Now you’ll notice in verse 4 of chapter 9 and it gets into the the reasons of what God had promised. And remember, we hinge an awful lot upon the promises of God. Does God lie? If God lies in any place, you don’t know if He’s going to lie in another. So there is no verse, no scripture that says God told a lie. God doesn’t lie. So what He says is the truth. So then, didn’t He make in the Old Testament a lot of promises to Israel.
See there were covenants that he had made. You call it one of the Abrahamic covenant, the Davidic covenant, where he promises the land and then he promises the king and there’s a mother-little covenants in there but those are two main covenants that God made. Now some covenants are conditional, some are unconditional. If it’s a conditional it means it’s based upon whether or not you follow through and do certain things. Unconditional has nothing to do with your choice, actions, or anything else.
It depends upon what God says. So this is why you can study those things and some of the things can blow your mind a little bit, but there’s promises that God made and he will keep because there are unconditional promises God made. One of the promises that he made was to Abraham in chapter 15 and verse 6 when he made the statement that he would justify the heathen through faith and that by believing Abraham was justified by faith alone.
And he was justified by faith without the law, because the law was not given for 430 years. So there’s no way that Abraham could have kept the law. But by faith, so God says in the book of Galatians in chapter 3 and verse 6, it repeats that verse. verse. But in verse 8, he says, for the Scripture foreseen that God would justify the heathen through faith preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed, that God would justify the heathen by faith alone.
Well, that’s a promise that God made. But the promise could not be fulfilled unless Christ came and died for the sins of the world because God cannot just overlook man’s sin, he cannot just forgive people, the payment has to be made to satisfy the righteous demands of the law which required death. So Christ had to come in order for God the Father to fulfill His promise. So we had these promises but He made promises to Israel also and promises to Israel that the Messiah would come.
Well did He come? He came just like He promised. And they accepted Him right just like they were supposed to. No, they didn’t. So the king was rejected, the kingdom was postponed. But now if that’s true, how come Israel can still be His chosen people when they rejected Him? Because He said this, that the seed is counted for the promise. You see, down through the years there’s always been a remnant of those who truly believed in the Lord. Old test would say they trusted Jehovah.
In the New Testament do we have Jews, individuals that trusted the Lord. So they trusted the Lord individually. But as a nation, the scribes, the Pharisees, the chief rulers and so on, they rejected Him. So the Lord says, it’s not those who are Israel Our county for the promise. It’s the believing individuals. God promised and he keeps his word. And so even though today Israel has been scattered upon the face of the year, there is still a remnant of believing Jews and there’s always been.
So God is keeping his word. The children of Israel, there is still the seed and one day it’s all pay off, but in the meantime God has Grafted in a while branch which is the Gentiles and so one day Because of unbelief God takes us out of here God’s gonna take his children and And he’s going to graft him back in again to the branch, to the root. And Israel will be as born in a day. So God will keep his word, the promises that he made.
It says somewhere in the Bible the gifts and calling of God are without repentance. Look here in chapter 11 to real quick. what it says there in verse 28. As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sake, but as touching the election, they are beloved for the Father’s sake.qqa the gifts and calling of God are without repentance. In other words, God does not, cannot change his mind. So when God gives you the gift of eternal life, he can’t changes mine on that and take it away from you.
There’s things that God has promised down the road that He will not change His mine on. And so when you know this, it gives you that security. Like today, the world seems like it’s fallen apart. It’s in chaos, wouldn’t you say? Does the child of God have to be fallen apart just because the world falls apart? No, we know that one of these days the Lord made a promise that He’s coming back for us and He’s going to take us out of this world.
True? So believing that can bring comfort to the soul. That’s why He says in thessalonians chapter 4 verse 13 and then down to verse 18. But verse 18 talks about where for comfort with these words, these words are supposed to bring comfort. knowing what God says and what God promised can give us the peace of mind. And you have that confidence, that’s why he says in Hebrews in chapter 10 verse 35, cast not away therefore your confidence which has great recompense of reward.
Rewards because of service. So we’re talking not about us going to heaven because that’s already taken care of. Our justification has been cleared and we’re on our way, but we’re not there yet. So we’re still living here in life, but we know that what God promised is going to be fulfilled, that we shall be presented before Him in love and without spot, without blemish, and we are going to be adopted into His family, which we believe when these old bodies are redeemed, then we have our total inheritance.
Now those things and indwelling of the Holy Spirit, the down payment upon that which is yet to come. But we believe these things because God’s word says so. Now, if you look there, down at verse 6, verse 6, not as though the word of God have taken none effect, for they are not all Israel, which are of Israel. In other words, not everybody in the nation because they’re all chosen. No. Chosen has to be referenced to the remnant of believers.
Now, get what he says. Neither because they are the seed of Abraham. Seed of Abraham? Flesh. Are they all children? But in Isaac’s spirit shall thy seed be called. See, there’s two births. Whether they’re Jew or Gentile, we all have a flesh birth. that is not the And you and I, we talk about the church. The church is not made up of everybody from Pentecost to the Rapture. It’s only made up of those who will move. That’s the second birth.
Now when he makes that statement in verse six, taken of none effect, look there in Romans in chapter three and verse three. Lookin’ Romans three and verse three. Well, let’s just look in verse one because just showing you how that God had made some statements about the nation of Israel. When he makes the statement, he says, What advantage does the Jew have over the Gentiles? Well, they had the Word of God. He says, oh, what prophets? They’re in circumcision.
They had knowledge, but they didn’t. Believe it. See, there are verses two much every way, chiefly because that unto them were committed the oracles of God. But look at the next verse. For what if some did not what? They did not believe. Shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect? That’s the same thing that’s mentioned over here in chapter 9. Does they annul the Word of God? can’t save and won’t save. No God will save those who believe and those that don’t believe they’re not part of the seed and that’s not who the promises are for.
So God has a remnant of believers. You remember a guy that was well he had a big old showdown with Ahab the Ahab the Sheikah the burning sand. No it wasn’t him, but he had a problem in 450 of the prophets of Baal, great victory. And then there was a woman named Jezebel says, I’m going to do you in. And what did he do? Ran for his life, poor me. Lord, I’m the only one left. All of Israel, I’m the only one left.
Well, was he right or wrong? No, the Lord says, I’ve got 7,000. Never bother me to bail. You just don’t know everybody. And so it doesn’t matter how many unbelieving Jews there are, there’s always a remnant. And we have people that will trust Christ as their Savior among the Jewish people even. But Paul wanted his people. He wanted the whole nation. He wanted all of them. He says, I bear them, Rick, they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.
For they’ve been ignorant of the righteousness of God, have gone about to establish their own righteousness and have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of Christ. For the law is the end of righteousness to everyone that believeth. So because they did not believe they were not part of the fulfillment of the promise. They could have believed they could have been a remnant, but does that mean just because, well, Now nobody believed, and it’s all over, no there’s always been a remnant down to the years.
God keeps His word. And the reason I believe that’s important is like this. You look at the nation of Israel as though the nation of Israel was a person. Israel was born, and Israel was born as a nation like when it comes out of Egypt, and it’s like this man was born. And later on, God gave this man a name. His name was called Jacob and later changed to Israel. And so you have all these various tribes and so forth, but Israel is looked upon and treated as though that is a person.
And so this person on down the road, you know, if they’re obedient, God blessed, they’re disobedient, God chases. And that’s what he does to us. And even though God has chasteened, sometimes that nation has gone astray, but there’s always been a remnant because they are the security that God will never cast them out and never lose them. They will always be. If you could kill all the people and all the ones that not didn’t believe, then the seed would have been broken.
There’s always going to be a believing remnant that’s what God’s talking about. And that is just like you and I, we trust Christ, they’re saving. Now we are a child of God. And you may have good days, you may have bad days. You’ll be obedient, you’ll be disobedient. But once you’re his child, you’re always his child. Now look what he says here. And remember to mention this the other day. That as you go through and you study in the book of Romans in first chapter, through halfway through the third chapter verse 20, you have God working.
And that’s why he says that God created and all these things and about God, God, God. But then it says, but God in chapter three, his righteousness is manifested. The son of God comes. Now you’re talking about Jesus Christ in chapter three, four, and five, the last part of chapter. And so you’ve got about Christ. Now you have Christ, the justification. men are condemned, the first three chapters, and then halfway through. All people can be justified. And then you have in chapter 6, 7, and 8, you talk about the sanctification.
Now you’ll notice in chapter 8 in these verses… When he talks about, you know, foreign knowledge, predestination, you don’t find the word sanctification in there. Because sanctification has to do with now. And your sanctification and your Christian life and how you live depends on you. These other things depends on God. See, when you trust Christ as your Savior, you are automatically that point. You’re born into God’s family, you have eternal life, you’re justified, and one day you’re going to be glorified.
But your sanctification here in this present time depends upon you, the other depends upon God. Your security depends upon the Lord. And because of understanding this may help you to see why in chapter 12, I beseech you, therefore, brethren, in view of what God’s done for you, your reasonable services do yield your bodies a live and sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God. Holy, the Greek word hagiyahuob, you need to be made pure and holy down. The day you trust the Lord, you have become pure and holy in your new birth.
But this you have in the first chapter when it says saints which be in Rome, you are a saint. But your sanctification is a process of how you live in your life. And you grow in your sanctification because of who you are, live like it. So therefore, that’s why those things I believe are in here and very simple, very clear. Now go back to verse 6 of Romans chapter 9, chapter 9 verse 6. Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect, for they are not all Israel which are of Israel, neither because they are the seed of Abraham or they all children, but in Isaac shall thy seed be called.
Then you have a verse that I use all the time when I do the two natures. That is, they which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God. So whether it’s Jews or Gentile, children of the flesh are not the children of God. Our first birth is not a child of God. Only when you trust Christ as your Savior, then you become a child of God, but it’s your second birth. And the only reason you became a child of God is because by faith you chose to accept Christ as your Savior.
So since God has decided before the foundations of the world, how is God going to save somebody? What method is He going to use? This is why you find there in verse 11 for the children being not yet born, having neither done any good or evil that the purpose and And this purpose goes all the way back over there to verse 28 in chapter 8, according to the purpose, it’s a purpose. God calls according to His purpose. And the purpose is that no flesh or glory in His presence.
So God says, you’re not saved by your works. Look what He says, that the purpose of God, according to election, this is talking about how a man is chosen. How did God choose to say a person. Yet the last part might stand not of what? Not of works. Salvation is not of works, but that’s why in chapter 10 he says they have a zeal of God but not according to knowledge. They’ve been ignorant of the righteousness they could have by simply trusting the Lord.
So they go about to establish their own righteousness by their works. This is explained very good in the chapter 11 about, you know, why were they set aside? Why did they stumble? Because they were seeking God’s seeking righteousness by the law and not by faith, which the Gentiles did. But anyway, we’ll get to that a little bit later. Now look what he says here, but of him that call of God in the gospel is good news. God chose to save by grace.
Here you’re talking about where He says, it’s not of works. So if there’s a question, you ought to know. God did not choose to save any Jew or any Gentile by their works. Now look here in chapter 11, and notice what he says here in verse five. Even so then, talking about, you know, in verse four there, where you’re talking about the prophets, said all of this, and he has not, Well, there’s only one and the last one, last of the Mohicans.
No, there’s 7,000 that have about the need. And verse 5, even so then at this present time, also there is a remnant according to the election of grace or works. Grace. And if by grace, then it is no more of works, otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then it is no more grace, otherwise work is no more work. It’s got to be grace or works. So God says in chapter 9, not of works.
Here He says, it is by grace. So God isn’t stuttering. He says what He means and means what He says. So just because a person is born in the nation of Israel, they’re God’s chosen so they get to go to heaven. Not if they don’t trust Christ as their Savior. If they don’t trust the Lord, they’re not God’s child, they’re not part of the children. It’s that God made a promise to that remnant, those believers, those that trust Christ as Savior.
He says, these are the ones that accounted for the seed. Hold your place right here, and let’s just look at the cover. These verses, look over there in the book of Galatians real quick. The book of Galatians, book of Galatians in chapter three. when he talks about the promise, look what he says. In verse 13, he says, Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us. For it is written, cursed is everyone that hangeth on a tree.
This is Christ, down on the cross, being cursed in our place. Verse 14, why that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ? He’s already told that to Abraham in the Old Testament. So the Jews were to know this. And so he’s talking about God’s righteousness been given. Then he makes a statement here in the last part of verse 14 that we might receive the promise of the spirit through faith, not law, not by works.
And then he makes a statement in verse 16. Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not and do seeds as of many, but as of one and to thy seed, which is Christ. God made a promise to Abraham that through his seed, which was Christ, that he would bless the earth. And that blessing is upon those who will accept God’s blessing. And those who will not accept Christ are under a curse. They still have the wrath of God abides upon them.
So as a child of God, look what he says in verse 24. Wherefore the law was our school master to bring us to Christ. Like the school bus can take the kids to school, but the school bus doesn’t teach the kids. It just takes them there. It just reveals that the law can’t save you. The bus doesn’t teach you, but it takes you to Christ. So the law condemns every man. Then he says here in verse, last part of verse 24, that we might be just by faith.
But after that faith has come, we are no longer, we don’t need to school bus anymore. In verse 26, for we are all, all the children of God and stop right there, right? By faith in Christ Jesus. Now look in verse 29. And if we be Christ, then are we Abraham’s seed and heirs according to the promise? So God kept his promise. And if God can keep his promise of them, but what He wanted to see is just because the nation of Israel rejected the word of God Doesn’t mean the word of God has taken no effect those who do believe on Christ still have eternal life and God has made a promise and he keeps his word So as you go through the book of Romans, you’ll find out that God means what he says says what he means Now if you want some interest in
Scripture, it’s gonna be what we cover on next week verse 14 to the end of this chapter It’s a riot. Look up here. I did have a little statement. As a Calvinist would say, we should not be surprised by God’s judgment of mankind. Every person is a sinner and deserves his wrath. We should not be surprised that God did not choose to save everybody but that God chose to save anybody. So therefore you ought to feel pretty good that at least he didn’t let everybody go to hell.
I believe that God did not pick who He wants to save. I believe God so loved the world sent His Son to pay the payment for the sins of the whole world and God has chosen all of those who accept Christ as Savior that they’ll be made perfect and they will be receiving the image of His Son and will be just like the Lord and it’s in concrete. That’s why we say, I couldn’t go to hell if I tried.
Now I haven’t tried, but I know I have eternal life based upon the promises of God. Predestination means destiny fixed beforehand. God has fixed the destiny of all those who believe on Christ. But he does not determine who believes. That is your individual choice. Look up here, the saying, represent you and me. This is the whole world. Everybody in the world has all sinned. God so loves the world, but he hates the sin of the world. God wants the whole world to go to heaven, but you can’t go because of sin.
Because of sin, we can’t get in. So the Bible says you cannot earn eternal life. Understand if, if you cannot earn your salvation, how can you unearn it? If it was a gift and he gives it to you free, but some people say you have to earn the way to heaven. Okay, and if you don’t, you got to unearn it, then you lose your salvation. That’s junk. The Bible says God loves all of us and that we can’t save ourselves, none of us can.
So Christ, what He did for one person, He had to do for everybody. Grays cannot allow God to pick and choose. He is not a respecter of persons. He cannot choose based upon a man’s works, good or bad, and He made that decision before anybody was ever born and did any good He already decided, I’m going to save by grace. And He told them what they have to do. He told all of us, we have to make the choice, the choose.
And that is that Christ died on the cross and paid for the sins of the world. And when you choose to believe that, God chooses to give you eternal life. And if He gives you eternal life, it lasts forever. And we go to heaven on what He did for us. We don’t earn eternal life. We don’t work for it. forth, we can’t ever lose it. Let’s pray, shall we? With heads bound, eyes closed and no one looking around. If you’ve never trusted Christ as your Savior, I hope that you really understand it.
Be ashamed to come to church all these years and never really trust the Lord. Or if you’re watching by the internet, right where you are, just simply in your own mind, say, I don’t understand at all. Maybe you’ve got some questions in doubt, but you understand enough. You know that you’re a sinner and God loves you. And to prove he loves you, he paid for your sins. Came back from the dead and says, the only thing he wants you to do is believe he did it for you.
Would you believe it? If you will, right on the screen, says, yes, I will trust Christ as my Savior. I pray that you will. Let us know. Just click it. Father, we thank you again for your blessings. Thank you for all you’ve done for us. Thank you for this time together. Once again, we look forward to a good weekend. Many people on the highways, traveling. We pray you’ll be good to them and bless them and help them to stay alert.
And no one’s on the week one, long ways, and others be flying, but whatever they do, wherever they go, that there’ll be the testimony that they should be. And give them open doors and pass tracks out everywhere they go, that you ought to be able to follow every person because of the trail they left by the tracks that were left behind. Thank you so much for your goodness. Christ’s name. Amen. Are you a new listener to Bibleline? Do you enjoy the teachings of Dr.
