says, now this is what I want you to do. He came to the goth with God trust the Lord. You are, you’re a priest. You didn’t know that, did you? Well, anyway, as we’re movingDamage along. But all these things are mentioned in the word of God for a reason. They’re good. Now look in chapter 9 and verse 13.
Chapter 9 verse 13, there’s two verses here, but you’ll notice there’s a word that’s used here and we’re just taking a look at it. The word conscience, the word conscience. See the payments in the Old Testament that were made, the offerings and so on, never could purge the conscience because you knew you were still guilty. Why? Because it didn’t pay for your sin. It didn’t do away with the guilt. You’re still guilty, you still did it. And so there’s this weight that was always because of the law.
So you see there in chapter 9, look in verse 9, talking about the payment Christ made in all, which was a figure for the time then present in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices that could not make him that did the service perfect. So it didn’t help the high priest, did make him perfect, neither did it help the person that he did it for. It didn’t save that person. None of these sacrifices that they may pay for any sin did not save anybody.
They were still saved by faith in what that sacrifice meant as it refers to Christ. They were still saved by their confidence in the Messiah that would come. Now notice what he says in verse 11, but Christ being come in high priests of good things to come by a greater and more perfect tabernacle. He knows it’s always talking about how that whatever Christ is, whatever he has, it’s always bigger, better. And more perfect Kaepernick not made with hands that is to say, not of this building.
Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained temporary salvation for us. Eternal redemption. Eternal salvation. Get to it. For if the blood of bulls and of goats and the ashes of a heifer Sprinkle the unclean, sanctify to the purifying of the flesh. In the words, if those sacrifice they made, it purify your flesh, your physical body, but it did not save your soul. How much more in verse 14?
Shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal spirit, offer himself without spot to God and see those next three words, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? It can give you life. The law cannot give you life. The sacrifice they made no time, it could not give you life. And then in chapter nine and verse nine, that part I just missed there just a minute ago. The last part of that verse says, that could not make him that did the service perfect as pertaining to the conscience.
Now look in chapter 10 of the book of Hebrews and notice what it says here. He says in verse 2, for then would they not have ceased to be offered? Because that the worshipper once purged should have had no more conscience of sins. Because it never washed away their sins, never purified them, never cleansed them of any sin. That’s only because of what Christ did. We know we have been forgiven and our sins will never come back upon us and we don’t go to heaven to seek sin, can’t go to heaven.
God will not let one sin in heaven. That’s why you can’t have to be judged for sin in heaven because sin can’t be there. But anyway, that’s another story on down the road. Look at the next verse. That’s in chapter 10 and verse 26. And we’ve covered this before. And I believe it’s a reference to goes all the way back to Hebrews in chapter two, when he talks about this, how shall we escape if we neglect no great a salvation?
if we do this willingly. Whenever you know the truth and you rebel against the truth and you do it in your way. And also he says here, for if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, they remain as no more sacrifice for sin. No more has to be made by Christ or by any high priest. They don’t need him anymore. You don’t need to go back to the temple. Go to church. Go to Calvary community church.
He said, but a certain fearful looking for a judgment in fiery indignation which shall devour the adversaries, and then it relates again back to look what happened to them under the law. When people disobeyed the law, was there any punishment? Not to scare you half to death, but he says, how much sword punishment suppose you shall he be thought worthy who have trodden under foot the Son of God and have counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified and unholy thing and have done despite unto the Spirit of great, resisting the Holy Spirit.
As your Father did so do ye. And so he talks about, don’t you rise, the Lord shall judge his people. And in verse 31 it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. But all this is mentioned and there’s a contrast as you go through and study these verses. I’ll look in chapter 11 and in verse 15. Chapter 11 and verse 15. And we talked about this also last week. And truly if they had been mindful, if they had been mindful of that country from which they came out, they might have had opportunity to every turn.
But I don’t guess God gave them a map of they didn’t have a GPS. I don’t know. But I know this. You ought to be thankful sometimes that God does not let you know everything. And sometimes you ever heard somebody says, we burnt our bridges behind us. What does that mean? I’m not planning on going back. I burned my bridges behind me. Now in Hebrews in chapter 12, it mentions this several times. But in chapter 12, look in verse seven.
If, if ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons, for what son is he, whom the Father chafed and not. Now, whenever a child of God is being chastened in the eyes of people, all people can see is something happening to you. Because you can do right and serve the Lord and something wrong happened to you. So you can’t always tell that if a Christian is going through hard times, well, God must be chastened him. He’s not sinning his life.
Don’t you become one of Job’s friends? I know why. God’s going to turn it on you. You don’t always know why. It could be because somebody’s serving the Lord and doing right and they’re being tested. And another person is doing something wrong, but you don’t know the inner parts of their hearts. And you don’t know what it is. And they could be going through the same thing and to them it’ll be chasing upon them. So you’ve got to be careful how you judge because you can’t always see what’s going on behind the scenes.
And sometimes a person may be certain of the Lord, like here’s the apostle Paul. You know if Paul had been right with the Lord, he wouldn’t have been in jail. If he had served the Lord, they’d have never cut his head off. He must have done something wrong. Right? No. He did everything. You know Jesus would not have had to go to the cross and suffer like that if he hadn’t made so many people mad. If he’d only read Dale Carnegie’s book on how to win friends and then you know If you just read that book, because you know he made people upset.
He offended people. He could have found a better way to say it. You know that guy named John the Baptist. You know I lost his head? He said something about a man’s wife. He should have just shut up. If he hadn’t said that, he’d still been alive. That he, see, he went too far. And he calls it that God took off his head. You see how you can carry that and go the wrong direction so easy? And you might see a person in the church and they might love the Lord and they’re doing everything they know possible.
That’s right. And everything’s going wrong. It’s like everything’s happening. And no matter what they do, it seems like, total chaos. And somebody else, you know they’re not doing right and everything’s working out good for them. That’ll burn you. That’s why he says in the seven-eighth Psalm even in the seven-eighth Psalm. But especially in the seven-eighth Psalm when David is talking about in the thirty-seventh Psalm, those two Psalms go together. When I saw the prosperity of the wicked, How my foot had well nice-slipped.
But then I saw the end, the end result, and then I felt alright because I know it ain’t over yet. But it’s amazing how we can prejudge and not get everything correctly. So anyway, look there in chapter 12 in verse 20, chapter 12 and verse 20. He’s already talked about, you know, here’s somebody like Esau who had the birthright and according to the Bible he could have inherited the blessing. But he sold his birthright and then after he’d done it, the Bible says, just look at this in verse 16, lest there be any fornicator or profane person as Esau who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.
In other words he was first in line. For ye know how that afterwards when he would have inherited the blood he would have. He was rejected for he found no place of repentance though he saw it carefully with tears. Now he cried, he tears, changes his mind. But see God didn’t change his mind. He couldn’t get God to change his mind. He couldn’t get his dad to change his mind. Isn’t just one blessing? He begged. So then you come down here and he says, when I came to the mountain verse 18, for you’re not coming to the mount that might be touched and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness and darkness and tempest, and the sound of a trumpet, the voice of words, which voiced that they heard and treated that the word should not be spoken to them anymore.
They didn’t want God to speak to them because it was a scary thing to go to this mountain that darts would shoot through you and smoke and lightening and thundering and all that stuff. Scared the people half of that. They said Moses, you talk to them. And the Bible says, and Moses went into the darkness where God was. You want God to use you? Walk into the darkness and trust the Lord when you can’t see anything else. And you’re going to have to focus upon the Lord and trust the Lord.
See some people they want to, they want to wear the battles but they don’t want the battles. And so he says in verse 21, excuse me, 20, for they could not endure that which was commanded. And if so much as a beast touched the mountain, it shall be stoned, thrust through with a dart. And so terrible was the sight that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and And this is the way it was under the law. And they suffered such consequences throughout the law.
Do you think there’s gonna be consequences for the child of God? I don’t know what all they’ll be, or when it’ll come. But there’s gotta be more to it than meets the eye. This is why he says they’re in the same chapter, see there in verse 25, See that you refuse not him that speaketh. See this, I believe goes all the way back to the very beginning of the book. He’s talking to Christians. And then at the end of it, he’s kind of like giving you a conclusion to the matter.
For if they escape not, who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape. If we turn away from him, that spakeeth from him, if we turn away, this is talking to God’s children turning away from truth, turning away from God and not serving God. So I believe they book of Hebrews, if it’s written, is written to Jewish Christians. If they’re Jewish Christians, I believe they’re in the church. And if you’re in the church, I believe the book of Hebrews is for the church.
It’s for me too. I believe I can learn a lot of things from the book of Hebrews that can help me in my Christian life. You’re gonna see, there’s a lot of warnings in the scriptures, especially in the book of Hebrews. Get a chance to y’all to go through and just see that. But now notice as he goes down through, he says this. In verse 28, wherefore we receive in the kingdom, which cannot be moved, let us have grace.
Whereby we may serve God, now why do you go to the throne of grace? Remember in chapter 4 verse 16? Therefore come boldly to the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy and help and grace and time of need. Look what he says. Having grace whereby and see those next forward we may serve God. Why do you go to the throne of grace? Because you want to serve God and he’ll give you everything that you need. You stay right with the Lord and just keep close to the Lord and serve the Lord acceptably with reverence and Godly fear for God is a consuming fire.
I love the book of Hebrews. To know He was so means you’ll look up here. Oh by the way, down to the bottom of the page I wrote three little things in bold. I think you ought to take a look at it. If you will trust Christ, He will save you. If you will dedicate your life to Christ after salvation, Christ will use you. If you will serve him, he will reward you. If, if you don’t trust Christ, he will not save you.
If you don’t dedicate your life to serve the Lord, then he’s not going to be able to use you. And if you don’t serve him, he’s not going to reward you. See, there’s things that are conditioned upon you, what you do and how you live, how you think. And there’s deep consequences for disobedience, but the great blessings if you serve Him. Look up here, if this hand represents you and me, the wallet represents sin. We all have sin on us.
Now God says that He loves us. He hates our sin, but He loves us. And the wages of sin is death. To pay for what we do is eternal separation from God in Hell. God loves us, who wants us to go to heaven. And to go to heaven, we have to be perfect, because righteousness is God, no sin. So because none of us are perfect, we’re all sinners. no sin permitted into heaven. And we to pay for it means eternal separation from God in hell.
So we cannot save ourselves. We need a Savior. This hand represents Jesus Christ. He’s the Lord God in the flesh. He came into the world because He loves us. It’s our sin because our sin separates us from Him. So Jesus Christ who had no sin didn’t have to die. So He took all of ours, and to cross one payment for all the sins of all the world. One time came back from the dead. And anybody he saves today, he never has to save him tomorrow.
He saves you one time because that’s all the saving you need. And when he gives you eternal life, he only has to give it it to you one time because if He gave you eternal life, after a hundred years would you still have it? What about a thousand years? As Willie Jane says, I don’t think I’ll live that long. I’ll tell you the story one of these days. But anyway Christ came back from the dead and says, would you believe I did it for you?
Eternal life is the gift of God. Best news in the world. Let’s pray, shall we? Whenever you head down, every act closed, nobody will look around. Especially if you’re watching by internet, understand that God loves you and paid for your sins. And all he wanted you to do to go to heaven is believe that he did that for you. And if you’ll believe it and trust what he did, then he said he would save you. From hell, give you the free gift of everlasting life and you can know that you’re going to heaven when you’re dying.
And I pray that you’ll do just that. Father, we are thankful so much for your blessings. Thank you for this time together and the study of your word.
