God hates divorce. People don’t always do everything God says. is to be a union and don’t we often say for better or for worse? Now why would we say that? I mean there’s no way it’s going to get worse, right? It’s sickness and in health but we’re always going to be healthy, aren’t we? Richard for poor, well we’re always going to get richer, right? So we always live with the hope of of everything getting better and healthier and more money, and tomorrow’s a brighter day.
And so sometimes these dreams become nightmares, kinda reminds me of the guy that went to bed with two bells of hay, and one of the fewest nightmares. That was pretty bad, that was pretty bad, isn’t it? Don’t clap, David got the sound fixed yet pick it up. But now get this. If the husband be dead, she is loose from the law of her husband. Now, verse 3. If then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adultress.
But if her husband be dead, she is free from that law so that she is no adultress, though she be married to another man. So, well, how would you explain it? I intend to. Now, according to the story, it’s an illustration of law and grace. In other words, we are under the law, we’re under the law. Christ comes and demons from the law. So I died to the law. So that means the law hath no more dominion over me.
And that’s why in chapter 6 and verse 14, we are not under the law. We’re free from the law. Now, here’s Jesus Christ. I can now become His bride. I can be married to Christ. But you can’t have two living wives or two living husbands. You’re not supposed to have two living spouses. In the words, if you’re You’re married, you can’t have two wives, one in my ex and my ex and my ex and my ex. Or two men, well there’s my husband and there’s my ex and my ex and my ex and that’s not supposed to be.
Now, would people because we don’t do what God says to him, because of sin and hardness of heart, people do pretty much whatever they want to do? They break their vows. Now, so if you understand the illustration God uses, when you and I understand this, here’s a woman. See the woman right here? She’s married to this man. But she wants to be free from this man. But she’s bound by law. She can’t leave this man. Well, how can she be free from this man?
Well, one is he can die. See how simple that was? Or she can die. So you begin to pray Lord take her home. No, no, no, no. So you can pray that God take this one home, but you don’t feel good about that, would you? No, you wouldn’t. So now, which one is going to die? Whichever one dies the other one can get remarried. And there’s no question, there’s no problem. Death ends the marriage. And so if a woman is married to this man, She’s bound by her husband until he’s dead.
But now when you associate that with the law and we’re under the dominion of the law, well then how can I ever get free from the law? Well all I have to do is wait for Mr. Law to die. And when he’s dead, I’m free, but there’s a problem. What is the problem? Mr. Law can’t sin, and if he can’t sin, he can’t. He can’t die. You’re stuck. He can’t die. How would you like to be married to a man that you’re only way you can be free, but he can’t die?
And that’s the only way you can be free is him to die. Wouldn’t that break your little heart? Expect when you see somebody else you want to marry. Duh. And that’s why the Bible talks about do not covet another man’s wife or don’t covet another woman’s husband because you’re desiring something you can’t have. But anyway we’re gonna move right along into this illustration. So here’s the law and you want to be free from the law and the only way is for him to die but Mr.
Law he won’t die. So what’s the only other alternative? You have to die. There is no other way. You have to die. So Christ who is Mr. Love, He comes on the scene lo and behold and He loves you. And He sees that you are under Mr. Law and Mr. Law doesn’t love you. And He sees that you’re condemned and you’re going to die because Mr. Law has no compassion. Mr. Law has no forgiveness. He has no grace. Mr.
Law has no mercy, he’s raw. And Mr. Love over here loves you. So what can Mr. Love can’t do anything for you? Ah, an idea. He is going to be born into this world under the law. Fulfill all the righteous demands of the law. So Jesus comes and lives for 33 years and never offends the law, never breaks the law. And all those things that those Pharisees said, well, he did this on the Sabbath, Dad, he broke this and he ate food without washing his hand, nasty, nasty, nasty, wait a minute, he never broke the law.
He was perfect. So the law can’t touch a perfect man. Mr. Love didn’t have to die. So what he did to satisfy the righteous demands of Mr. Law, he took all the sins of all the people and placed them up on him and then the law killed him. God smitten his own son. So he paid for the sins of the whole world so that he could redeem us from the curse of the law, but he can’t do it against you will.
So Christ comes back again from the dead and anybody under the condemnation of the law if they will believe that He did this for them. There’s nothing they have to do. No promises they have to make. All they have to do is accept the payment He made for them because that payment He made was for their sins. Why was I going to die sins? Why was I going to help sins? He did something about the sin problem. So He pays for the sin, satisfies the law.
That’s the word propitiation. God was satisfied, the law sought it satisfied, Christ was satisfied, and He wants us to be satisfied. But if you’re not satisfied with what He did, then you’ll try to earn your way by your good works and try to add something to it. That was wonderful Jesus, but let me help you out a little bit. No, the payment has already been made. So whenever you accept Christ as your Savior, Then his death that he died on the cross became your death.
So that’s why Christ says you When you believe on him you were crucified with Christ and once you’re dead Mr. Law can’t touch you You are free from the law So that now because you are free from the law You can be married to another but remember this under the law you can’t get this person to promise to turn from his sins. Because if you’re still under the law, I don’t give which way you turn, you’re still under the law.
You don’t got to get this person to dedicate their life to Mr. love. Why? Because you can’t commit to another man you’re married to this one. A woman who’s married to the man has to commit herself only to her husband. She’s not free to love any other man. She’s trapped, whatever you want to say. This is the way it is until death do you part. Do you think marriage is a serious business? Marriage is serious. It’s not a game.
And so now that’s why he makes the statement. Now look in verse two one more time, verse two. For the woman which hath a husband bound by the law to her husband as long as lives. But if the husband is dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. How can she be free from her husband? He has to what? He has to die. Do you see any other options in here? There aren’t any. Verse 3, so then if, while her husband live it, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adultress.
But if her husband be dead, she is free from that law so that she is no adultress, though she be married to another man. So if he dies, then the other one is free to remarry. So that’s why when you see this, here’s the woman. She’s married to this man. When this man is dead, then she can go free, and she’s free to remarry. But let’s say, for example, in the illustration, it has to be her that dies. So if she was to die through the payment Christ made, now she’s free to be with Christ.
Why should she then, once she has been free from this first husband, that’s why you’ll find in the Bible, in the New Testament, for her to go back to the first husband is an abomination of God. It’s an abomination. It’s a wicked thing for this woman to go back to the first husband if she’s ever been touched by another man. She’s ever been married to another man. She can’t go back to the first husband. That’s the Bible, that’s the law.
So look at the reasoning that God uses here. And verse four, looking verse four. Wherefore my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the what? See, I didn’t make this story up. I didn’t make up the illustration. God did. He put it right here in the Bible. He says, you have become dead to the law by the body of Christ. get that we should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruits unto God.
All right, see here? We’re free from the curse of the law. We died. Once you’re dead, the law cannot touch you. Now, if you go back under the law, then you are saying I’m still condemned, I’m under condemnation and I have to try to get free again, which you couldn’t do before and you couldn’t bring forth the fruits of righteous. You couldn’t perform the works that God wanted you to perform because of a sinful nature. So now he says this, in verse 4, look at the last part of verse 4, he says that we should bring forth fruit unto God.
Now that you’re free, you and the Lord, you dedicate your life to Christ. See, after you are free from the law, now God says, depart from iniquity. And He says about us becoming vessels fit for the master’s use. Now, between me and Christ, we’re supposed to bring forth fruit. It’s like a woman been married to a new man, a perfect man, and God wants children. And she, all the people we ever lead to Christ, they’re born perfect. Every person you lead to Christ is born perfect.
Every child we have in the flesh is born as a sinner. True? But if I lead somebody to Christ, they’re perfect. I was born in the God’s family, 1960. I was born perfect. You didn’t know that? It’s like what does a perfect person look like? because in Christ my new birth is perfect in Christ. Now why should I now that I am made perfect in Christ? Why should I want to go back or a woman go back to her first husband?
Why go back to this first? God said that’s an abomination. For a saved man to go back under the law is like committing spiritual adultery. A A woman who is free from her husband, mares another, she can’t go back to this husband, that is adultery. And if she does it and she has two husbands, she’s committing adultery. That’s why that’s not to be. So here you have a good illustration laid out here in God’s word, explaining law and grace.
But that’s not all, look in verse five. In verse 5, for when we were in the flesh, the motions of sin, or the passions of sin, the lust of the flesh and all that, which were by the law did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto what? In the flesh, all we could do is bring forth works of the flesh, and the law condens anything not perfect. But now, see in verse 6 those two words, but in contrast, but now we are delivered from the law.
If God’s Word says we’re delivered from the law, Why would you go back and become a slave to the law? Does that make any sense? Now that I’ve been set free and I have eternal life, why should I develop in my mind a thought process that says, I’ve got to try to earn my salvation and keep my salvation by my good works. Now, instead of me living as a free man, I’m living as a slave, as a bond to the works of the flesh, trying to save myself.
I couldn’t do it before. Why do I think I can keep myself saved now? Because while I go to church and I release the Bible and I pray and I do all the good things. But I’m trying to do my best. But should my salvation, now my eternal destiny, be dependent upon the continuation of my good life? What if I don’t have this good life? Well then I shouldn’t make it. And I got questions and I got, God says that’s an abomination.
That is spiritual adultery. And you’d be surprised how many people are committing this spiritually. And they have dishonored the one who’s set them free. Now that I belong to Christ, I have no desire to go back to that old sinful nature and lead and control and run my life. See that old sinful nature that you have, that’s what he’s talking about, that’s the flesh. The new birth, that’s the Spirit. You don’t want to put this under this. God says you’re in the spirit.
Now, have dominion over the flesh, dominion over your sinful nature. Never the other way around. You get a chance, you read the sixth chapter of the book of Romans, and you’ll see when it talks about yield the, therefore your members of righteousness and fulfill the works of righteousness what God wants. All right, look back here in your notes. So right here at number two in your notes, I have been crucified with Christ. This is a positional declaration in that the believer is dead to the law and no longer under it.
It is past tense. It is an abomination for the wife to return to the first husband after she has remarried. It is impossible when the first husband law has died. So when you’re free, you can’t go back. In other words, if the man has died, how do you go back to the first husband? He’s dead. I am dead to the law. Don’t exist. It’s my mind. I don’t get up every morning. I’ve got to keep the 10 commandments today.
No. I think positive. I think about all the things God wants me to do, not that God doesn’t want me to do. And you’ll find a better way to live. Now look at number three there. Nevertheless, I live despite being crucified with Christ. The fact remains that Paul was still alive. His physical existence has not been changed. When he says, oh, wretched man, what’s the words that are missing in here? Chapter seven, let me just read that to you.
Where he made the statement in verse 24, oh, wretched man, that I used to be, oh, wretched man that I am. You see, this here, flesh of ours, still an old wretched man. Who shall deliver me from this wretched man? Well, only the Holy Spirit, by you walking in the Spirit. And that’s why he says in verse 25 of chapter seven in the book of Aromity, that I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind, I myself serve the law of God and with the flesh, the law of sin, my flesh nature, my old sinful nature, will always serve sin.
I have been set free. don’t let it have dominion over your life. Now, look at number four in your notes there. And the life I now live in the flesh, I live by the faith, live by the faith of the Son of God, as opposed to living by the law. They were trying to put these Christians back under the law. Well, that means they really don’t understand the law. Now, let me show you that looking in the book of 1 Timothy in chapter one, 1 Timothy 1.
There’s an interesting verse that’s found here. And look what he has here. In verse 7 of chapter 1, 1 Timothy 1, look in verse 7. And look what the law is so that you’ll understand who is supposed to be under the law. And verse 7, desiring to be teachers of the law. There was something like that and God told them to watch these fellows. Neither what they say nor where up they affirm in other words. They don’t know what they’re talking about People who try to put you on about they don’t have a clue what they’re talking about They don’t understand the power of the gospel.
The set is free from the curse of the law Verse 8 for we know that the law is good There’s nothing wrong with the law the law is perfect. It doesn’t know the law What was wrong with the law was that man wasn’t able to keep it. Man was the problem, not the law of God. But the law revealed the weakness in the man so that the man would understand he can’t save himself by the law. Look in verse 9, knowing this, that the law is not made for what?
When you trusted Christ as your Savior, you became a righteous man. You became a perfect man in Christ. You don’t take the newborn perfect child of God and put him under the law. The law was not made for him. But it does say this. Now look at the rest of it. but for the lawless and the disobedient. So whenever you try to put a person in a law, look what you’re trying to put them under. For the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and for martyrs and martyrs and murders of mothers, for men’s slayers, for horn-mongers, for them that defiled themselves with mankind, for men’s dealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine, according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, the blessed God which was committed to my trust.
And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who hath enabled me for that he counted me faithful and put him into the ministry who was before I was everything that I wasn’t supposed to do and to be. And in verse 14 and the grace of our Lord was exceeding the abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. Then he says, this is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation. For everybody to accept Christ Jesus came into the world to save what?
Everybody who was under the law. So if you get saved, he removed you from the law. So to go back to the law, then you’re admitting I’m still a sinner, still unsaid. And what Christ did was all in vain. God forbid. And this is a good verse when he makes a statement here in verse 16. He says, how be it for this cause I obtain mercy that in me, the first Jesus Christ might show forth all long suffering for a pattern to them which you’d hear after and you ought to unline these words.
Believe on him to life everlasting. Look how bad we were. But if I’re in verse 11 talks about the glorious gospel, the glorious gospel means a gospel that can make a person ready for glory. A gospel that can make you perfect, the very moment you trust Christ as your Savior. The day I trusted Christ as my Savior, I became perfect. And I’m fit for glory. Could God have taken me home the very day I trusted the Lord? And not have been perfect.
Well, I still am. I’m ready to go for the last 58 years. I’m ready to go any moment by because I haven’t changed. My new birth is still perfect. My own nature is still bad. That hasn’t changed neither has any nature changed. My old sinful nature has never changed and my new birth has never changed. And one of these days I’m going to leave this whole body here. You can have it. You can do anything you want with it.
If you’re like all my curly hair, you can have that too. But see the last few words of that verse. Believe on him to life. I’ve ever had. How do you get everlasting life? Believe it on him. The law did not do any of that. The law only reveals all these people that are under the law. And there’s not one righteous man under the law. the only way you can get righteous is you have to be delivered from the curse of the law.
And God gives you his perfection, his righteousness. Well, let’s close with that one last verse there in Galatians in chapter 2. You probably didn’t know that had another verse there. Look at that last verse. I do not frustrate the grace of God for if righteousness comes by the law, then Christ is dead in vain. I’m dead to the law. The law can’t touch me. And that’s why sometimes I think it blows people’s minds when I make a statement like, I can’t go to hell if I tried.
I know that sounds very boastful, but is it true or not? I can’t go to him. The way I live cannot affect my destination. is that a true statement though? Yes. I can live like the devil and still go to heaven? Yes. Well you don’t deserve it. What does grace mean? See in people’s minds they still, you’ve got to deserve it. You’ve got to be better not to go to heaven. I’m a sinner saved by grace and his death from my account was not in vain because I believe that he He did it all for me.
And there’s other things on here you can read the notes further if you want to. Look up here. This hand represents you and me and the wallet represents sin. We all have sin on us. God loves us. He hates our sin but He loves us. And for us to pay for sin is eternal separation from God in a literal fire burning hell. We need to be saved. I don’t need a way, sure. I don’t need a trailblazer. I need somebody to keep me from going to hell.
And God says to go to heaven, you have to be perfect as righteous as God, no sin. But we can’t save ourselves because we’re all born on the law. We have all sin. We’re all guilty. And when we die, we’re executed. And we can never deliver ourselves. This end represents Jesus Christ. He’s the Lord God in the flesh, He came into this world. This is Mr. Love. He came into the world to take our place, to take our place, take all of our sins, to deliver us from this law that we could not deliver ourselves from and die in our place and come back from the dead and said, the only thing we have to do to be free from the law is believe He did it for us.
that Mr. Love loved you enough to deliver you from the curse of the law. And once you’re delivered from the curse of the law, you can never go back under the law again because you got free by death. You can’t go back. You can’t go back. It’s impossible. And those who are trying to put you back under the law, they’d understand what they’re saying and what their teachings according to 1 Timothy and chapter 1. Let’s pray, show him. With his bow nice clothes, no one looking around.
I pray that all you that are here tonight have already trusted Christ as your Savior, but I never know for sure I pray that you have. If you’re watching by internet right where you are, I want you to know God loves you and paid for your sins. And if you’ll trust him, he’ll give you a free gift everlasting life. You can be delivered from the curse of the law. Yes, your body is still going to die because it’s the flesh and it’s under the law.
But your new birth, born of God, can’t die. You’ll be a child of God for all eternity. If you’ve never trust the Lord, I pray to you will. And right on the screen it says, yes, I’ll trust Christ as my Savior. I pray that you’ll do that. But it has about nine clothes in one arm here in the auditorium. And it says, yes, I will trust Christ as my Savior. I want to be certain, positive I’m going to heaven when I die.
If you’ve never done it before, would you do it right now? Would you just slip your hair very quickly and put a red back down in with it all? Our Father, we are thankful and thankful so much that you did so much. We don’t understand all these things, but maybe a little bit a little We pray that it’ll become more real to us That we should serve you to live by the faith of the Son of God who love and gave Himself for us Father, we ask your blessings upon this coming week.
There’s so many things we’ve worked so hard. We want to see some good results who wants to do some great fruit. We ask your blessings in Christ and we pray.
