Alright, this is lecture 19 for tonight. And so just for the college kids, just kind of give them a rough little idea. Let me ask you a question here. Allison, the Holy Spirit is an influence, power, or person. He’s a person. Now he has influence and he can have power. But remember the Holy Spirit is a person. All right, I’ll ask Connor. Connor, the power of the Holy Spirit in your life will be in direct ratio ratio to your performance so a proper understanding of Scripture, true or false?

True, you win the grand prize, whatever it is. I need to ask Donna a question for you. The Holy Spirit is our conscience or our comforter. Now you can have a conscience and not have the Holy Spirit, but the Holy Spirit is our comforter. Another question for you, Jungian. The Holy Spirit lives within us forever or walks beside us if we follow Him. Walk with us forever. The Holy Spirit leads us to witness or leads us as we witness, Connor.

As we witness. If you wait on the Holy Spirit to lead you to witness, you’ll probably wait forever and never, never, never. Just go ahead and witness. I don’t think you’ll witness to the wrong person. If you do, just ask God to forgive you. If you lead somebody to the Lord that you weren’t supposed to, just apologize and keep going, be alright. Alright John John I can ask you a question. How do you get a burden for souls? Pray continually accept the responsibility to teach, I’ll reach them.

You accept the responsibility lo and behold you got a burden. But if you can pray for a burden until you’re blue in the face and you can go down to the front and 50 church altar calls and ask God to give you a burden. He don’t give you a burden. He gave you a responsibility and I’ll go fulfill it. When you accept the job to do what God says do, you will have a burden. Devin, you may dodge the responsibility to reach souls, but it’s only for those who have the gift of evangelism, or you cannot dodge the consequences.

You can dodge the responsibility, but you cannot dodge the consequences. You may dodge the responsibility, but you cannot dodge the consequences of your failure. There’s a price to pay. Every great ministry demands your obedience. True or false. Trent, true. Why did Paul have a great heaviness and continuous sorrow in his heart? He was learning how to trust the Lord or because of his concern for his Jewish brethren who were not saved. Why did Paul have a great heaviness and a continuous sorrow in his heart?

He was studying Greek. That’s right. He was studying Greek instead of Hebrew. Because of his concern for his Jewish brethren who were not saved. Remember in the book of Romans in chapter 10? All right, on this one we had a brief review and that is the one on two Greek words, Praso and Poheo. And I’d mentioned that I I had a problem right after I trust the Lord, trying to get this guy to talk to him and boy, he tore me apart.

I thought I knew something, but I really didn’t know anything. I thought I knew the Bible, but I didn’t really know anything about the Bible. I just believe whatever it said, I believed it, but I didn’t know what it said. So I told him, I asked him, I said, are you saved? He said, yes, I am. I said, well, I’m. So am I. He says, so you’re born again. Yes, I’m born again. He asked me a question. He says, do you still sin?

I said, yes, I do. He says, then you’re not saved. I said, yes, I am. He said, no, you’re not. I said, yes, I am. So we got in a little argument. And he says, don’t you believe the Bible? I says every word of it. He says, if I showed you in the Bible, would you believe it? I said, sure, I’ll believe it. If it’s in the Bible, I’ll believe it. I can be born again, but you know, If I still sinned, he said, you’re not saved.

So anyway, I didn’t know anything about the Bible. And would you believe it? He showed me 1 John chapter 3 and verse 9. When he talks about whosoever is born of God, if not commit sin, for his seed remained in him, and he cannot sin because he is born of God. And so if you’re born of God, you’re not opposed to sin. Well, that’s what he was saying. That was blew my mind. I’ll have to admit, the King James didn’t help me much either.

Then I had people say, well, it doesn’t really mean that you won’t send, it just means you won’t practice sin. Well, everybody I knew was a pretty good expert at it. They didn’t have to practice. They were professionals. So I really didn’t understand that. So I finally found out about the two natures, and lo and behold, there it was. Whosoever is born of God, if not Christ is, it’s not the one of the flesh, it’s the birth of the Spirit.

So when you are born into God’s family by the Holy Spirit, that new birth is born of the incorruptible seed. It has no sinful nature. It’s born of God. God is your Father. It has no sinful nature. It cannot sin. It cannot sin. It cannot die. It lasts forever. Now I know how to explain that verse and I haven’t seen that guy since. And because see, it’s not like flesh birth, it’s my new birth that’s born of God. Who’s over born of God?

If not commit sin, he cannot commit one single life. And these two Greek words, and I got this right out of the strongton, of course, myself. But right down at the bottom you see the word poeio and praso. Praso, I just connect that with practice. It’s easier for me to do it. I have to have a way of remembering thing. So, praso, if you look at the last form there, perform repeatedly or habitually, thus different from poeo, which properly refers to a single act by implication to execute, accomplish, and blah, blah, blah, blah.

So one means to habitually commit, and the other one means not one single act of sin. Well when you go to 1 John chapter 3 and verse 9, it’s the word poeo means you cannot commit one single act of sin is not talking about practice sin or habitually commit. Now it can be in other places, there’s no problem with that, but in this verse it’s poeo and it means you don’t commit one single act. That’s the New Book. So you’re talking about the new nature.

Now look at in lecture 19, lecture 19 and I want to explain this to you because out of all the messages that I ever heard from Dr. A. Ray Stanford be signed to gospel. His message on the two natures helped me in my Christian life. I would say probably more than anything else. Because I knew now why I did what I did. I knew that I still had an old sinful nature. And I knew that if I walked in the flesh, it doesn’t undo my new birth.

And if I walk in the spirit, I knew it doesn’t undo my old birth. I got both of them. And so I got these two births with two different natures. One is, they’re both extreme. One doesn’t do anything good and the other one doesn’t do anything wrong. And I got both of these natures living inside of me and they both got desires. Contrary to each other. And that’s the battle that you will go through in your Christian life. So in verse, the memory verse that you have, Galatians 5, 17, for the flesh lust is against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh.

And these are contrary, the one to the other so that you cannot do the things that you would without the problem of the other one. You’re going to have this battle that goes forth in your life. So you have the flesh birth. Now look up here because I have to make sure you understand it. You follow me all the way. I’m not trying to start a fight with anybody. I’m just not just putting up the dukes, but I’m gonna let my arm right here represent our flesh birth.

This is when we’re born into the world. When you’re born into the world, you need to understand what God says about it. And so you look there where we have teach the two nature, the old and the new nature. Now everyone in here should be an expert on understanding the flesh nature. But you’d be surprised how that whenever you get saved, you say, well, the old nature is gone. Now I’ve had people say, well, it’s eradicated. The old nature is not eradicated.

You see that statement right there? Not one Christian is above sin. The old nature is not eradicated. In other words, it didn’t disappear. It hasn’t gone away. You still have an old sinful nature. You You still can commit every sin. That a lost man can commit. And that’s just the truth of the matter. Now, number one, we are sinners Romans 3 23. This is our picture of our first birth. This is how God sees us. Now we want to see ourselves.

We look in the mirror. When God sees us, He’s seeing us from His viewpoint and comparing to God, we have all sinned. We’re all sinners. and he says, and cannot enter the kingdom of God. Now look in 1 Corinthians chapter six. 1 Corinthians and chapter six. Now it’s an interesting scripture, scares a lot of people, but it doesn’t have to scare you when you understand what he’s talking about. So look there in 1 Corinthians in chapter six. And notice what he says in verse nine, verse nine.

He’s talking to the Christians there in Corinth. they are carnally minded. What that means is, is they are fleshly minded. Remember, if you’re spiritually minded, you mind the spirit. If you’re fleshly minded, you mind the flesh. So these Christians were minding the flesh, and so they were carnally minded, means fleshly minded. So he’s talking to a bunch of Christians who are not growing in the Lord, and so he keeps saying over again, don’t you know, don’t you know, don’t you know?

And evidently the answer was, No, they didn’t know. So he says in verse 9, no ye not that the unrighteous, now that’s the lost man. The believer is always considered to be the righteous. You have been justified. You are sanctified, pasteurized, and homogenized and all the rest of it. No ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God. That’s why when you’re born of the flesh, the flesh does not, cannot inherit what God has. You have to be His child.

Only His children inherit what the Father has. The lost men doesn’t have claims to any inheritance of any kind. So He says, be not deceived, neither at foreignicators or idolaters nor adulterers nor a feminine nor abusers of themselves with mankind, not thieves, covetous, nor drunkards, revolters, extortioners. None of these, these are evidences of sins of the flesh nature. You say, well, I never did that. Yeah, but I bet you there’s one of these you are guilty of. So these are the works of the flesh.

So you see, your sinful nature has a bad root. And that’s why you have bad fruit. Bad fruit comes from a bad root. So he says here in verse 10, shall not inherit the kingdom of God. This is the flesh in verse two. And such were some of you, but you are washed, you are sanctified, you are justified. Now this is in your new position. When you trusted Christ as your Savior, God gave you a new birth. Now you are justified, you’re sanctified, you’re set apart, you belong to the Lord.

That’s the second birth. The new birth is separate from the old birth. Never mix the two together. See what some people believe is this. Now see my left hand? This is your new birth. They believe this one is just the old one converted. You know you can take a garage and convert it into a living room. But when you do that then the old garage is no longer the garage. It’s a living room. So if you’ve converted into the living room, well where’s the garage?

It’s gone. So this is what most people are looking at. So if they don’t see the living room and they still see a garage, then they say, well you didn’t get converted. You really didn’t get changed. I mean you really didn’t get saved. So they’re basing it all upon this one birth and getting him totally changed. why they’re looking at this flesh birth and sin if they see any more of the works of the flesh. And so that’s what they judge it by.

But you’re smarter than that now because you’re learning that there’s more to it than meets the eye. Number two, we are not the children of God, the flesh. Now in chapter 9 of the book of Romans in verse 8 it says that is they which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God. So these are not the children of God. And they’re not the children of God. They don’t inherit the kingdom of God. Look at another scripture I think it’s good to look at.

Look in 1 Corinthians in chapter 15. 1 Corinthians in chapter 15. So when you were born into the world, you were born just like that. First Adam, you are a sinner by nature and you’re also a sinner by choice. You’re a sinner because you were born with that sinful nature, but then after you even know right from wrong, you still choose to do wrong. So you’re a sinner by choice and by nature. Not like this. In verse 49, he says, and as we have borne the image of the earthy, the flesh birth, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.

the new birth. Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God. This is why when you read the gospel of John in chapter 3, he says there was a man named Nicodemus, a rule of the Jews who came to Jesus by night and to him, a rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God, for no man can do these miracles that thou do except God be with him. And Jesus said, Boy, I’m impressed.

No, he says, unless you’re born again, you cannot see the kingdom of God, and unless you’re born, you cannot enter into the kingdom of God. So the kingdom of God is the spiritual realm. The kingdom of heaven we talk about as that stone, the physical upon the earth, and the land upon the earth here. God has promised us, we’re talking about spiritual things. So this is a new birth, and you must be born again. So he says, that which is born of the flesh, flesh and that would be one of the spirit’s spirit.

So there’s these two birth, flesh, spirit. John 3 16 is the answer to naked demons on how to be born again. And so we cover that for by grace or you say through faith. And that not of God is the gift of God not of works lest any man should boast and if it’s by works that means that the flesh birth has to produce the spirit birth. And the spirit birth cannot come from the flesh. That’s why he talks about flesh and blood cannot inherit eternal life.

It’s impossible. So God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have ever lasting life. So when you believe on Jesus Christ he gives you the free gift of everlasting life. He gives eternal life to the new birth not to the flesh birth. The flesh birth is still going to die. The new birth will not die. And so flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God. That’s why you need a new birth, a savior.

Now take your Bible and turn all the way back to the book of Genesis in chapter 5. Genesis and chapter 5. It’s the last book in the Bible if you turn your Bible upside down. Now this is the only place where you find it mentioned like this in the whole Old Testament. In the verse one, this is the book of the generations of Adam and the day that God created man in the likeness of God made he him and he goes on down through here and says all of this and then he had a son in verse three named Seth and he was made in his likeness and then he says in verse four and the days of Adam after he had He’d been gotten set for 800 years, and he’d be got sons and daughters.

That’s a long time. But anyway, in verse 5, and all the days that Adam lived were 930 years, and he lived forever. He died. Look what he says down in verse 8, and all the days of Seth were 912 years, and he died. And he died. Verse 11, and all the days of Enos were 905 years, and he died. And as you go down through here, it didn’t matter how long they lived, they all died because they’re in Adam and they all died.

This is the book of the generation of Adam. That’s the flesh birth. Now take your Bible and turn to the book of Matthew, the book of Matthew in chapter 1. That’s the first book in the Old Testament. Now look at the first book in the New Testament. Matthew chapter one, first book in the New Testament says, and lo and behold, there’s a phrase that looks almost like what we just read. Look in verse one, the book of the generation of Jesus Christ.

And it mentions the son of David and Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, or Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, known down the line and all the way down through here, but there’s one thing that you don’t find mentioned here. There’s no deaths recorded. This is, I believe, a spiritual line. This is a different line altogether. And when you’re born into God’s family, see, he has a book and that’s the book of life. And in the Old Testament, we have that book of the living, but you’re all gonna die.

And so that’s why still there’s still these two books. And you’re gonna be judged out of the book of the living. And then that’s why in the book of Revelation, whose names were not found in the book of life. It was cast into the lake of fire. That’s the first, but, but not the second birth. The only way you get your name in the land book of life is by believing and trusting Jesus Christ as your Savior. That’s the only get the new birth.

So, now that you understand that, look in Colossians in chapter three, the book of Colossians. And we’re going to look at some of the flesh things. This is the description of what that old nature you have, what it’s like. And so he makes a statement, and I want you to see this first of all, see there in chapter 3, but look in verse 1. Because see, once you trust Christ as Savior, God gives you a new birth and the Holy Spirit indwells you.

And now God says, because you have been crucified, means you died and paid for your sins. Christ did it for you, and he put it to your account. Just like you had done it. And you were buried with Christ, and you have been raised with Christ, and ascended with Christ. You’re seated in the heavenlies in Christ, because God sees you now as His child and His son. When you were born into the world, God saw you in Adam. Now God sees you in Christ.

So that’s why He makes the statement here in verse two. Now that you had been risen with Christ verse one, two set your affections or your desires on things that are above. So you have a flesh birth and you’re going to desire the things of the world. But now that you have a new birth, God says, set your desires on things that are above. Or you can set it on things below. You’ve got a choice. So as you live your life, you’re always battling between these two sets of desires.

Now, we don’t say so much as you feed a nature, but each nature has desires. My old sinful nature desires the lust of the the lust of the eyes and the pride of life. So if I satisfy those desires, they grow and the desires get bigger and stronger. And you take the desires that you have for the Lord. And if you start feeding those desires, then those desires will grow. Your whole Christian life depends upon which do you desire the most.

You’re going to live your Christian life on which desire overrides the other one. And that’s why you’ve got to do things that makes the spiritual desires stronger than the flesh desires. Otherwise, you will never have Christian victory in your life. You’ll always be defeated. You may want it, but you don’t want it bad enough to do what it takes to be strong. Why do you think I want people to come to church so they can feed those desires and become stronger.

Learn more of the Word of God because you need the new birth feeds upon the Word of God. The old man feeds upon the lust of the flesh. So some Christians try to satisfy both of them. So what you want to do is strengthen yourself. Now this is why when he says if you want to set your effect, these are choices. See God doesn’t make you set your effects and don’t things above. He doesn’t make you dedicate your life to the Lord.

He says, I’m here and this is what I got for you and this is what I want to do and I want to use you and then he lets you make the choice. And so if you want the best, then verse five says mortified. Mortified. Now if you’ve been scared so much that you, oh I was mortified. What you know, mortify is like a mortician and you see the, it comes from the same words and it’s also almost like death.

Well, that’s what he’s talking about. In other words, heal these desires of the flesh. Mortify, therefore your members which are upon the earth because you want to think about the things that are spiritual. And he says these things, fornication, uncleanness, and ordinate affection, evil can keep his friends in covetousness, which is ideology for which things say that wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience. Now, if you walk in the flesh, this is what he’s saying. This is what you’re going to have for your life.

Now is that what you want? And God, even your heavenly Father is going to chaste in. Disobedient children. So if you want God’s blessings, walk in the Spirit. So how do you walk in the Spirit? Well, you float through the air like a hand. No. Walking in the Spirit is as simple as just walking in obedience to the will of God. And you don’t have to get complicated. Just walk in obedience to the world of God. And do it because you want to.

Because you want God’s blessing. You say, well, I gotta do it for the right motive. Well, the right motive could be that God says to him, that’s why I’m gonna do it. That’s a pretty good motive, isn’t it? And get some of the feelings out of it because sometimes you’ll feel like, I know I just don’t feel like walking with the Lord today. I just don’t feel up to it. Now, just go ahead and do what’s right. Always do right.

And when you get down in discouraged, don’t do something stupid because you know you’re not gonna stay there. And then when you get out of it, you’ll wish you hadn’t had done what you did. Always do right. Even when you don’t want to do right, do right. Always do right. It’s always right to do right. It’s always wrong to do wrong. Anyway, look what he says down here in verse eight. But now he also put off all these, anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.

See, there’s things that God doesn’t want you to say. God wants you to guard your life. You see all those bad things and bad thoughts comes from that old sinful nature. God says, if you want to put on the new man, then you take off the old man. That’s spiritually speaking. It means to walk in the spirit instead of the flesh. Well, just look what it says in verse 10. And have put on the new man. Verse 9, lie not one to another, see you have put off the old man with his deeds.

In other words, here you are, you got these two natures. You want to walk after the old man or the new man. It’s a choice. And God’s gonna, he says, tell you, look, there’s consequences. You can dodge the responsibility, but you cannot dodge the consequences. So seek the Lord and do what God wants you to do. And as you go through here, you’ll notice what he says about the verse 10, and have put on the new man, which is renewed, get this in knowledge after the image of him that created him.

Now, the one who created this new birth, this spiritual birth, look what he says, renewed in knowledge, that comes from the knowledge of the Word of God. This is why you can never be a strong Christian outside of the Word of God. You have to study the Word. You that come to Bible college will be stronger than those who do not come to Bible college. Because you’ll know more of the Word of God, you’ll know more about His will.

You’ll know why you do certain things, you’ll know where those desires come from. And you know that you can have victory in your Christian life if you do thus and thus, and you know you’re going to mess up your life if you do thus and thus to feed the flesh. This is why these things are so important. This is your invitation to join us for our third Sunday dinner held in the Florida Bible College of Tampa building on the Calvary Community Church Campus.
