But anyway, as far as today goes, I want to give you a few things to think about. In the book of Romans, which I’ve been teaching on Sunday nights and Wednesday nights, but occasionally I will say something on a Sunday morning. That’s because I want to try to teach and then I give an overview. And then I do sometimes I give a little review and then a little bit something new. So anyway, I love the book of Romans. It’s one of the best books that I’ve enjoyed learning some things about the Lord and this thing we call salvation.
In the book of Romans, we have in chapter 1, 2, and 3, we have about the condemnation of mankind from God’s perspective. He lays us down this condemnation and it is thorough. God is very thorough. He proves his case. And then we have in chapter 4 and chapter 5, it talks about the justification of man, all that man in chapter 1 to 3 is condemned in chapter 4 and 5, how man can be justified. And then you have in chapter 6 and 7 and 8, kind of let us know about the sanctification that goes on.
Because see, we’re all condemned, then we can be justified, and then God talks about sanctification, how we’re supposed to live. When you get into chapter 9, 10, and 11, well, we often say that’s about the Jewish people, chapter 9, 10, 11, the past, present, and the future. And that’s very good. That’s very true. Chapter 12, well, pretty much to the end of the chapter we talk a lot about, the product of understanding and believing all of this. So first of all, I want you to take your Bible and go to the book of Romans in chapter 1, chapter 1.
Now we know that in the beginning God had a plan and He did not ask us for our input. He planted after the counsel of His own will, but God had a plan. Now God had a plan before He made the first man. We have proven that all mankind has sinned against say righteous and holy God. So that’s what the first three chapters is talking about. So you have it broke down a little bit about what the goal and the purpose was of God, the creator of the heavens and the earth, who created man.
And then you have on the justification of chapter four and chapter five about the work that Christ did. And then when it comes to the sanctification of chapter 6, 7, and 8, we have about what the Holy Spirit does and how He works in our life. So the scriptures are laid out in an awesome manner. Mankind could not have just sat down and figured it all out. God did that. And so if you’ll notice in the book of Romans in chapter 1, you’ll see a word that’s used all the way through here and I will not take time to go through all of them.
But just to show you a couple love them. You see down there in verse six, where it says, among whom ye also the called of Jesus Christ, to all that it be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints, grace to you and peace from God, our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all. And verse nine, for God is my witness. And as you go down through here, you find out the word God is used over and over and over and over again.
Now look there in chapter one and also notice where he says in verse 16, for I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ for it is the power of God. the gospel, the good news is the power that God uses to save a person. You want power of God in your life and use the gospel. Start telling people how to have eternal life and you’ll be surprised how it can change your life, but it changes the destiny of somebody else.
And so he says there in verse 17, for therein is the righteousness of God revealed. And then he talks about in verse 19, because that which may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has showed it unto them. And then he talks about the creation that he made. So this is about God and his role and the plan that he had. But God is showing how wicked man is. But man is wicked by his choice. you choose to do wrong.
You go through these scriptures and it tells you about God created. But man doesn’t want to believe in creation because creation means a creator. And a creator has to be God. So that means there’s nobody before him. So that’s why he talks about the Godhead. The Godhead means his deity. They can’t be anybody before God. They can be anything before him. He created all things. So he says here in verse 20, for the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly saying, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead so that they are without excuse.
So God takes these first few chapters and lets us know God sees all, knows all. He knows why people do what they do. And because of that, God says they are without excuse. No excuse. So it means that they’re going to be held accountable. Romans 14 gets into that. Every man will be held accountable. And what are they doing? Look what he says there in verse 24, where for God also gave them up to and cleanest through the lust of their own heart to dishonor their own bodies between themselves.
So God says it’s a dishonor. He says they’re the lust of the flesh. And so even though somebody wants to honor, no, that’s not honor. In verse 25, who changed the truth of God into a lie. Down in verse 31, where he says, without understanding covenant breakers, without natural effects and implacable, unmerciful, who knowing the judgment of God that they which commits such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
Therefore, in verse 1 of chapter 2, thou inexcusable, oh man, because all have seen God proves that this is true. So you go through here and you come to the conclusion that God knows what He’s talking about and God has judged the whole world those who had nothing more than the revelations of the Word of God and those who are, I guess you could say, see the creation of God so they have the power of reason and the power of revelation.
And And man has chosen to rebel against light, against truth. Man has a sinful nature and he twists the truth of God into a lie. And believe a lie and live a lie. And then there’s people who want us to accept their lie. I cannot accept the lie because it is a lie. It is not good. It is not good for a society. It destroys the individualist, the home destroys the church, destroys our government. It destroys our country. I had somebody mention this to me.
I’m just going to throw this out there because this doors are locked anyway. No. You know the rainbow colors. The rainbow is a beautiful thing. The rainbow was put in the sky by God to let you know that he made a promise and he’s going to keep his promise. What had he just done? He had just wiped out the world except those that were in the ark. Put a rainbow up there so you’ll remember, God said, I’ll not destroy the world again by fire.
But let you know that I did destroy the world because of their sinfulness. What did I say? Water. The next time by fire. But he did make a promise. See that’s the problem with a preacher got people that know the Bible. 95% of the churches around America that could have said that and they wouldn’t have known anything was on. But I did that just to check you out. So there’s nothing wrong with the rainbow. Nothing wrong with the colors.
God created them. And God’s the one that made the promise. And you get into the Revelation in chapter 4, a rainbow around the throne of God. And they have stolen something from the Scriptures and stole another good word which is gay. And there’s people used to talk about it, didn’t gay. I’m gay. But they didn’t mean what they mean today. Pride? No, it’s shame. And it’s a shame when our local governments honor something that’s a shame. I don’t mind them honoring a person because they are a person or a citizen of our country and they’re an American.
Lure the flag at half mass. But to raise a flag that represents the homosexual lifestyle which God condemns and every Christian not a condemn it and anybody’s got decency on a condemn it because it isn’t right and it’s not good. And I’m letting you know how I think about that. Romans chapter 3. Look now in verse 19. Now we know that what things were of the law said that said to them that are under the law that every mouth may be stopped and all the world may become guilty before God.
God has proven that all the world is guilty before Him. So this is the part that God plays. He has given a law, condemns the whole world. So there’s condemnation. But look what he says. That regardless of who you are, regardless of how bad you are, he says, in verse 10 of chapter 3, as it is written, there’s none righteous, no not one. And down in verse 23, for all have sin, and come short of the glory of God, all have sin, all of us are condemned.
In God’s eyes He says, there’s no difference. We’ve all sinned. So we don’t honor our sin just because we did it. We all get together and we’ll have a monument built to all of us who believe lion is okay now. There’s a lot of politicians running around doing a lot of lion. Now when you get into verse 21, we’re talking about from a different perspective about Jesus Christ and what He did. Because see, God has a plan and a purpose and what He does and the Son has something that He does.
So you’ll notice it’s all part of a master plan. Now you find there in verse 20, but now change in the subject. The righteousness of God without the law is manifested, been witnessed by the law and the prophets. Why without the law? they had the law for 1500 years and nobody could keep it. Nobody could earn their righteousness. Men has never lived good enough to save himself so that has to be changed. God has a better way and what he did was he promised that he was going to send his son.
So in the Old Testament though he gave the law, the law was to show you cannot save yourself and the law pointed you to Christ. So people were saved in the Old Testament looking forward to the Messiah being the payment for the sins of the world. And on this side of the cross we look back to the payment that’s been made. We’re both saved by faith looking to Christ. There is no other salvation, no other way for a man to be saved.
So he says here in verse 22, even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ. This is the first time we’re talking about Him now. And he says unto all and upon all of them that belief. So this is a way that a man can be justified. He is condemned. Now he can be justified. And so the next two chapters talks about how a man is justified, justified by faith in what Christ did. See there in verse 24 being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.
So this is a payment that He made so that we could be justified. Just as if I had never done anything wrong, just as though I’d never been condemned. That’s why in Romans and chapter 8 verse 1 there is no condemnation to those that are in Christ Jesus. So we have a wonderful layout plan and God has gone right by it and then you’re looking verse 28. Looking verse 28 of Romans and chapter 3 where it says, therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.
The law condemns. So how can a man be saved by faith and faith alone? So thou in chapter 4, you’re talking about this righteousness that God will put to your account if you will believe. Look in verse 5, chapter 4. But to him that work if not, but believe it on him that justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. So the very moment you believe on Christ, you were justified as though you’d never sinned. Born into God’s family, cleared.
This is what the payment Jesus Christ made, did for you and for me. When we accept that. So you look down there in verse 24. But this righteousness, he says, but for us also to whom it shall be imputed if we do what? If we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead. So he was delivered as a payment for our sins, came back from the dead, and said, if we would believe it, we would be justified.
So this is what you have in chapter five and notice in verse one, where he says, therefore being justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord, Jesus Christ. See, that’s where you’re justification because of what he did for us. And so you go through there and you have that. Now in chapter six, chapter six is a little bit different. It’s a whole new subject because you’re condemned and then you’re justified and now God’s talking about sanctification.
How should you live between now and the time you get to heaven? This comes from a verse in the Old Testament, the Habakkah chapter 2 and verse 4, the just shall live by faith. So you have here in the book of Romans the just shall live by faith. rest of your life. How does God want you to live? So he tells you about you have now been raised from the dead because of what Christ did on the cross for you.
His death, burial and red light put to your account. So we have this identification truth. You identify with Christ. You identify with Him in His death on the cross. You are crucified with Him. You You are buried with Him and you have been raised to walk in newness of life. You have been seated together in the heavenlies, Ephesians chapter 1 and verse 3. So God sees us in His Son and it’s a done deal and God sees us there.
But you and I see us here. So how shall we live? So God lays it down in chapter 6 and 7 and 8 of a how to live our sanctification. So you have been declared a saint. Remember when he starts off writing in the book of Romans in chapter one, this is addressed to the saints in the Lord, the saints. You became a saint the very moment you trusted Christ as your savior. As a saint, God says, that is your position.
You have been made, Hagiazo, the Greek word, may pure and holy and set apart. Now that’s your position. Now down here, God wants you to live according to your new position that you have in Christ. So He wants you and I to begin to cut off things out of our life that’s not Christian, that doesn’t honor the Lord. You know that’s of the flesh. He says, take off this old man, put on the new man. In other words, start living in a way that honors the Lord.
Set your affections onibraries that are above. Start living for eternal things. In other words, when he talks about fruit that shall remain. Every Christian is to have fruit that shall remain. That shall remain is the people that you end the crisis. They shall remain. They are forever. Fruit under everlasting life. So as you go through the book of Romans in chapter six, you’ll find out that you have been raised from the dead to walk in the newness of life.
Chapter 7 tells you all the conflicts you’re going to have trying to do just that. And there’s a lot of problems you’re going to have because as he says in chapter 7, look there in verse 18, for I know that is in my flesh, dwelleth no good thing, for to will is present with me, but how to perform that which is good I find now. How do I perform and lived a sanctified life when I still got this old flesh nature living inside of me.
So God says, I want you to understand. Not only did I give you eternal life, I gave you the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit indwells you from the day you trusted Christ as your Savior. You see the power in chapter 6 over sin and death and this old man, the grave is all I’ve been taken care of. You’ve been set free from that. God’s given you eternal life, a new birth, and you’re not under the law. You’re free from the law sin and death.
You’re free, but you’re not yet free from that old sin from nature that dwells within you. So now it’s the power of the Holy Spirit that wants to give you the power that you need to come and walk with the Lord, that you may follow Him, and He wants to lead you. So you look there in the book of Romans in chapter eight. You’ll notice he says they’re in verse four. That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, but not by us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
So God wants you and I not to walk after the flesh, not to live like a lost man. You and I are supposed to think and live like a saved man. Now, in your life, do you have the same purpose and goals that the lost man has? Do you want to accomplish the same thing that the lost man wants to accomplish? If there is no difference, then there is no difference. And things that are different are not the same.
The flesh and the spirit are not the same. So God has laid it out. We’re all condemned. We can be justified. And when you trust Christ, you’re justified. As though you’re never dead any of this. And now God said, how you’re to live, your Holy Spirit, He gives to you so that we’ll know what we’re supposed to do and not to do. God doesn’t want you to live like you’re condemned because you’re not. He wants you to live like you’ve been justified what you are and he wants you to live because you got the Holy Spirit living within you in order to live the way God wants you to.
And that’s why he’s called the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit doesn’t lead you into unholyness, ungodliness. It doesn’t lead you that direction. He’s called the Holy Spirit. So the more you serve the Lord, the holier life ought to be. And the holier you’re thinking ought to be. Now you go down through the eighth chapter and you wind up with some mighty wonderful verses. And I just want you to see this. Look there in verse 28. Many people claim this is their favorite verse in the Bible.
Well, that’s wonderful. In this verse, I don’t believe it’s just limited to the things that happened to me in my life, which you can. All All things work together for good to them that love the Lord, to those recalled according to His purpose. Good verse. So that means that everything that happens in my life is supposed to be good. And no, it doesn’t mean it’s good. It can work together with other things in my life to help me to grow and to sanctify my life.
In other words, things to cut off out of my life and things to put into my life. So he says to the Christian, put off the old man, put on the new man. In other words, live like a new man. Live like the child of God, you are. So he says here, and we know that all things work together for good to them, that love God to them, apache the call to court into his prayer. These words, all things.
In verse 31 says, what shall we say to these things? So there’s a possibility that these, all these things that work together for our good are the things that God has mentioned here. And when you go to the book of 2 Corinthians 5 when it says, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creation. Old things pass away, all things become new. That means the old man and the new man. There’s new things that God has for the believer in these new things.
So when he says here in verse 28, all things work together, could reference and you can see it and understand the foreknowledge of God is a good thing. And the predestination is a good thing. The election is a good thing. All these things that we didn’t understand before, God is now going to break them down and explain them to us. That’s why you have chapter 9, chapter 10, chapter 11, talking about the foreknowledge of God, what God knew beforehand and how God chooses and how God predetermined all these things are explained and they’re good for us to know and understand.
But understand in this, he says down in verse 35, who shall separate us to let you know that you can never be separated from the love of God and the love of God, God’s in his love, God’s in Christ. You can never be separated from Christ. You’ll always be with him. He said, I’ll never leave you and never forsake you.” True? So that means once you, his child, you’re always his child. And regardless of what happens in this life, nothing can ever separate you from God.
There’s no condemnation to those that are in Christ. So you can never be condemned again. Because you see, you’re dead to the law. The law cannot condemn a dead man. So the law has no power over a dead man. You were crucified. You are a dead man. That’s why you can never be condemned in the future. See, once you’re his child, you’re his child forever. Now God wants us to serve him, but if we don’t, God may have to chasten us.
But look what he says here in verse 29. He says, for whom he did for no. This could be maybe the things that he’s talking about, but he says for whom he did for no, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his son that he might be the first born among many brethren. Moreover, home he did predestinate them. He also called and whom he called them. He also justified and whom he justified them. He also glorified.
What shall we say then to these things if God be forced? Who can be against us? He that spared not his own son, but delivered him up. For us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? Now, God has done many wonderful things for us in laying out the plan of salvation. And so God has foreknowledge. He knows what’s going to happen before it takes place. That doesn’t determine what happens. That just means he knows what will happen.
God may know that tomorrow you’re going to have a car wreck. But that didn’t mean God made it happen. He may know what’s going to happen and not determine it. Predestination is determining what’s going to take place. Predestination is always about the security of the believer. What God predetermined, all those who believe will have eternal life. They will become his child. They’ll be presented without spot or blemish, holy, under the Lord. That cannot change. These things are good. And when you know them and you love the Lord and you understand this, all these things work together to build you stronger in the Lord because God has a plan for you and what he wants you to do.
So when you get to chapter nine, chapter nine kind of shows us the compassion of the Apostle Paul. And chapter 10 talks about Paul’s confession about let a man hear the gospel because somebody with a mouth confesses the gospel, and that’s important. And in chapter 11, he talks about the choice. So we have the compassion for souls, and we have the confession to tell, and we have a choice of the message that we deliver. Now, chapter nine talks a lot about the desire that Paul had.
Paul says some things that are pretty hard for me to understand. when he says in verse two of chapter nine, that I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart. For I could wish that myself were a curse from Christ for my brother and my kidsmen according to the flesh. He wanted his people to believe on Christ so bad that if it were possible, he’d be willing to be separated from God. He had just said it’s impossible to be separated from the love of Christ.
Now he’s saying to be separated because he knows it’s impossible. But he cared about people so much he had this compassion, this burning in him. And even in chapter 10 when he starts up, brother, my heart is ironed prayer to God for Israel is that they might be saved. For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. For they’ve been ignorant of God’s salvation. God’s righteousness are going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of Christ.
But Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believes. So it lays out his burden that he has and his compassion that he wanted to reach people.
