Tonight I want to speak to you on the issue, the subject of the unpardonable sin. I’m any of you who have heard about the unpardonable sin. The sin that God will not forgive. So I want you to take your Bible and turn to the book of Matthew in chapter 12. Matthew chapter 12, you’d be surprised how many people will email me or even post it on some of the YouTube broadcasts that we have. always wanted to know, have I committed the unpardonable sin?
And they’re afraid that if they ever have, then they can’t be saved because God won’t forgive them. And you know God has to forgive you of all your sins. But what if I have committed the unpardonable sin? And then where God will not pardon me, he won’t forgive me. And so that concerns a lot of people. So here in the book of Matthew and chapter 12. This is on page 10, 13 in one of the church’s Bibles. So you need to know it because there’s people, if you ever talk to people or many people, they’re going to have the question sooner or later and you need to know how that you can answer that question.
In the book of Matthew in chapter 12, look in verse 31, wherefore I say unto you, all manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men. But the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. And whosoever speaketh they were against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him. But whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost is shall not be forgiven him neither in this world, neither in the world to come.” That sounds pretty dogmatic.
Now whatever it is. You want to make sure you haven’t done that, right? You want to know that I have not done that sin. Whatever that sin is. Well, I believe it needs to be looked at. So we’re going to come back here. So don’t lose your place here in the book of Matthew in chapter 12, but we’re going to kind of run around a little bit. So take your Bible and turn to of Acts 13. What ever the unpardonable sin is, it cannot violate these scriptures that we’re going to take a look at.
We’re going to take a look at about three or four scriptures, but whatever the sin is, it cannot go against the truth that’s found in these verses. So in Acts 13, look in verse 38, be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man, talking about Jesus, is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins. Now you don’t see anything added to that where it says, except the unpardonable sin. That’s not included. And by Him Christ, all that believe are justified from all things from which you could not be justified by the love Moses.
Now as the disciples went out into the world and they preached the gospel, the good news was that Christ died and paid for all sin and that whosoever believes would be forgiven of all sin. No exception. No exception. And you’ll notice in verse 39, and by Him All that do what? Believe. Believe. Can receive forgiveness of sin. So… All are forgiven when you believe. So if you’ll believe that what Christ did, He did it for you, and you accept the payment He made for you, then you are forgiven of all of your sins.
So that’s why in the book of Luke in chapter 24, He sent His disciples out and says, is going to all the world and preach the gospel and preach the forgiveness of sins. And there’s no exception to the rule. There is no, well, except for the sin of unbelief. It’s never added, it’s never included. In the book of Mark chapter three and in the book of Matthew chapter 12 is the only place that you’ll find that phrase, the unpardonable sin.
It is nowhere else in the Bible. So whatever it is, it’s got to have a good answer as to what is this unpardonable sin. Because the Bible says here that if we believe we are forgiven of all sin. Now, take your Bible in turn with me to the book of Acts chapter 10. Just go ahead and go pages back. And you’ll notice that there’s something mentioned here. Even in the Old Testament, the Bible says, the prophets witnessed, and this is what they said.
In verse 43, to him give all the prophets witness that through his name, whosoever believe it in him shall receive what? Remission of sins. So whatever the unpardonable sin is, if it’s included as one of the sins that you commit, then if you believe all sin is to be forgiven. So when it says, accept the unpardonable sin, I wonder what it is. Because here it says, God will forgive all sin by simply doing one thing, by believing. So if you trust Christ as your Savior, God has forgiven you of all sins.
And so if he forgives me of all sin, that’s why I can go to heaven because I don’t have any sins to pay for. He paid for all my sins. Now, looking Colossians in chapter 2, the book of Colossians and chapter 2. In the book of Colossians chapter 2, there’s a very interesting verse and it says there in verse 13, this is on page 1264. 1264 and in verse 13, this is what he says, and you being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh hath he quickened or made alive together with him, haven’t forgiven you what?
All trespasses accept the unpardonable sin.” That’s not in there. You only find it mentioned twice, Mark 3, and here in the book of Matthew chapter 12. So it must be nailed down to something in particular. So whatever it is, we often say, well the only sin that you can’t be forgiven of is the sin of unbelief because it says if you believe, you’re forgiven of all sin. So evidently somebody didn’t believe something that they should have believed. Now take your Bible and turn to the gospel of John, the gospel of John, and there is a verse there I want to show you, and that’s found in the book of John, Gospel of John, and chapter 20 on page 1144, page 1144 in an old Gopher Reference Bible or one of the church’s Bibles just right in front of you there.
So in John chapter 20 look in verse 30 and verse 30 says, and many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you might have life through his name. So the reason that God worked these miracles by the Holy Spirit through Jesus, because he says, I do all those things, You know that the Holy Spirit gave him the power to do he depended upon the Holy Spirit and he did all things that would please His Heavenly Father So here he makes the statement that you might believe that Jesus number one is the Christ and that means he was the one that’s supposed to come the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world and
The miracles that he did or the signs that he did was so that people would believe he is who he claimed to be And that if they’ll believe that, that believing on him, they could receive eternal life through his name. So the reason you believed in Christ was so that you could be forgiven of all your sins and receive the gift of eternal life. Take your Bibleline and turn back to the book of Matthew in chapter 12. In Matthew chapter 12, now look in verse 22.
Verse 22 is talking about a miracle that Jesus had done. The Pharisees did not believe that what Jesus did, he did it by the power of God. Understanding this, Jesus was born the king of the Jews. So in the book of Matthew, it says he was born king of the Jews and the wise men who came were looking for the king. It says, where is he to be born? They said in the book in the Old Testament, like a chapter 5 verse 2 in Bethlehem, Ephraim, where it says, and though thou bethle him Ephraim, though thou be little among the thousands of Judea.
Yet out of thee shall he come forth that is be ruler in Israel, who’s going forth and been from old to everlasting. The one that’s going to be born is eternal. Never had a beginning, never have an ending, but he is going to be born and he’s going to rule and reign. He is the king. And so he was born in Bethlehem. So at the right time, John the Baptist came on the same as the forerunner of Jesus Christ telling the people, get ready, the king is here.
The king is here, and the king here, that means that this Missyanic kingdom that they have been waiting for, the Davidic kingdom is going to be set up. So he kept telling them, the kingdom is at hand. It’s at hand. The king is coming. So what Jesus did in most of the miracles that he did, he did them publicly. And as he did them publicly, and many people, the common people heard him gladly, and they believed on him, believing that he was the Messiah.
Even when he asked his disciples, whom do mean say that I the Son of Man Am? It’s like asking who was buried in the grants tomb, or when was the war of 1812? Well, who do they say that I, the son of man am? And then finally, well, they said, hey John, the Baptist, sorry, he’s Elijah, one of the prophets, and he looked at Peter, and said, whom do you say that I am? He said, thou art the Christ, the son of the living God.
And so he says, upon this rock, this truth, I will build my church, upon this truth. He didn’t say that Peter was the rock. He was a pebble, but Jesus is the petri-rocked. Now, there is a difference. It’s a play on words, but Jesus was the one they were looking for. But when they came a question or doubts, he says, the gospel is preached to the poor and the death can hear and the blind can see. can see. The lame can walk.
Those were the credentials of the Messiah. So by doing the miracles that he did was so they would be convinced and especially the leadership of Israel. The representative as the nation of Israel would believe that Jesus Christ was the Messiah. And as the Messiah, He was the King. And He had a right to the throne. Because of all these miracles that He did, they could not deny the miracles. So they denied the power of those miracles coming from God.
They denied that they were the works of the Holy Spirit. And so therefore they said that what Jesus did, because they could not deny the miracles, He said, he did it by the power of Beelzebub, the prince of demons. Did it by the devil himself. So now look there in verse 22. Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind and dumb and he healed him. In so much that the blind and the dumb both spake and saw.
And all the people were amazed and said, it’s not this the son of David. Now here he’s talking about is the son of David. in verse 32, he’s talking about as the son of man. He had the right to the king, be the king, because he was the son of David. He was in the right line. He was the right person and he was proven his apostleship and his messiahship. By the simple fact he was able to do these miracles that no one else could do.
That said him a part has been very unique. But they said that you didn’t do that by the power of God. You did it by the power of the devil. Now notice what he said in verse 24, and when the Pharisees heard it, they said, this fellow doth not cast out devils, but by beels above the prince of the devils, and Jesus knew their thoughts. Sudden to them, every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation. So in other words, if this is the kingdom of the devil, and the devil gave me power to cast out the devils, then he’s doing the very opposite of what he should be doing.
And the only way that if I worked for the devil and cast out demons, then you Pharisees, how did your sons cast them out? So he’s saying, it’s either legitimate and I am of God, or I’m of the devil and so are your people that are castin out the demons. And it wasn’t because the devil was doing it, it was because they really did have the power of exorcism to cast demon out. Now get this. And if Satan in verse 26 cast out Satan, he’s divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand?
And if I, by Beelzeboth cast out devils, by home to your children cast them out, therefore they shall be your judges.” Remember, he answered these questions because he knew what was in their mind. He knew their thoughts. So he’s able to answer the questions that they never even asked, except in their mind. But in verse 28, but if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is coming unto you. And so he says, the kingdom is at hand.
I am the king, I am the Messiah. These are my credentials. But as a nation of Israel and the leaders in Israel, they rejected the credentials that he had the right to be the king and that he was able to do the miracles that only a man of God would be able to do. So they did not credit his power to do these things to the Spirit of God but to the devil himself. And so they did not believe.
Now why was Jesus producing these miracles in John chapter 20 when we read that you might believe that he is the Son of God, and that by believing you may have what? Life through his name. So if you do not believe that he is who he claimed to be, then you’re not gonna accept what he is going to do. You’re not gonna trust him. So as the leadership in Israel, the leadership as a nation rejected Jesus Christ as the king.
Up to this point, Jesus has done many, many miracles. Enough to prove who He was. He said who He was. Now chapter 12 is like a pivotal point because after this chapter 12, He starts in chapter 13 with the parables and the kingdom of heaven is like unto, and He says as this and that and the other there’s a whole bunch of things that we won’t get into tonight. But that was the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven because they rejected the king.
Jesus let them know the kingdom is taken away from you and there is nothing you can do about it now. It’s like it is too late, it’s over. And now he’s talking about the Gentiles. And in comparison, if you’ll look there in chapter 12, look what he says in verse 38. He says in verse 38, then certain of the scribes of the Pharisees answers, and Master, we would see a sign from them. But he answered in the son of them, an evil and adulterous generation, seeketh after a sign.
But there shall be no sign given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights the whales belly or the great fish, even so shall the son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the year. The only sign you’re going to see after this as a nation is going to be that sign. Now that doesn’t mean that there weren’t some more miracles after this, but they were individual miracles and it was for individual people to believe and trust in the Lord.
Before this, he was doing these miracles to the nation of Israel, but afterwards he says, tell nobody, tell nobody, tell nobody. And there was a reason for that. Because as a nation, they had rejected the king, rejected the kingdom. And that’s why he says, this generation, and he mentioned this generation twice, he says, you have put it away from you. This is as a nation, unpardonable sin. It’s been prophesied for 1500 years. The Messiah is coming to set up His kingdom.
And now He’s here. He has proven who He is. And the nation of Israel has rejected their king. So they rejected the kingdom. And that generation, He says, there’s Old Testament saints who would have loved have seen what you’ve seen and to hear what you have heard. But you’ve hardened your heart, your ears are dull of hearing. And you could have had this in your day. And he says in the book of Luke, they wished not who he was.
In other words, here’s God in the flesh. And he proved who he was, did things that only he could do and they would not believe on him. they would not believe it. And so their unbelief, they accredited his miracles that were done by the Holy Spirit to the devil himself. Individually, any Jewish person can trust Christ as Savior. But as a nation, I believe that mainly is the unpardonable sin for that nation because the kingdom was taken away from them and has been projected into the future and it’s still coming.
But those people at that time will not have any part in it. Now look what we have here in verse 41, verse 41. Now he refers to two incidents but both of these were about the Gentiles. See up to this point it was only about Israel, Israel, Israel. Then he compares and he says in verse 41, the men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation. Now this word, this generation, you ought to underline it because that’s a very important word.
This generation separates it from all the other generations and he’s talking about the people that were there. This generation and shall condemn it because they repented at the preaching of Jonah and behold a greater than Jonah is here. In other words, the gospel was preached to Nineveh. They were warned. They believed the message and a greater than Jonah is here in Israel and you won’t believe it. He was greater than Jonah. He was greater than the temple. And then he says this in verse 42.
the queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment. The queen of Sheba with this generation and do what to this generation, condemn it. For she came from the utmost parts of the year to hear the wisdom of Solomon and behold a greater than Solomon is here. In other words, they had less knowledge and believed. You have been given more knowledge and you still will not believe. So as an individual, yes, anybody can trust Christ as their Savior.
All sins can be forgiven, but remember this, everyone who has trusted Christ as their Savior is saved and cannot be guilty of the unpardonable sin because it was the sin of unbelief, but on the part of Israel mainly. We can apply that in many other areas God can save anybody who trusts the Lord. But as a nation, they rejected the King. Now Jesus is going to give them parables, and the kingdom of heaven is like unto and these subject changes.
And then later on they asked the question of the book of Acts, will thou at this time restore unto us the kingdom? Because they knew the kingdom is gone. There is no hope for the kingdom at that point, so they did not know. Now I want you to take your Bible and turn to the book of, well let’s go to it. Let me just tell you this stuff for the sake of time. You remember in the Old Testament in Numbers chapter 13 and 14, there were 12 spies that went into the land.
Remember that? Ten of them came back with what kind of a report? Good or bad? Bad report. And so they said, we had died in the wilderness. Well, we should have just stayed in Egypt. You brought us out here into this wilderness to die. And they complained about a lot of things. But Jesus, I guess you could say, the Lord told Moses, these people, the children of Israel, that generation would not go into the Promised Land. Has this happened before when they could have in 11 days they could have went into the Promised Land.
But because of their rebellion they said that the people in the land are like giants and they’re like grasshoppers in their sight and they were afraid and their fear contaminated the whole nation of Israel. But Joshua and Caleb believed we can do this. 40 years later, Joshua and Kaelin, we got to go into the land. And the younger generation under 20, but there was these people that for 40 years, they kept dying in the wilderness until they were all dead.
They were not going into the land. Just in other words, because of their unbelief. Now individually, anybody can trust Christ that their Savior have eternal but this was about entering to that land that God had promised that flowed with milk and honey and Because of their rebellion that didn’t get to go Turning the Bible to 2nd Kings and the Old Testament to the book of 2nd Kings 2nd Kings in chapter 21 chapter 21 and look in verse 1 You see there were some kings that God had that were not always obedient to the Lord Because of their rebellion, they led the children of Israel astray.
So when they went astray, God promised judgment upon them. And so He makes the statement here in verse 1, Manasseh was 12 years old when He began to reign. Rained 50 and 5 years in Jerusalem. Verse 2, He did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord after the abomination of the heathen, whom the Lord cast out before the children of Israel. So he raised up altars in order to worship Baal, many wicked things that he did.
And he says in verse 6, and he made his son pass through the fire and observed the time and used enchantments and dealt with familiar spirits and wisdom. Everything God had told him in the book of Deuteronomy not to do, he was guilty of doing. And God had promised that if you do these things, and if you live wickedly and you forget my ways and forsake my way.” He says, I’m going to bring in another nation and they’re going to take you into captivity.
You’re going to be taken out of the land. And there comes a time when God says, all right, I’ve warned you over and over again. Dead line’s over. It’s too late. The die is cast. You’re going into captivity. Nothing you say or do will change it. It’s done. You’ve been listening to Bibleline, a teaching ministry of Calvary Community Church Tampa, Florida with Dr. Ralph Arnold.
