We are in Lecture 11, Lecture 11 in the book of Galatians. So I want you to take your Bible and turn to, guess what, the book of Galatians. Book of Galatians and chapter 2, Galatians and chapter 2. It’s on page 1242 in an old Schofield reference Bible and looked there in chapter 2 and will read from verse 1 to verse 5. Then 14 years after I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas and took Titus with me also. And I went up by revelation and communicated unto them that gospel which I preached among the Gentiles, but privately to them which were of reputation, blessed by any means I should run or had run in vain.
But neither Titus who was with me been a Greek was compelled to be circumcised. And that because of false brethren, unaware brought in who came in privately to spy out our liberty, which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage. To whom we gave place by subjection, no not for an hour, that the truth of the gospel might continue with you. Very strong words cover a lot of important issues, though it may not seem like it on the surface, but it does.
Because it takes us all the way back to the church there in Jerusalem, takes us back to a council meeting that they had. And it was all because of legalistic Judaizers who were seeking to place God’s people under the law. And sometimes you’ll see the word false brethren. They’re false brethren because they have a false message. Don’t worry about whether or not or they say to the law. Don’t worry about whether they’re saved or lost. I don’t know. You don’t know.
But they’re false because they’re teaching a false message. Can brethren teach a false message? Yes. So say people and lost people can both preach a false message. So you weigh the message of what they’re preaching against what the word of God has to say, and that is so very important. Now what I want you to do is look there in your notes because I place three things in this whole chapter, the book of Galatians in chapter two. And you’ll notice that the first point that I have here is that the power of the gospel might continue.
Because see if you do not defend the gospel and people add to it and nothing is said or done, then that which was added will stay with it. And then somebody else will hear that what they did and they add some more to it. It’s just like whenever you’re going to cook, now you can just boil grits. But grits need to have something added to it. Now you might want to add some salt to it and make it taste a little bit better.
I like cheese grits myself. And yesterday we had cheese grits and you added some cheese to it. Well, some people think they can improve on the gospel. You know, it’s just too plain. It’s just, it’s free. Well, that’s not very exciting. So let’s add a little work to it. Oh, that, that, that worked really good. We could add a little turn from your sin in there. And somebody will come along and they want to add some more to it.
Well, let’s just tell them they got to make Christ the Lord and Master of their life. Well, let’s just add a little bit more. Let’s say you got a, you know, as Jesus said in the heart, and add and add and next thing you know what was the gospel and you’ve lost it because you did not defend the gospel. With the gospel you don’t add to it. You can’t have anybody adding anything else to the gospel. And so… Anyway, if you look there in your notes in verse 5 of chapter 2 and Galatians, where it says, Do home we gave place by subjection?
No, not for an hour. That the truth of the gospel might continue with you. So you know, we’re going to be talking about the truth of the gospel in this second chapter. Now also you notice in your notes there that the purpose of the law might kill you, not save you. The purpose of the law was not to give life. The purpose of the law was to kill you. The wages of sin is what? Death. And if you don’t keep the law, are you in trouble?
You’re in the heap of trouble. Now look what he says there in Galatians in chapter 3. Now look down here in verse 10. In verse 10 he says, for as many as are of the works of the law are under the blessing or cursing, under the curse, because he makes the statement. If a curse it is everyone that continue if not in all things which are written in the the book of the law to do them. So if you have to keep the law, you have to keep everything that’s in the law.
All right, when does a person in this life, born into this world, when do you know all the law that in order to keep it? At this stage of your life, do you know them now? Do you know what all the law is? Does that mean just the moral law, the civil law, the sacrificial laws? What law? All of the law? What if you had to memorize the first five books the Bible, the law, the Pentateuch, the Torah. How you doing?
You got all that memorized? What if you kept all of it but missed just in one little point? Isn’t there a verse somewhere in the Bible that whosoever shall keep the whole law and offend in one point? He’s guilty of what? What? Same penalty. If you’re hanging over that cliff with those 10 links in a chain, doesn’t matter which one of those links break. Oh, you’re still mashed potatoes. It doesn’t which law. Well, I didn’t break this one, this one, this one, what about this one?
Yeah, that one there. You still fall. And so we’ve all sinned. And so the purpose of the law that might kill you. Now, I want you to see this. Look there in verse 19. In verse 19, for I through the law am what? Dead to the law, because the law kills. It is the spirit that gives life, but the law killeth. That’s also mentioned 2 Corinthians in chapter 3. Well the law kills. And so why would they want to put you under the law?
It kills. It doesn’t give life. It doesn’t edify. It doesn’t build you up, make you stronger. And so that is going to be covered. See now look there in same chapter, but look in verse 2 concerning the law and he says here, knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law by Father, faith of Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ and we might be justified by the faith of Christ and not by the works of the law, for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
Nobody can be justified by keeping the law. So because of that, if a man is still seeking to be saved, then what he’s saying is he’s not yet saved. Because if you’re seeking to be saved, that means you’re not saved. Well isn’t that what it says? They’re looking for 17. For if while we seek to be justified by Christ, you’re still seeking it, then that means you haven’t got it yet. But you and I are supposed to attend. We have already been justified.
And then you look down there at the last point in your notes that your position on the cross was in Christ. See, these are important points to be brought out in this chapter to help us understand what Paul is talking about. But see, when you’ve led people to the Lord, and over the years, I have led thousands and thousands and thousands of people to Christ. And I know that. I know that. And it breaks my heart when I see them fall into all kinds of wrong doctrine.
Now, it’s one thing for Christians to have to fight against that old lust of the flesh. You got to know lust of the flesh. You got one. You still got no sinful nature. That doesn’t mean God you have a lot of problems. But everybody has that problem. we understand that. And there’s also there’s the devil that’s in the world and you’ve got to watch every him too, right? Because he’s trying to seek and devour whoever he can. He’s a roaring lion.
So you’ve got to warn God’s children, look, you’ve got to watch out for a lion. What lion? I don’t seem to a lion. And he’s sneaky and he’s always working on a way to trap you. And then that’s one thing. But then when you have so-called brethren who try to destroy you with false doctrine. You see, that’s always worse than the loss of the flesh. I can understand the loss of the flesh, but if you’ve got the opportunity to study the truth, the proof of the God’s word, and then here’s people who claim to love the Lord and know the Lord and walk in by grace and just trust, and then they’re trying to secretly, as they did here, they come in privately.
And people are unaware. And you don’t know that they’re there. You don’t know they got teaching this contour to yours, and they secretly just kind of put out a little bit here and a little bit there. And nobody knows. And it’s poison. Remember, with rat poison, it’s 99% cornmeal. Just 1% arsenic. But it’s that little 1% that does that rat end on it. And a little 11, 11 at the whole lump. It can destroy a whole person just by a little poison.
and they can also get into a church and destroy a whole church. And there’s people, believe it or not, they’ll be used by the devil, but sometimes they’re not even aware that they’re being used at. This is why we’re just so believed the same way. Don’t believe the same way. What don’t you believe the same way? If what we believe is the right way, and somebody doesn’t believe the same way, then is that something that can be a little poison, it can come in?
Next thing you know, well, we don’t agree on everything. Well, nobody agrees on everything, but we ought to agree with what God’s Word has to say, being on the same mind, beyond the same page. That’s why we have a doctrinal statement, isn’t it? For our church, so we can protect ourselves. So they get another guy coming in here and he’s going to be the pastor. You have a way of, well, this is what we believe. Is this what you believe?
And it’s better not to show him your doctrinal statement. He said, this is what we believe. You agree? No. Ask him questions. Don’t tell him what you believe. So you can find out where he stands. then you crucify him if he’s not the right one. But the Bible says in the book of Romans in chapter 16, it says, mark them which cause divisions and teach doctrines contrary to the doctrines which you have learned and avoid them. Not join them, avoid them.
Colossians is a hard book because he tells you straight and doesn’t pull any punches. And so this last one here that your position on the cross was in Christ. Now look there in verse 20. This is also in this second chapter. Because see, if you know the truth of the gospel, it doesn’t have to worry or trouble you. Remember they were being troubled by teaching the false doctrine that you’ve got to live by the law to stay saved and to be spiritual.
And he says, no. And there will be some that will trouble you, worry you, bother you. It causes questions and doubts. Any time you add works to the gospel, you cause people problems. If it’s free, it’s free. But you have to do something. Well, not what? Not done, you can do a whole can of worms. And so when you know the truth of the gospel, it’s very wonderful and reassuring. You know you’re saved because it was a gift, it’s free, Christ paid for all my sins.
I don’t have to worry about it. I don’t worry about it. I don’t have any doubts about my salvation. I don’t go through that. I have absolutely no fear of where am I going to go into that? Because I know I’m going to heaven. Why? Because I know what he said. I know the truth of the gospel, but also know the purpose of the law. That’s why I don’t have to get under the works of the law because I know the purpose of the law.
The law was to kill me. Well, I died. Well, how do you know? We’ll see you there in verse 20. I am crucified with who? Well, that’s when I died. See, what there in verse 19, dead to the law. Well, how did you get dead to the law? Well, I must have died. Well, see, the law cannot condemn a dead man. Once you’re dead, do you still have to pay taxes? Well, your relatives might. But you know what they don’t try to make, go to the graveyard and try to get all those people to come out of there and do something for you.
See, if it’ll work. I had this one man tell me, he says, he says, I’ve got 500 people under me. I says, really? I said, where do you work? He says, cemetery. Okay. I am crucified. Now some of y’all won’t get that. That’s probably over your head. Emilio didn’t get that. I gotta say it in Spanish, really. In verse 20, I am crucified with Christ. Nevertheless, I live. In other words, I really didn’t die. But in God’s eyes, I died.
Because Christ died in my place. So in God’s eyes, I died, paid for my sin. So I don’t have to be under the law because I paid my debt to the law. I’m free from the law. I’m free. That’s why he says, do not become entangled again with the yoke of bondage. Because you’ve been set free from it. Don’t let somebody’s how to put you back underneath the law. And I gotta keep the law to go to heaven now.
Okay, which one? Well, it says, you know, love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, mind, body, soul, and strength. How you doing? You love him with all your heart? I mean, nothing’s left. That means no empty place in there. It’s 100%. Not 99.9. It’s got to be 100%. Do you? Love your neighbor. As yourself, do you really? Do you really? And yet everything can be fulfilled in love, but we don’t love the way we should. We still have an old sinful nature and we’re still greedy, we’re still envious.
You’re still getting mad at something that I say. I bet you I could say something the night to make you mad. Not like going to. I never would do anything like that purposely. But I could probably still say something to hurt your feelings. True? You probably could say something to do with something to make me mad. Probably. No. No. No. No, I’m above all of that. I don’t have any feelings. Now, if I was to take, you know, Emilio, because Emilio, he tries to save you and so in God, and what he’s done.
So here’s Emilio, he’s laying up here. He’s a dead man. I can walk up during the kick of mine. He won’t kick me back. Why won’t he kick me back? Because he’s dead. I could spit on him. He won’t spit on me back. Why? Because he’s dead. See if he’s dead, he’s dead. We’re to be alive unto God. Don’t try that with me. And I won’t try that with you because I know you still got an old sin for nature and I’m supposed to live and reckon as though it’s true in God’s eyes, it is true.
But we’re still living and we’re still living in a physical body. And God tells us now you were saved by believing the gospel and you had a spiritual birth and so the Holy Spirit gave you Holy Spirit gave you a spiritual life. And so now you’re supposed to live according to the Holy Spirit that lives within you and teaching you the word of God. And everything works wonderful. So he says in chapter three, I want you to look in chapter three and verse one.
So he’s talking to Christians and they have been bewitched. Who hath bewitched you? Who charmed you? Oh, foolish Galatians. Does that sound like he’s trying to win friends and influence people? He must never read Del Carnegie’s book on how to win friends I’ve been promised. Well, anyway, oh foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you that you should not obey the truth? Before whose eyes Jesus Christ has been evidently said, for crucified a million, he’s I came to. I’m the one that led you to the Lord.
It wasn’t through Judaizers, they didn’t lead you to Christ. He said, I did that, I came to you. I preached the gospel, you heard it, you believed it. So in verse two, this is only what I learn of you. Receive you the spirit. How did you receive the Holy Spirit by the works of the law or by the hearing of faith? You heard and you believed and you were indrocned by the Holy Spirit. So you received the Holy Spirit.
It’s because you kept the law. Well, if you have to keep the law to get the Holy Spirit at what point in your life do you say, okay, I can have them now because I’ve kept the law. Or would you have to wait until you end up your life to get the Holy Spirit? You see, if you became a test of you got to perform before you get the Holy Spirit, well, you can’t get the Holy Spirit until you die.
Well, you don’t need it then. It’s too late. But if you can get the Holy Spirit ahead of time, all you gotta do is buy believing. So then he asked this question, are you so foolish? He said, having begun in the spirit, are you now made perfect by the flesh? Look up here. Flesh, birth, spirit, birth. Did you get this birth because of the works of the flesh? No. By the hearing of faith. You heard the gospel, you trusted Christ the Savior, and so you got the new birth by hearing the gospel.
Not by the works of the flesh. Now, are you gonna perfect this one by making him listen to the flesh? You gonna stick this new little baby underneath the flesh? I used to tell people, look, you don’t put live chickens under a dead end. Now think about it for a minute. Would you put live chickens under a dead end? And you don’t put live chickens in dead churches. So you wanna try to get as many people as you can to trust the Lord, but you wanna give them to a place where you can nurture them and bring them along.
And that’s been lost today. But anyway, that’s where moving right along here. He says, you have this truth that’s been, you did obey the truth. What did hinder you? Now see there in chapter five and chapter five, look what he says there in verse seven, chapter five verse seven. He says, you did run well. So he’s talking to those who did run and they were running pretty good. In other words, you were serving the Lord, you were doing fine.
And then he says this, who did hinder you that you should not obey the truth? Cause false teachers keep you from obeying truth. They get you to obey air. To believe something that’s not true. And it robs you of your peace and your joy and your happiness. And that all these things are what is ruined. A lot of Christians, a lot of believers. Now, I want you to take your Bible and look there in Galatians in chapter two, look in verse one.
Then 14 years after I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas and took Titus with me also. Now he had been up there, as you know, a little bit before that, and had gone up there and spent about 15 days with Peter, James, and John, and then it had been gone. But he had already been in the backside of a desert, I guess, in Arabia for three years. And that’s where the Lord told him everything that he wanted him to teach.
And God revealed things to him, taught him things. And so he didn’t learn it from the other apostles. And he had about four times that he had gone up to Jerusalem. But, And they didn’t want to have too much to do with Paul because well they heard what kind of a man he was. So Barnabas comes along and he goes down and deterses and gets to hold a Paul and brings him up and kind of introduces him around a little bit.
And he is one who comes along and says, but it was his idea first. And so God always likes to, you know, when you need some help, it’s amazing how sometimes just one little friend will come along side of you. most people have got at least one friend. You got five, you’re rich, but if you got one good friend, they come to alongside. Nothing wrong with that, longs are a good friend. But now, this Titus was an issue. And so he says in verse two, and I went up by revelation, that means it was his idea because of God’s vision to him.
And he talks about the revelation that he’d already got in verse 12 of chapter one, how he got the gospel. Now to go and do what he was going to do now, he went by special revelation. And then issue would come up about whether or not, do you have to be circumcised? Do you have to keep the law? Well, he had a guy with him named Titus. Titus was a great. So did Titus, well, he hadn’t been circumcised. And so the apostle Paul, because this issue came up in the church.
And so it was Paul’s idea to go up to the council in Jerusalem and talk to all these head guys, you know, the big shots, you know, the other apostles. And he says, I don’t wanna run or have run in vain. He says, I’m taking Titus with me. He says, and when I went, he says, none of the other apostles demanded that Titus be circumcised because he didn’t have to be. They was teaching that and they said, somebody comes from Jerusalem and they’re teaching that.
So he goes up there and he didn’t want to waste his time. He said, look, I got tied with me because I’m not playing games, I’m not wasting my time. He says, do you do band him? It wasn’t that they were gonna come up there and see if Paul was right, Paul was gonna appear to see if they were right because they said they came from the church in Jerusalem. So he didn’t want to waste his time running away.
So he goes and talks to them point blank, straight on. Now, and you’ll notice that in verse three, but neither Titus who was with me, Ben and Greek was compelled to be circumcised. And that because of false brethren, Unawares brought in. So somebody had brought some of these false teachers into the church in Jerusalem, and they were leaving and going out and telling things that were not true. And the apostles, evidently maybe not have known about this. So what Paul does in Acts chapter 15 is we gotta have a meeting.
So they decide to have a meeting. But when he gets to Titus, the Titus, did he have his message right? I wonder if he did. Take your Bible and turn to the book of Titus. To the book of Titus. You got the Thessalonians and the Timothy’s and then you got Titus. All the teasers are together like that. But look in the book of Titus. And you’ll notice in chapter one of the book of Titus, this is on page 1283, Paul had sent him there because he was going to set in order.
Now, Timothy talks about the sound doctrine of the church, but Titus comes along and gives the order of the church. And so he says here in verse, let’s look in verse five here, says, for this cause, Paul said, is I left the increase that thou should have said in order the things that are wanting that are lacking and ordained elders in every city as I appointed thee. And if any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children, not accused of riot or unruly.
For a bishop or elder pastor must be blameless as the steward of God, not self-will, not soon angry, or given to wine or strike or given to filthy luke, but a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men sober, just holy temper. In other words, most people can’t meet the qualification. That’s why we have so many people that never trained themselves to be a pastor, an evangelist, a missionary, because you talk about going to boot camp. This is rough stuff.
And you got to be able to meet this. And it’s not just for anybody, it’s for somebody who wants to pay the price. Some people cannot pay the price. But anyway, look up here. Isn’t it wonderful to have these notes, and then I can teach on anything I want? Sometimes I go by them. Sometimes it doesn’t really matter, but they’re good for you to study. Look up here. This hand represents you and me and the wallet represents sin. We all have sin on us.
Everybody. is a sinner. We all are sinners. But God says that He loves sinners. He came to save sinners. If there’s so-called righteous people that say, well, I don’t have any sin. Well, God can’t save them because Christ only came to save sinners. Did He come to save the good people? He came to save the bad people and there’s only bad people. And the wages of sin is death. That means eternal separation from God and hell. But God loves us once that He goes to heaven.
They go to heaven, we have to be perfect as righteous as God. And none of us are perfect. None of us are righteous. We have all sinned and we cannot save ourselves. We need a Savior. This hand represents Jesus Christ. He’s the Lord God in the flesh. He came into the world because he loves us, hates our sin because our sin separates us from him. So Jesus Christ who had no sinned in half the die. So he took all the sin of all the world, paid for it on the cross, came back from the dead.
And said the only thing we have to do is believe he did that for. So when I believed it 58 years ago, his death was put to my account. And as far as God is concerned, I was crucified with Christ. And I was buried with Christ. And I come back from the dead. So I am free from the law because the law has killed me. And my position is in Christ and in Christ I am forgiven. In Christ I am righteous.
In Christ I am perfect. In Christ I’m ready to go. That’s the best news all the world. Let’s pray shall we? With his bow and eyes closed no one looking around. If you’re watching by internet tonight I want to know that God loves you and he loves you very much and he proved his love by making a payment for your sins just like he did for us and and anybody in the world. And the only thing he wanted us to do is believe he did it for us.
I believe it, therefore he gave me eternal life. If you’ll believe it, he’ll give you eternal life. And if it’s eternal life, it’ll last forever. If it’s eternal life and lasts forever, where would you go when you die? Cause all your sins are paid. That was the best news I ever heard my whole life. And I hope that your trust Christ is your savior. If you’re in the auditorium and you’ve never trust the Lord, in the quietness of this moment, would you just talk to the Lord and say, Lord, I’m no one in the center.
And I believe Christ died, paid for my sins. then I’m going to trust him right now as my Savior. If you’ll trust him, God said he would save you. If you’re no Christ of Savior, you’re God’s child, you know you’re going to have him in your eye. Serve the Lord. But take a strong stand for the defense of the gospel. Defend that message because you’re defending what Christ did on the cross. It’s the difference of heaven and hell. That’s how serious it is.
