Salvation is not because of discipleship. You’re saved because you believed on Him. Once you believe on Him, God says, if you’ll continue in my word, and that’s why he makes this statement, if you continue in my word, then are you my disciples? So you started off right. You trusted Christ the Savior, you dedicated your life to serve the Lord, you wanted God to use you, and you loved Him, and it didn’t make any difference what you had to go through.
All the grief that you have, the problems that you have, and you’ll have them all the days of your life. But never let anything come between you and your love for the Lord, because Jesus let nothing come between him and his father or you and me. The thing that was separating us, he took care of and paid for all the sins of the world. And so now he says, you are my disciples. But does God want you just to say, well, I used to serve the Lord, but I don’t anymore.
Do you think he wants you to continue serving them all the days of your life? Is it all right to say, well, I used to love the Lord. I just don’t love him as much as I used to. Why not? I believe as we grow in the Lord that we should grow in our love for the Lord. And that’s why he says in verse 32, and you shall know the truth, because if you’ll continue in his word, you’ll know the truth.
And in chapter 17 talks about those that want to do the will of God shall know of the doctrine. In other words, those who want to know and do the will of God, you can know it and you can do it. So he says, and the truth shall make you free. Free from what? Down in verse 34, from being the servant of sin. So as a child of God, you begin to study the word of God, continue in the word of God, and you will not be a slave to your old sinful nature.
And God will bless you because you made the right decision, the wise decision. Now, I want you to look there in your Bible to John 14. John 14. And look what he’s saying to these believers, something to encourage him because he’s going to be leaving him and they’re going to be heartbroken and they’re going to have their time of sorrow, but he says that sorrow is going to be turned into joy. So he says in verse 1, let not your heart be troubled.
Why? Because it’s going to be troubled. But you don’t have to stay that way. We see a lot of things, we experience a lot of things, we don’t understand it all, but don’t let anything that that happens to you, cause you to question the love of God because it’s hard to serve somebody and obey somebody when you don’t believe they really care about you. And so what the devil does is work on your mind trying to get you a question and doubt the love of God.
So let not your heart be troubled. You believe in God, believe also in me. In my father’s house or many mansions, if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. You may have a reservation today, but you might lose it tomorrow, but you can get it back the next day. Then you might lose it the next day, but you can get it back the next day. No. When he makes a reservation for you, I believe it’s because he knows you’re coming.
So he says, in my father’s house on many mansions, if it were not so I would have told you, I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto my son that where I am, there you may be y’all show. I believe that tells me also that in spite of everything it goes on and all the troubles that we may have, he’s gone to prepare a place for us, a mansion for us.
And he’s coming back because he says that where I am, there you may be also. In other words, he loves me enough not only to pay for my sins. He keeps me out of hell, but he wants me to be with him forever because of how much he loves us. us. And the thing is, we haven’t done anything worthy of His love. That’s one thing we cannot quite figure out. But He makes the statement in verse 5, Thomas said to him, Lord, we know not whether they’ll go, how can we know the way?
Jesus said, I am the way, the truth and the life. No man comes unto the Father but my me. Now you’ll notice in verse 7, and verse eight, it talks about the word no and known. In other words, have you been so long time with me and you don’t know that he that have seen me have seen the Father? Because whenever we go over to the book of 1 John, it will use that same terminology and you’ll know it’s not just that I know the Lord, but do you really know God?
Do you really know what it’s like to serve the Lord? Remember it, You don’t know the Bible until the Bible controls your life. You can memorize every verse in the Bible and not know the Bible until the Bible controls your life and permeates your thinking. You can know a lot of things about God, but until you walk with God and live with God and abide in the Lord, you don’t know the Lord intimately like you should. So notice what he says in verse seven.
for if you had known me, you should have known my father also. And from henceforth, you know him and have seen him. Philip said, in him, Lord, show us the Father and it’ll suffice us. Jesus said, in him, have I been so long time with you? And yet hast thou not known me, Philip? He that have seen me have seen the Father. And how sayest thou? Show us the Father. And so you read some of these verses and you’ll find out that But God got a lot of things for us more than just saving us.
He wants us to learn to love Him. And that’s why we always use that verse over in 2 Corinthians chapter 5 verse 14, because we are persuaded and convinced because of the love of God constraineth us because we thus judge that if one died for all, then all were dead, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves but unto him who died for them and rose again. So there’s a motivation there of why we should do what we should do.
Now take your Bible look in chapter 14 and look in verse 13 and 14. John chapter 14 verse 13 and 14. And notice there’s something else that he says here that is going to be a benefit to you if you’ll do one thing. And he doesn’t make you do it, but he wants you to do it. Evidently, it’s one of the greatest things God wants you to do. It’s not so much what you do for him as it is that he wants you to love him.
Because he said, if you love me, then these other things will take care of themselves. But if you don’t love me, you won’t do it. So in verse 13, and whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If, see that big old word, if ye shall ask anything in my name, I will do it. If you what? These verses are tied together. They don’t stand all individually. If He loved me, do what?
Keep my commandment. It means love Him and love one another. And our responsibility of loving God is revealed by our love for the lost person. Do we really love the Lord? When we say we love the Lord but we don’t love the gospel. Well you can’t love one without the other. You can’t love the gospel without loving Christ. And if you love him, then he says, serve me. As he told us anywhere in the Bible about us, talking to the lost man?
I think so. Now look what he says in verse 15, if you love me, keep my commandments. Now this commandment is not the 10 commandments under the Mosaic Law. If you look over there in chapter 15, look in verse 12, where he says, this is my commandment that you love one another as I have loved you. you So does God want us to love others as He loved us? That means we give our life for other people. You see, we don’t just give our life so we can just win the lost man, but we also give our life to try to help God’s children to go strong in the Lord.
This is why some of these guys that come down here to help teach in the college. They’ve given up so much to come down here just so they can teach them the people in the college. The love one another. What’s the best thing they have they can give you is their life, their time. They’re given their time and hopefully some of these kids will learn some of these lessons and when they go out on their own they’ll learn to give their time to reach somebody else.
I believe it’s a good thing to do. Now in chapter 14 I want you to look down there in verse 21, looking verse 21. Now he’s talking to his disciples so we’re not talking about how to be saved but in verse 21, he that half my commandments and keep of them, if there’s anything you have to do, then you know it’s not for salvation because it’s something that has to be on the continual basis. And keep of them, he it is that does what?
You ought to underline those two words in your Bible. He it is that loved man. In other words, if you cannot love somebody you can see you, how do you tell God you love somebody you cannot see. God says, if you love me, then love one another. Give your life for the purpose of trying to reach the lost man and trained to save men, to encourage one another. You see, if I love people, God’s people, especially, especially them of the household of faith, then I should try to challenge you and exhort you.
And if necessary, rebuke you because I care about you, you got to be able to Tell them the truth and teach them all the counsel of God as much as possible. So in verse 21, he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father and I will love him. Now this is more than just loving you enough to pay for your sins. This is talking about you’ll learn more about the love of God in so many other areas of your life that you never knew anything about.
And that’s when when he says, and I will love him in a special way, and will manifest myself to him. You see, you knew Christ as your Savior, you trusted them as your only hope of going to heaven, but now don’t you want to really know the Lord, get to know the Lord. And this is what he’s talking about. He needs to, I will manifest myself to the person who loves me. And so people who don’t love the Lord, enough to serve the Lord, will never know the Lord like they should have.
And then when they get to heaven, they’ll realize how much they forfeited in their life. What a wonderful thing it is to live your life knowing God loves me and I love Him. It’s stronger than any marriage bonds between a husband and a wife or you and your kids or anything else in the world. Nothing is as strong as that bond between you and God. if you love him, because you know he really loves you. Oh, you don’t have to love him, you still go to heaven because he loves you enough.
And that’s what he did for you. But there’s so much more to it. Then notice what he says in verse 23. Jesus answered and said unto him, if a man loved me, he will keep my words. Remember we’re talking about the disciple that’s continuing his word, continue. And my father will love him. And we will come unto Him and make our abode with Him. In other words, for you get to where you feel like I am living constantly every day in the presence of God.
I’m living with God. I’m walking with God. He’s my closest friend. And I’m willing to lay down my life for the best friend I’ve ever had. And that helps you to understand what He says in chapter 15 and verse 14. He says, ye are my friends, if you do whatsoever, I command you. But he also made the statement in verse 13, greater love hath no man than this, that a man laid down in his life for his friends. Do you love the Lord enough to lay down your life for him?
To surrender your life and not fight God, just be willing to do whatever he wants. Is ye a lot of the peace that you will have, the joy you will have, the confidence you will have, the bonus you will have, is nothing more than the revelation of, or I should say, the manifestation of your love for God. And you know he loves you. He’s already proved that. Now, the greatest thing you have to do is can you prove your love God, and it’s going to be by the things you do for the Lord’s, what you’re willing to give up, what you’re willing to let people say about you without your retaliation, getting mad and blowing off and all that.
Just, that’s why you’re like, that doesn’t matter. And not waste your time on things that doesn’t amount to anything at all. And then he makes this statement here, one more verse here, verse 24. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sins. And the word which he heard is not mine, but the Father which sent me. He that loveth me not. Do you think God in heaven knows whether or not you do love him or you don’t love him?
Think God knows. I mean the real love. Whether you really do or you don’t. Can you fool us? I mean, can I fool you? You fool me? Yeah, we can’t fool God. painful God. It is impossible. Now look at verse 31 of chapter 14, but that the world may know, the world that I love the Father and as the Father gave me commandment even so I do. Now did he say he gave us commandment? He said if you love me, do the same thing.
And as the Father have sent me even so sin die you.” So that’s what God wants us to do. Now in chapter 15 verse 13, which is a great verse that we’ve already given to you, it says, there’s greater love hath no man than death. There’s no greater way for you and I to prove that we love one another than by giving them our life, giving them all the time that you have to try to help as as many people as you possibly can, because you’re surrendering all that time that you could have done so many things, but you sacrifice, you give up stuff for the Lord.
Now look in chapter 17, chapter 17. Chapter 17, and look in verse 26, look in verse 26. This is the real, I believe, prayer that Christ made to the heavenly Father. And did you know that Jesus prays for you and me? He prays for us. He says so. And verse 26, and I have declared unto them, he’s talking to his heavenly Father. I have declared unto them thy name. And we’ll declare it that the love wherewith thou have loved me may be in them and I in them.
The greatest thing God wants in you is his love been manifested by the indwell and holy spirit. And you’ll find that in the book of Romans in chapter five and verse eight. He commended his love toward us and that why we’ll be yet sinners Christ. What? Died for us. So it’s a great verse to know. Now look in chapter 21, chapter 21 of the gospel of John. As you know, Peter had denied the Lord. How many times? Two times?
Three times. Three times. He said, I don’t know the man. I don’t know the man. I don’t know the man. Even cursed. And he had just said the night before. The very night. He says, don’t everybody forsake you? I won’t. You got the talking part done. Talking part C is the thing of all. You can always say, but can you do? So Christ was not here at this moment. In chapter 21 verse three, Simon and Peter says, I’m going fishing.
What was he doing when Jesus found him? Fishing. He was going back fishing. And what did the other disciples say? I’m going with you. Oh, he’s a leader. So he says, they said to him, we also go with you. went forth and entered into a ship immediately and that night they caught a whole bunch. How much did they catch? Nothing. That didn’t catch anything. You see, if you don’t serve the Lord and you know that you should, anything else you do in life, you’re going to come up empty.
It’s not going to be satisfying. You’ll spend the rest of your life chasing soap bubbles. And then he makes this statement there in chapter 21 verse 5, Then Jesus answered, I said to them, children, have you any meat? They answered him. Yes, we got a whole bunch. What did it say? No. Remember in John chapter four that the disciples had gone into town to Burger King, got them some sandwiches to eat. Jesus went to the well and they met a woman there, noom time.
The disciples came back. Jesus says, I have meat to eat that you know not of. In other words, there’s something else that’s satisfied better than the food that you eat. Something that’s better than anything else in the whole world. In other words, what was his greatest burden, the greatest desire that he had was catching fish. I have meat to eat that you know not of. So in verse 6 he told me, cash your net on the other side, on the right side.
They went, they were on the right side. left side. And everybody knows left isn’t good, even in politics. But anyway, one was right along. And ye shall find, did he already know what they were looking for? Yes. Did you know if you put God first in your life, that all the other things shall be added unto you? Read Matthew chapter 6. He says, seek the righteousness of God and his kingdom. And all these other things will be added to you.
You put God first and he’ll take care of all the rest of it. But you see people think they can get more if they just concentrate on everything else in the world and they’ll come up empty. So then he says there in verse 12 a song come and dine come and dine did you know that serving God is like coming and sitting down to a dining table and God’s got everything fixed for you. Everything’s prepared. The will of God He’s got it for you.
And if you ever read the 23rd Psalm, the Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. One for what if he’s your shepherd? And he’s going to lead you and guide you, protect you and supply everything that you need. And then at the end of it, he says, surely goodness and mercy shall follow you all the days of your life. So didn’t he get to end the verse 15? You know this was coming. I bet Peter knew this was coming.
I bet he didn’t want to talk about the elephant in the room. So he says in verse 15, so when they had dine, you see, he’d done done something wonderful for them. He done put some food in his tummy, gave him a successful little venture out there, you know. Simon, son of Jonah, love us thou me. You know, he never asked him, do you love the other disciples? He didn’t ask them, do you love the sheep? He just wanted to do do you love me?
Do you love me?” So he says there, Simon, Son of John, love us to me more, more than these. He said to him, Yay, Lord, down north that I loved thee. He said, feed my lambs. In verse 16, Simon, Son of John, love us to me. He said unto him, Yay, Lord, down north that I loved thee. He said unto him, feed my sheep. He said unto him the third time. I don’t know why he did it three times.
You got any clue? Oh, what did you do this three times. You think it could be because he had denied him three times? Good possibility, huh? Simon, Son of John, love us thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, love us thou me. And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things. Thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus said unto him, feed my sheep. See, he didn’t ask him, do you love me? It’s not so much though I have to love the loss.
Well if you love the Lord it will take care of itself. You want to reach people because you know God loves them. God loves them. God loves them. And because I love him I want to reach those because God loves them. And you don’t have to try to manufacture some self made hypocritical love. You can be real and genuine. I love the Lord and God loves them. And God wants me to go through whatever it takes in order to try to reach people and pay whatever price has to be done.
And so he told him, he says, you’re gonna grow old. You’re gonna grow old. But because you love me, I want you to do something for me, see in verse 19. Then speak, he’s signified by what death he should glorify God, because he said they’re gonna carry you where you don’t wanna go. And the last part of the verse, and when he had spoken this, he said to him, what’s those two words? You ought to underline him in your Bible.
It’s not just follow the Lord. He says, do you love me? Follow me. Because see, if you don’t love him, he says in the book of 1 Corinthians in chapter 13, it’s all sounding brass and tinkling cymbals. If you don’t love him, without charity. All the sacrifices without love is to no avail. And though I give my body to be burned, now I don’t mind these love ends and he said, but these cookouts, I don’t think I want. But the key is…
Will you now for the rest of your life, will you follow the Lord? But follow the Lord because you love it and nobody can make you love God. I’ve got a virtual and possible task. I can’t make people love God. And that’s why it’s so hard to motivate people. But if they learn to love the Lord, they’ll be motivated to do whatever it takes to serve God. But if they don’t love his like pulling teeth, everybody likes to have their teeth pulled right?
Not exactly. I don’t think so. Look up here. This hand represents you and me, the wallet represents sin. We have all got sin on us. God loves us. He hates our sin. Aren’t you glad God loves you? How old do you know he loves you? Well, he did something. See, the wages of sin is death. So it’s everybody’s sinned, everybody’s condemned, and we got a debt to pay. To go to heaven, we have to be perfect. It’s righteous as God.
No, and none of us are perfect. None of us are good enough. So we cannot save ourselves. We can’t go to heaven. It’s impossible. We cannot go to heaven. This end represents Jesus Christ. He’s God in the flesh. Came into this world because He loves us. You notice every time we do the wall of the hill, we come back, He loves us. He hates ourselves, but He loves us. He does, but our sin separates us from Him. So Jesus Christ, because He does love us, took all the sin of all the world, because He so loved the world, paid for our sins on the cross and came back from the dead.
And God said that if we would believe He did that for us, He would put this payment to our account, we go to heaven on what He did for us. We love Him because He loved us first, and He showed us what love was about. And so because He paid for our sins, came back from the dead and all he wanted us to do is believe it. And when we do, God gives us as a free gift everlasting life and we can know that we’re going to heaven whenever we die.
It’s the best news in the world. But after you trust Christ as Savior, He wants every one of us as His children to love Him. And that’s something that everybody has to decide for themselves. You see, when you love the Lord, the dedication of your life will be in direct ratio. to the caliber of your love. Your love a little, your dedicate a little. Your love a lot, your dedicate a lot. Your love them with all your heart. Give them everything that you have.
And that’s where your peace and joy in happiness and all that comes from. That’s why he says in 13, Chabby said, If you do these things, happy are ye. Happy are ye. It’s one thing to know the will of God, it’s nothing to do the will of God. He said, if you do these things, happy are ye. Let’s pray, shall we? With heads bowed nice and closed, and no one looking around, if you’ve never trusted Christ as your Savior, by faith alone in what Christ did for you, He’ll give you as a free gift to eternal life.
If you’re watching by internet tonight, understand this, God, yes, He does love you. He proved it by sin and His Son to die for you. And He loved you enough that you don’t have to love Him back, but He still loves you. And He paid for your sins, and will you trust Him as your Savior? Will you accept what he did on the cross for you? And if you’ll trust him, he’ll save you God, said he would save you, give you eternal life, and you can know that you’re going to heaven.
And on the screen it says, yes, I will trust the Lord. And I pray that you will. Follow with anchor again for your blessings, for all you do for us.
